First come first serve! BUREAU B celebrates 2012s Record Store Day with a series of exclusive 12" vinyl releases. Faust are one of the main protagonists of krautrock. When their first LP was released in 1971, their collage of Dadaism, avant-garde rock and free improvisation radically divided opinion. Whilst some lauded Faust as the best thing that ever happened to rock, others dismissed them as shameless dilettantes. After several split-ups, reunions and line-up changes, Faust today comprises the founder members Jean-Herv Peron and Zappi DIermeier plus James Johnston (Gallon Drunk) and the British artist Geraldine Swayne. Their track on our exclusive 12-inch is a previously unreleased outtake from their most recent recording session. Like A Stuntman play eccentric, weird, harmonic, glitchy electro kraut pop like you have never heard before. Their first release on Bureau B ("Original Bedouin Culture", 2009) was highly acclaimed by the critics and classified as "krautrock for the post Radiohead generation" or "Germanys Animal Collective". The band had raised the bar to dizzying heights on this album - with the following "YOY" (2011) they have risen even higher. The only living vinyl testament to the awesome "quirkadelica" that was the short lived (2004-2006) LA based Blackblack. This cult band comprised Diva Dompe (bass/vocals) later to feature in west coast dub noiseniks Pocahaunted, sister Lola Dompe (drums) and bizarrely Alex Greenwald's schizoid alter ego Clark Schadelkopf (guitar). He of course went on to form Phantom Planet, collaborate with Mark Ronson on a cover of Radiohead's "Just" and other improbable antics. As for this LP and the band's general sound...think off kilter early Cure meets the lighter end of Velvet Underground or Joy Division. Fantastical, sci-fi, exotic birds draped in sonic colour... you'll get a good feel from the inspired videos for "Emerald Forest" and "Sophia" to be found on Youtube. Limited to 250 copies. Guests included Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, British veteran session pianist Nicky Hopkins, future Airplane drummer Joey Covington on percussion, David Crosby, and Stephen Stills. 'Volunteers' was one of the earliest 16-track recordings. The back cover of the album shows a picture of the MM-1000 professional 16-track tape recorder built by Ampex which was used to record the album. Among the highlights of this impressive set are the title track, 'We Can Be Together', 'Hey Fredrick', Good Shepherd', 'Eskimo Blue Day', and 'Wooden Ships'. Musician. Artist. Philosopher. Obsessive. Enthusiast. Innovator. Bullshitter. Joker. Gentleman. Beast. These are only a few of the paradoxical faces of the underground cottage industry known as Jussi Lehtisalo. In 1991, this proud native of Pori, Finland, swaggered into the public eye via a self-released 7-inch by a hypnotic little project called Circle. Since then he's served as the group's sole constant, shepherding ever-changing personnel and filtering deliberately repetitive riffs through dozens of rock and non-rock idioms. Add in a bevy of insanely varied, albeit somehow congruent satellite bands-Ektroverde, Eturivi, Kirvasto, Pharaoh Overlord, Lusiferiinin Armosta, Slussenanalys, Split Cranium, and scores more-and his cottage industry becomes an empire. Pile on the independent record labels he operates-Ektro, Full Contact, Super Mets, and Ruton-and that empire expands into a cosmos. Despite his ceaseless activity, Lehtisalo's first proper solo LP, the subdued, introspective Rotta, didn't appear until 2010. Shying away from ego and excess, the album evokes a dimly lit stroll down snowdrift-clotted city streets where an unabated wind carries the familiar but vaguely sinister chatter of eccentrics, drunks, animals, and ghosts. The schizophrenic follow-up, Interludes for Prepared Beast, takes yet another abrupt left turn. With a title that references (and perhaps parodies) John Cage's piano molestations, Lehtisalo's latest effort scans like a transcription of his own central nervous system. Each side of vinyl comprises an unpredictable 17-minute suite that fidgets and sprawls in a neon procession of stabbing fuzz guitars and clacking, rattlesnake percussion. Noise, prog, metal, punk, ambient, and electronic fragments stutter, shift, and melt beneath an abstract sun. During key moments, a benevolent ogre chants random absurdities before glassine synths and psychedelic sound effects drag him out to sea. Stubb contains 8 modern salutes to the early 70s with lyrical themes covering love, loss, the open road, women and the powerful force of nature. SWITCH OPENS from Stockholm, Sweden started out in 2000 as Fingerspitzengefuhl. They made two albums for Kooljunk Communications, "Fingerspitzengefuhl in 2004 and "Happy Doomsday" in 