This is an unreleased album from 1975! Dieu has smiled upon us, for a previously shelved early album (1975) by Ilitch finally has its jour in the soleil. Thierry Müller's strange musical arc is further enriched and confounded by this exploratory cosmic release. A brilliant mix of Krauty space groans and experimentalism (see also Conrad Schnitzler and Ash Ra Temple, etc) and the progressive electronics of Igor Wakhevitch. There is some psych in the folds, and the album is tripped-out all over. Full of small sounds underneath mystical and shimmering beds of loping electronic waves. It sounds like it was made three galaxies over (isn't that where France is?). 6 tracks of deep galactics (or is it a journey through another planet's Hell?). One person's Enfer is another's Ciel. "Like other 1970s European electronic rock artists from Heldon to Conrad Schnitzer, Ilitch owes more to the avant-garde experiments of Stockhausen and Xenakis than to the rock and roll of Chuck Berry or even the Beatles. Ilitch came out of France, was the work of mostly one person, Thierry Müller, using unconventional guitars as well as keyboards and other electronics to create strange textures and sounds. Müller was a photographer and graphic artist from Paris who started making recordings in the early 1970s using prepared guitars, harmonium, and even using the tape recorder as another instrument." |

Since its creation in 2006, Jüppala Kääpiö has tried to substantiate what they were hearing and feeling from animals, plants or even minerals that they met in their living places in different countries and during travels in different continents. "Animalia Corolla" is a record of feasts of spirits gathered from the whole world. Their songs, dances and conversations about the synchronicity of their dreams have been transcribed in this album. Jüppala Kääpiö is a Swiss and a Japanese duo. They settled in Brussels in Belgium in summer 2011 after staying in Switzerland, Canada, Mongolia and Japan. One of the inumerable bands to emerge from the post-Beatles Japanese tour of 1966 with Fab Four pretentions. The Mops were a Tokyo quintet led by drummer Mikiharu Suzuki who had cut his musical teeth in a Ventures-style combo in the previous spring. The line-up was augmented by the arrival of Suzukis older brother, Hiromitu, a lead vocalist with an Eric Burdon obsession who added hugely to the bands fuzzy garage soul sound. The limited 10-inch Ezo allows the versatile Hitoshi Kojo to enchant the listener with vague notions of animism and potential energy. As opposed to his fascinating Kodama project - a partnership with Michael Northam that was typified by bursting, electronic builds, repetition, and long-form structure that demanded the listener to grasp for context and meaning - Ezo, due to both its short length and its powerful, immediate initial burst, immediately immerses the listener in a largely natural, fast-paced world. It would serve as a natural contrast, in fact, to place Ezo's familiar sounds of sloshing water and scraping metal, at all points filling the sound spectrum, with the alternately full and empty electronic drones and close-listening activities that menace and stare throughout Kodomas Turning Leaf Migrations. To understand Ezo, and to get a sense for why it is an exciting record, it is important to see its place in Kojo's 2009 output. Ezo serves as a bridge between the highly successful Kodama and the unsuccessful drone/ambient project Libellula, a trio comprised of Kojo, Sebastian Clinger, and the aforementioned Northam. (2) saw Libellula become too subdued, too reliant on nuance, and because both the nuance lacked detail and the structure lacked sufficient differentiation from a standard genre piece, the result was forgettable. Kodama solved all these problems, but the results were only tangentially related to drone. Instead of relying on new streams to add color to a drone, Turning Leaf Migrations varied the density, displayed a masterful grasp of movement within the stereo spectrum, and utilized a host of different sound sources, be they electronics, found sounds (such as water, insects, and walking), or whatever was on hand. While Ezo predates the release of both of these records, it was constructed well after them. Kojo, cryptically explaining his thought process, speaks of the sound sources heard on the album, the resonances of everyday objects, and the spaces that contain those objects. Tellingly, he also makes reference to the artifact, the very record in discussion here. Each pressed record is its own object, with its own resonance, to be used and slowly degraded like anything else. Perhaps to Kojo, all physical objects have powerful potential resonances, and the environment within which they are found is the key to bringing forth such sounds. With this approach, Ezo differentiates itself from (2) in that it properly illustrates, rather than alludes to, the sound within things. Likewise, Turning Leaf Migrations is distinguished from Ezo by its exponentially greater direct manipulation of sounds. In other words, Kojo is letting things speak for themselves. That said, Kojos artistic task, as with most musicians utilizing found sounds, is to get these things to say something, to mean something. The chosen approach is normally juxtaposition and/or layering, and Ezo is no exception. The introductory sound of pouring water quickly turns from serene to tumultuous, subtly