HOWLIN RAIN - THE GOOD LIFE
After a year and a half of pre-production work with producer Rick Rubin, Howlin Rain found themselves with an overabundance of material and an increasing gap of time between the forecasted release of their forthcoming new album and their previous one, Magnificent Fiend. On the eve of hitting the studio to record number three, the band took ten days to complete this mini-album. It functions as both an introduction to the upcoming full album due in 2011 as well as a piece that stands on its own. Coming off the extended period of writing and rehearsing, Howlin Rain knocked out a high-quality performance off the cuff and against the clock. All three songs were tracked in one evening live in the same room at Lucky Cat Studios by Phil Manley (Trans Am, The Fucking Champs) and then overdubbed and mixed by Tim Green at Louder Studios in a handful of days. The time that elapsed from when the band set up at Lucky Cat until The Good Life was completely finished and mastered was a week and a half. In the midst of a journey to complete an album that will have been years in the making, this 12-inch is a catharsis of immediacy blasted down from that long highway-a postcard from the outer regions the band has navigated for many moons.

Ltd. ed. of 300. "Fille Qui Mousse ("Girl With Froth"??) is one the most mythical albums to be released(?) from France. Recorded in 1972, it was issued in 73 (evidently only as a test pressing in an edition of maybe 50) by the legendary Futura label. Often referred to as the French Faust, FQMs album mixed collage, psychedelic rock, surreal poetry, and organically tapped noise purity with the absolute best of experimental 70s rock-and-beyond. One of the essential reissues of the 70s rock underground." - Bichon. "Straight off, we plunge into that Faust structure...riffing with a psychedelic bent, hints of Gong too...we move into bizarrely constructed patterns of percussive sound and chopped-up rock music, and just as a musical focus takes shape it disappears. A poem, recited by a girl, over an urban landscape populated by numerous barking dogs then gives way to an intensely strange mangled web of sound thats almost brain numbing. And, yet more in the way of strangeness is a piano based piece that recalls some of Roger Doyles early experiments. The only actual song has the most bizarre lyrics (in English) and is followed by an excursion in distorted and processed guitar. Next is where the folk music comes in, but even with gypsy violin FQMs interpretation of folk is strange and twisted. 0352324 LP MJJLP 312 0889397831219 KLIMT	JOSEFUS - DEAD MAN One of the great lost albums of Southern hard rock, 'Dead Man' was the 1970 debut album of the Houston band, JOSEFUS. Formed in 1969, Josefus soon garnered a huge live following, opening for acts like ZZ Top and Grand Funk Railroad. Unfortunately, their debut album, a heavy mix of Zeppelin-inspired acid rock with a Southern twist, was destined to obscurity, due largely to the fact that it was not released on a proper label. (The album eventually was released on the band's own label, Hookaah.) Just a few months prior to recording Dead Man, however, Josefus had actually recorded an album's worth of material for a producer in Phoenix, but the album was never released. This is what prompted the band to go back into the studio with their own money to record 'Dead Man'. 'Dead Man' was, therefore naturally, a mix of some of the songs from this earlier album (tentatively called: 'Get Off My Case') along with some new ones. Pioneering and leading among the Swedish instrumental psych/progressive groups. They electrified the folk music and shrugged off the knee-tassel. Keith Law is well known as the songwriter for the Velvett Fogg and the leader for Jardine (see ANAZITISI Records ARLP 70-17F). "Eyes in the wind" is a collection of 12 songs, all penned & recorded by Keith himself, between 1966-1981. All are totally unreleased. Keith sings and plays all the instruments (electric & acoustic & bow guitars, keyboards, bass, percussion and effects). Mainly acoustic album but heavy, fuzzy and phaser guitars are all over. A full of soul and deep feelings atmosphere vibrates the sensitive lyrics of charismatic Keith Law. Put it under the category of acid folk, loner/songwriter or mellow psychedelia, wherever you prefer. It's a true gem.and it would be a pity to leave all these recordings shelved. Upon hearing Baker play, Jimmy Page is said to have commented, "thats the best white bluesman I ever heard!" Produced, written and arranged by Don Nix (Mar-Keys and Paris Pilot) at Memphis Ardent Studios, Molochs 1970 debut album was is an excellent mix of hard blues and acid rock, with amazing guitar solos by Baker. It was also the first time the song "Goin' Down" appeared on record (famously covered by Jeff Beck). Although Moloch definitely had the chops to make it big (apparently Freddie King covered a few of the bands songs and would hang out and jam with Baker when ever he was in town), they lacked distribution. 