2006, and decided to continue as SWITCH OPENS in 2008. The three albums have all been highly acclaimed in Swedish and European rock press, such as Close-Up Magazine, Sweden Rock Magazine, Metal Hammer, Rock Hard and numerous webzines. "Happy Doomsday" was nominated as best metal/punk in the Swedish independent music awards (Manifest) in 2006. The band has done extensive gigging on their own, but also supported bands such as NEUROSIS, SCARS ON BROADWAY and ENTOMBED. The band has earned a reputation as an adrenalized live act, crushing everything in their way. Switch Opens signed to GMR Music Group in October 2008 and the self-titled record was released in Scandinavia in September 2009 and in the rest of Europe in the end of October. In January 2010, the album won P3 Guld, the Swedish national radio music awards, in the Rock/Metal category. In May 2011, the band changed label once again and as result, "Joint Clash" will be released by Transubstans Records in February! 3LP Set! The first ever career anthology spanning three decades of solo material by the visionary VELVET UNDERGROUND-member! As one quarter of one of the most influential bands of the twentieth century, Maureen "Moe" Tuckers work in the Velvet Underground created a template for all rock drummers that followed. Even today, Moes primal, tribal rhythms can be heard in countless songs from artists around the globe. Her no- nonsense style-spare kit, no drum stool, almost no cymbals- conveyed an urgency and an honesty that was the foundation of the bands sound. In a patchouli-soaked world of 20 minute double-bass drum solos, Moe kept it simple, direct and to the point. As Lou Reed put it, "Shes the driving force. The hardcore heart of the Velvets mindset." Following her tenure with VU, Moe emerged as a solo artist, building a body of work that stretched over three decades. Ranging from home recordings to collaborations with members of Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Half-Japanese and her former band, the songs cover a gamut of styles but all bear the unmistakable thumbprint of their creator. Released by various independent labels on LPs, EPs, singles and compact discs, collecting her catalog has been a daunting task. This compilation finally gathers those far-flung tracks in one place. More than just a drummer, Moe is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, sax, keyboards, harmonica and whatever else the song might need. For prime examples of her DIY recording technique, check out her rendition of Chuck Berrys "Around and Around" and her Bo Diddley tribute "Ellas," both originally found on her debut LP Playin Possum. Recording that album at home on a four-track tape recorder allowed Moe to reconnect with her rock roots and eventually led to a return to live performing. Moving to Douglas, Georgia as a single mother in the early 80s greatly impacted her songwriting. Themes of workaday blues and tough times are reflected in songs like "Spam Again" and "Thats B.A.D." Loss is also a recurring topic, as in "Andy," a touching tribute to the late Andy Warhol. However, it is not all darkness and melancholia. Bursts of exuberance in songs like "Hey Mersh!" and her loving cover of "Bo Diddley" radiate infectious joy. Moe also faces the VU legacy head on, reinterpreting seminal tracks like "Heroin," "Im Waiting for the Man," "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Im Sticking with You" and making them her own. Of all the former Velvets, Moes solo work is perhaps the most direct continuation of the bands sound and structure. She never lost her love for pure, lean rock and roll. As one quarter of one of the most influential bands of the twentieth century, Maureen "Moe" Tuckers work in the Velvet Underground created a template for all rock drummers that followed. Even today, Moes primal, tribal rhythms can be heard in countless songs from artists around the globe. Her no- nonsense style-spare kit, no drum stool, almost no cymbals- conveyed an urgency and an honesty that was the foundation of the bands sound. In a patchouli-soaked world of 20 minute double-bass drum solos, Moe kept it simple, direct and to the point. As Lou Reed put it, "Shes the driving force. The hardcore heart of the Velvets mindset." Following her tenure with VU, Moe emerged as a solo artist, building a body of work that stretched over three decades. Ranging from home recordings to collaborations with members of Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Half-Japanese and her former band, the songs cover a gamut of styles but all bear the unmistakable thumbprint of their creator. Released by various independent labels on LPs, EPs, singles and compact discs, collecting her catalog has been a daunting task. This compilation finally gathers those