morphing into a swirling sound, ice cubes seemingly flush to the edge of a cup, pressed harder and harder as scraping metal and low-register vibrations form an abrasive focal point. High-pitched activity towards the top of the composition gives way to a multiplication of the initial water motion, just as the metallic scraping and rumbling become increasingly unhinged. Without spoiling the records moment-by-moment development, what does it mean? Ezo is an interpretation not only of Kojo's surroundings, but also of Kojo himself. After all, if the object can beget the sound, and the sound can beget a new object, isn't the architect also a layer and also an artifact? It stands to reason, then, that Kojo has his own resonance, and to unlock it, to decipher his meaning, you must place him in some context - namely, this record. Coupled with notions of impermanence; the destructive, unstoppable force of water that is ever-present on this record; and the building, manic metallic noises, Kojo could be exploring notions of his own degradation - a sense of invisible but surely present decay of his self and the emotions those realizations foster: fear, anger, aggression, helplessness. Ezo therefore represents a development for Kojo, a progression from passive, to active, to aware. In short, Ezo is the crucial link that turns three albums into a telling, personal character arc, where both the works and the artist are revealed as fragile, organic things. The tendency towards driving free-rock which surfaced on moments of the trio's last release is cemented here, with O'Rourke's fuzzed-out, non-linear bass riffing moving the music into almost garage-rock areas, combining with Ambarchi's drums to form a bedrock of hypnotic, metronomic pounding which transforms itself effortlessly into passages of flowing free-time. "Lux Ova" is a compilation of Hitoshi Kojo's recordings from the middle 90's, before he started releasing the work as Spiracle. Under Spiracle name, he has released long durational drone recordings that were often compared to the works of Organum, La Monte Young, or Iancu Dumitrescu. Through ten years, the style crystalized to more minimal and subtle direction, as it appears in Ananta (from Heren Scarsdale Agency) and the last release Evestrum (from Drone Records). This compilation already shows the direction, but also his more spontaneous side that has appeared in his later project Kodama (with Michael Northam) and Jüppala Kääpiö (with Carole Kojo Zweifel). Although Hitoshi Kojo has released several recordings by his real name, those were mostly documents of his extended works like installation and site-specific action, except Ezo (from Alluvial Recordings). However this compilation covers the unshown part of his musical influences in the early period such as 70's psychedelic music, 80's industrial music, shoegaze. The various materials: voices, flutes, strings, material noises, field recordings were all multilayered and harmonized together with foggy electromagnetic hiss of a cassette recorder. They may often sound raw and dense. However they diffuse vivid impulse of early creation which is not entangled by an emotional heaviness. Omnimoment is a collection of Hitoshi Kojo's site-specific soundworks that were originally presented as installations or live-installation/performances between 2006 and 2009. All the works were created for a particular location by using objects that were found in and around that location, mixed with environmental sound. They were presented in long durations, from two hours to ten weeks, via multi-channel speaker systems, blending with the acoustic sound and resonance of the space. For this CD, the works have all been edited and re-composed in stereo using the partial documents of the respective projects. Compiled by Ace Farren Ford and Rick Potts, "Blorp Esette" is technically a reissue, except nobody ever heard the originals and half the material is previously unreleased. Including tracks from Smegma with Wild Man Fischer, the Reverend Toad-Eater, the Doo Dooettes, Henry Kaiser, Joe Potts, the South Pasadena Free Music Ensemble and long-unavailable album art by Captain Beefheart, the collection basically lays out the parameters for what has become a burgeoning subculture of unsupervised and as yet illegitimate artistic fecundity as well as being a sound document of a specific cultural moment." In the late seventies, early eighties, the LAFMS released two volumes of "Blorp Esette". Both albums were compilations (samplers) of alternative, experimental, outsider music from and around Los Angeles-and both albums featured Don Van Vliet artwork. This sprawling and vastly extended reissue of the L.A. Free Music Society state of the union (originally issued as two separate LP's) contains a dizzying wealth of essential material for LAFMS obsessives, not least some 20+ minutes of otherwise unavailable Smegma material, along with nearly an LP's worth of work by Smegma's Ju Suk Reet Meate (whose LP from the period was just reissued on Destijl). Beyond that, I'll refrain from parsing this massive document point for point, its immense significance really speaks for itself. Apart from the assorted Van Vliet images used on the labels and covers there is also another Beefheart connection ... one of the many musicians taking part was Richard (Midnite Hatsize) Snyder, bass player and guitarist with the Magic Band. 4XCD COMES WITH 32 PAGE BOOKLET. |