far-flung tracks in one place. More than just a drummer, Moe is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, sax, keyboards, harmonica and whatever else the song might need. For prime examples of her DIY recording technique, check out her rendition of Chuck Berrys "Around and Around" and her Bo Diddley tribute "Ellas," both originally found on her debut LP Playin Possum. Recording that album at home on a four-track tape recorder allowed Moe to reconnect with her rock roots and eventually led to a return to live performing. Moving to Douglas, Georgia as a single mother in the early 80s greatly impacted her songwriting. Themes of workaday blues and tough times are reflected in songs like "Spam Again" and "Thats B.A.D." Loss is also a recurring topic, as in "Andy," a touching tribute to the late Andy Warhol. However, it is not all darkness and melancholia. Bursts of exuberance in songs like "Hey Mersh!" and her loving cover of "Bo Diddley" radiate infectious joy. Moe also faces the VU legacy head on, reinterpreting seminal tracks like "Heroin," "Im Waiting for the Man," "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Im Sticking with You" and making them her own. Of all the former Velvets, Moes solo work is perhaps the most direct continuation of the bands sound and structure. She never lost her love for pure, lean rock and roll. INERDS have a lot of powerviolence elements and tempo changes, but with riffs that are more moody than misanthropic. Their decently written songs are made great by the interesting sounds that the band went for, including what sounds like distortion on the vocals and a thin but piercing, fuzzy, solid-state guitar tone (think that of Reagan Youth, but harder hitting). The male and female vocalists trade off, with the former doing a SPAZZ/INFEST thing that sounds muffled (though not in a bad way) and the latter makes me think of the singer of WALLS OF JERICHO, of all things. COWORKERS are soulful yet pessimistic, falling somewhere between later BORN AGAINST and Revolution Summer stuff both musically and thematically. Not as much to elaborate on here 		PUNK/HARDCORE

A Drum and Bass duo from Buffalo New York that seem to be influenced by those heavy bands from the early to late 90's on AMREP ie: Hammerhead, Helmet, etc. Killer packaging on the 7" itself but I wish I could say the music moved me a little more. It is going in the right direction but the thing that I think kills it would be the production. It just sounds too thin. If you wanna sound sinister you need to go the distance! Push everything up in the red or get a guitar player. The distorted bass just ain't cutting it. The songs themselves though a bit math rock sounding aren't all bad. I actually think this record gets better with repeated listens. These dudes just need to work out some kinks and they will be on their way to laying waste to wimpy indie bands across the country. Listen to more Halo Of Flies and call me in the morning! I have faith in you boys! 		PUNK/HARDCORE

Punk Rock hit Phoenix, Arizona in a slow and violent way. The dirt brain mentality of "rock" fans in the area showed resistance to any new musical group that didn't conform to the model. Finally, after a Ramones show in town, four young guys decided starting to play punk rock: The Names were born! The band and headed into the studio. Songs like 'Young Romantics', 'Love/Hate', and the anthem 'I Don't Like Radio' gathered the band airplay on the AM radio station K- 15. Bands such as the Rubber City Rebels, the Gears and many others came through the area and The Names opened for most of them. The last show of the band was on New Years 1980. For fans of bluesy, hard-charging boogie rock, the legendary band Humble Pie is an icon. Current artists such as the Black Crowes invoke its name and that of its leader Steve Marriott with nothing less than reverence. That Humble Pie was co-founded by Peter Frampton, enjoying a notable renaissance of late, provides even greater impetus for these new reissues of the bands classic albums. In 1969, Marriott, who had left Small Faces, and Frampton, formerly of the Herd, joined with ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley. Humble Pie's first single, Natural Born Woman (aka Natural Born Boogie) hit the U.K. Top 10 and led to its debut album, As Safe as Yesterday Is. Humble Pie live, however, was explosive, loud and raucous. Frampton left after the tour, replaced by Dave "Clem" Clempson, A year later, Humble Pie disbanded. Marriott and Shirley briefly reformed the group in the '80s but accidents and ill health plagued Marriott and the band. Humble Pie was a transitional album and a harbinger of the band's new, heavier direction. The material was darker than their previous two efforts, with striking contrasts in volume and style - Peter Frampton's gentle Earth and Water Song is buttressed between two of the heaviest tracks on the record, the band composed One Eyed Trouser Snake Rumba, and a cover of Willie Dixon's I'm Ready. Drummer Jerry Shirley contributed a rare lead vocal on his song Only a Roach, a country-tinged rocker. This was their first release under the auspices of new American manager Dee Anthony - whod, pushed for a louder, tighter sound both live and in the studio - and for their new label, A&M Records. Strong Love explores the first wave of openly gay songwriting, and begins with the earliest known example, 1972s A Gay Song by London hippie collective Everyone Involved. Across 15 tracks, the compilation takes in disarmingly personal folk, uplifting soul, outsider country and dark synth-rock. But tellingly, none of its songs could be considered well-known. New Yorks Steven Grossman released the first major label album by an openly gay artist in 1974, and Tom Robinson hit the UK Top 20 with the fiery Glad To Be Gay in 1978, but these are the exceptions. Most Strong Love artists released their own self-funded recordings in very limited numbers. Unlike their lesbian counterparts, who joined forces to create long-lasting record labels, strong distribution networks and considerable sales figures for artists such as Cris Williamson and Holly Near, gay male musicians in the 1970s existed largely in solitary bubbles. Which doesnt mean they didnt carve out niches of their own. Eccentric one man band Chris Robison played with the New York Dolls and Elephants Memory, while LA glam seducer Smokey saw members of the Stooges and Quiet Riot pass through his backing band. Steven Grossman was covered by Twiggy and Scrumbly & Martin are justifiably infamous for their work with San Francisco drag hippies the Cockettes. Whether known or not, what the songs on Strong Love illustrate is the vision, talent and raw courage that drove 1970s songwriters to sacrifice popular careers for the sake of honesty and selfexpression. Features evocative introduction from drummer RIchard Dworkin (who played with Blackberri and Buena Vista and is one of the few to have witnessed many Strong Love artists firsthand), the album is a powerful tribute to pioneering artists whose music has been neglected for too long. Formed around high school friends Bek Moore, Rachael Cooke and Alison Bolger in the very early 90s, Clag played a kind of psychotic kiddie punk, full of one note Casio keyboard solos and lyrics about cows, goldfish and gravy-covered hot chips. Their apparent innocence, however, was merely a front, disguising examinations of the human psyche that grew darker as the band progressed. Musically they were equally confusing, staking out a bizarre middle ground between the Shaggs, Bikini Kill and the Banana Splits, In short, Clag were one of the most head-scratchingly strange bands in the world. Clag members went on to play in bands such as Beaches, Panel Of Judges and Minimum Chips, but in the intervening years a considerable legend has grown up around their first musical venture. Copies of their original singles are now treasured artefacts. This 23 track reissue comes with a 16 page booklet packed with photos and extensive liner notes. It includes all their officially released recordings, plus a whole raft of bonus material, including a live-to-air session on Brisbanes 4ZZZ-FM, and a chaotic, foul-mouthed live recording from Melbourne's Empress Hotel. The first collaboration between Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters, "Underrated Silence" has been one of Bureau Bs most successful releases so far. Ulrich Schnauss (famous for his three solo albums as well as for his remix work) teamed up with Mark Peters (bass player, guitarist and singer of the British band Engineers) to create a bacchanalian instrumental combination of ambient, electronica and shoegaze sounds. "Balcony Sunset" is a track from this session that was not released on the album. Kurt "Pyrolator" Dahlke is one of the key figures in the late 70s to late 80s German music scene. He is the co-founder of the influential Ata Tak record label and has been a member of legendary bands such as D.A.F. and Fehlfarben. "Neuland" was his first solo album release in 24 years! Kreidler and Tarwater are important protagonists of the new German electronic music scene. Both bands combine electronic and analogue sounds. One of the main differences: While Kreidler makes mainly instrumental music, Tarwater use vocals on nearly every track. Kreidler formed in 1994 in Dusseldorf (home of NEU! and Kraftwerk). They have released eight regular studio albums to this day and have remixed artists such as Depeche Mode, Einstnde Neubauten and Faust among 20 others and cooperated with artists like Klaus Dinger (NEU!), Add (N) to X, Young Gods, Theo Altenberg, Momus, Leo Garcia, Pyrolator and Chicks on Speed. Their music has been used for high profile fashion shows (Chanel, Lacoste, Giles Deacon), films, theatre and dance performances. Their contribution to our exclusive Record Store Day vinyl consist of two previously unreleased tracks, recorded during the sessions for their latest release "Tank": The first one, "Team", takes us to the countryside and has a surprisingly positive aura; "Big Eden" drops us back into the Jetztzeit, even hinting at echoes of Manchester Rave and 80s Indie Brit Pop. Is this something like the new sound of Dusseldorf? The Berlin-based electronic duo Tarwater, consisting of Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok, have been releasing music since 1995. ...O E1 Poder De La Nada'. When psycho-spatial composer NELSON GASTALDI passed away in 2009 at the age of 77, he left behind a unique musical legacy that is only now beginning to be unveiled. A self-described "musical nihilist with noble and mystic origins" (as well as an accomplished visual artist), Gastaldi supported himself and his family with a job at an electric company in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while creating an astonishing body of work that went virtually unheard during his lifetime. Synthesizing into his music a wide range of interests (medicine, linguistics, Chinese and German philosophy), he welcomed paranormal and initiatic experiences into the compositional process, creating homemade Sibelius-meets-Sun Ra symphonies. The only previous publication of his work was in Bananafish #18, which featured an excerpt of Symphony No. 3 on an accompanying CD. The same issue also contains his sole English-language interview, where he says, "The human being runs at the side of a river. Strings Of Consciousness have united acoustic music and digital technology. Their sound is meant and dreamt to be adventurous and creative. Even if they sculpt and craft their music with a lot of focus on detail and days and days of editing, the most important is to convey emotions, feelings. Many musicians and singers take part in the collective though the music is composed by Herve Vincenti and Philippe Petit from Marseille. 'From Beyond Love' is the second installment in their trilogy involving various vocalists, whose first effort 'Our Moon Is Full' was internationally acclaimed back in 2007. In the meantime they released a disc of remixes and a collaboration with Angel featuring Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM), Hildur Gudnadottir and Ilpo Väisänen, and took longer to produce this new one because in the meantime Petit was really busy with his solo and collaborative works. Omnimoment is a collection of Hitoshi Kojo's site-specific soundworks that were originally presented as installations or live-installation/performances between 2006 and 2009. All the works were created for a particular location by using objects that were found in and around that location, mixed with environmental sound. They were presented in long durations, from two hours to ten weeks, via multi-channel speaker systems, blending with the acoustic sound and resonance of the space. For this CD, the works have all been edited and re-composed in stereo using the partial documents of the respective projects. He intends this CD to stand alone as a work in its own right, without necessary reference to the original situations. However the basic structures and the original sounds that were created at (for) the actual situations have been retained as much as possible. Strings Of Consciousness have united acoustic music and digital technology. Their sound is meant and dreamt to be adventurous and creative. Even if they sculpt and craft their music with a lot of focus on detail and days and days of editing, the most important is to convey emotions, feelings. Many musicians and singers take part in the collective though the music is composed by Herve Vincenti and Philippe Petit from Marseille. 'From Beyond Love' is the second installment in their trilogy involving various vocalists, whose first effort 'Our Moon Is Full' was internationally acclaimed back in 2007. In the meantime they released a disc of remixes and a collaboration with Angel featuring Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM), Hildur Gudnadottir and Ilpo Väisänen, and took longer to produce this new one because in the meantime Petit was really busy with his solo and collaborative works. But here they are with an incredible line-up consisting of Julie Christmas (Made Out Of Babies), Andria Degens (Pantaleimon / Current 93), Graham Lewis, Cosey Fanni Tutti and no less than Lydia Lunch in duo with Eugene Robinson from Oxbow. "Geo-poetical" project by Electroacoustic's ensemble lays an emphasis on primitive mystery and "elusiveness" of the folklore of North-Western region of Ukraine, famous Rivne Polissya, on its "free" and at the same time very "closed" nature. "Cultural vector is nord/ouest" (G.Debord), in this piece it means not so much "natural spreading" of culture, as it means rapt "listening" to "sounds" and "signs" of nord/ouest. Structural idea of the piece is based on creating an original heterophonic ensemble, combining electronic and instrumental means with folklore material. Dancing Time: The Best of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973 - 77 by The Funkees is the latest title on Soundway to mine the rich musical output of 60s and 70s Nigeria. For the 5 year period this compilation spans The Funkees output crackled with dance floor fire. Having featured on three of Soundways most popular titles, across the definitive Nigeria Special compilation series, we felt The Funkees output deserved closer inspection. Presented here (on CD, download & double gatefold LP) are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves hand picked by Soundways Miles Cleret from a selection of the bands 45s and 2 long players. In the early 1970s The Funkees were the number-one east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit. Here they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. The album was produced and arranged by Quincy Jones, who at the time was just twenty-one years old. The success of 'Helen Merrill' prompted Mercury to sign her for an additional four-album contract. Though born in the Mississippi Delta, Earl Hooker's family moved to Chicago when he was just a baby and by the mid-'40s he was performing with one of the early legends of Chicago blues, Robert Nighthawk. Hooker is perhaps best known for his distinct slide guitar style and as a sideman for such luminaries as Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and John Lee Hooker (his cousin). In 1968, he assembled a crack band including Pinetop Perkins, and Freddie Roulette, and hre they're heard in fine form on what is probably Hooker's most well-known and best recorded effort. "Flying High!" With this psychedelic combat cry one of the most eccentric and innovative projects from Austria/Vienna is returning. On their ninth studio album Der Blutharsch continues travelling in the direction they took back in 2005, when the former guru of martial industrial/military pop, Albin Julius, and his band, rocketed towards the deep space of psychedelia. One of the most controversial bands of the last decade staked its claim anew, totally breaking with old images, clichés and tunes. Starting already on the last album "The Philosopher's Stone" the turning to the walls of guitars and repetitive chants was already to recognize. "Flying High!" turns this to a programmatic climax. If you start thinking on Sunn O))), Guru Guru, Amon Düül, Tangerine Dream or Godspeed You! Black Emperor you are not to far away, but still inherent is the big part of apocalyptic feeling which you are already used to. Highly influenced by the American West Coast sound of the late sixties with a small dosis of that what some people use to call Krautrock. The tracks are slightly developing into eachother, ambient parts followed by ecstatic deathrock songs and then they glide into a wall of sound. The guestparts on the vocal side is full of well known artists: Besides Bain Wolfkind and Albin Julius or Gianni Serusi, you discover 1980s legend Patrick Leagas who himself celebrates the title song in his typical distinctive manner. "Flying High!" is a dark record, it mixes eros and deathwish, productivity with destructivity. Since the release of "When Did Wonderland End?", Der Blutharsch have mutated into a psychedelic rock monster; their motto, "into new territories!", symbolic for this mutation, a battle fought not by marching but by flying, "Flying high!". "Flying High!" is a weird trip for blown minds through the dark worlds of today's society, passing love, hate and lust during its journey into the center of the sun! When the concept for this album was in its seminal stages, we came to the realization that there were several songs from Changes' earlier years which had yet to be released in any form. Some had been recorded on early "demo" tapes while others had not. Thus, it was decided that instead of using previously recorded tracks, we would return to the studio to create new renditions of these songs. Additionally, the arrangements, bridges, and harmonies were enhanced to better reflect our current style. Also included in this album are three new songs, "Somewhere in the Night," "Eldorado," and "Paradiso". Essentially, the album bridges the years from Changes' inception to its present incarnation.