0352521 LP ASHLP 3038 PHOENIX	SHINKI CHEN - SHINKI CHEN & HIS FRIENDS Shinki Chen was one of the leading figures of the Japanese psychedelic rock scene in the early 70s, seen as a Jimi Hendrix type figure in Japan at the time, the last recorded material (there's some with the band Power House and Foodbrain) consists of this album and the later album released by a different bad line up known as Speed, Glue and Shinki and their debut Eve was released in 1971. Whilst the band's style is often compared to Krautrock cousins, it lacks the dreamy lack of direction that a lot of them have and does not have the bore factor of the lighter-weight progressive rock acts. 0352563 LP MJJLP 311 0889397831110 KLIMT	SUN RA & THE BLUES PROJECT - BATMAN AND ROBIN This novelty album, released in 1966 during the height of the Batman & Robin craze, was initially credited to the "The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale" and featured an album full of tracks based on the popular TV show like "The Batman Theme Song", "The Penguin Chase", and "The Batcave". The album is entirely instrumental, except for someone singing "Batmaaaan!" in the theme song. But the interesting thing about this album, and what makes it an absolute cult gem, are the musicians who are behind it all: basically a joint collaboration between Sun Ras Arkestra and Danny Kalbs Blues Project (one of the first psychedelic rock bands as well as one of the worlds first jam bands). "Dan and Dale" were actually blues guitarist Danny Kalb and Steve Katz (later of Blood, Sweat & Tears) on dueling guitars, while Sun Ra and Al Kooper take over organ duties (a Hammond B-3) and members of Ras Arkestra play sax. All I can think of when listening to this record is how much fun these guys, all formidable musicians, must have had putting it together. They both played in its Bananamoon band in Spain during summer '68 and in the south of France at the beginning of '69. They formed Ame son in June '69 with Franois Garrel on flute and Bernard Lavialle on guitar. The "Catalyse" album has been released in 1970. Ame son played in all the greatest festivals like Amougies, Les halles, Biot, Le Bourget and had a lot of success from both the audience and critics. The music was strongly influenced by early Gong with long psychedelic jam- sessions leaded by flute and guitar. They split in June'71 for the first time. However it was the lineup up of Robinson , Johns , Fortesque and Kash which featured on the bands debut album released on the Infinity label. At the Mountains of Madness was recorded in late 1970 and released early 1971. The album was produced by Richard Batchens and featured a guest appearnce of Bon Scott on recorder and percussion. The album reached number 7 in the Australian national charts. The classic track Seasons of change which had been originally written by Robinson for the group Fratenity would prove to be one of the group's most memorable tracks. I read online where someone made a comparison to Jethro Tull. Appeared on vinyl in 1980 but if I remember right was actually written years earlier, or at least the band had existed for years before their sole album finally came out to deaf ears. What else could one expect at the time when artistic prog rock was completely out of fashion? Stylistically this album could have come at the later haydays of prog, say 1975 (when TABULA RASA's debut came out); if there are sonic details or production more modern than mid-70's, they are neatly interwoven into the whole. And what's best, the album does not sound dated as so many of the late 70's/ early 80's albums do. Sound is tidy and clear but not clinic at all. It even has a folky feel.Indeed, as Kenethlevine has already mentioned, this band comes close to the recent Finnish band called VIIMA and especially their wonderful debut which featured a female vocalist. SCAPA FLOW's vocalist is Pia-Maria Noponen who afterwards moved to Italy and has sadly passed away, if I remember the liner notes accurately. Also flute (and sax) is featured, in a more or less same manner as in Tabula Rasa or Viima (don't think of Ian Anderson). The latter two bands where part of the members who finally set up DETRITUS in 1999 and existed until 2005 when they call it a day and forced their energy into new projects such like "Visions of War" and nummerous others. This nine tracks are a premortal recording put down in 2005 before "Saar", singer of Detritus, died in 2006 and hence the band never released anything, this release might be a memorial and a document and in the age of sterile "neo-crust" it's about time to bring this back on the map I guess and they fill the gap quite well between early UNHINGED and DISAFFECT... for name dropping purpose if you can't handle. "Tank" is a continuation of Kreidler, of course. Indeed, "Tank" does relate to the narrative of "Mosaik 2014", but "Tank" also deals with the break from that narrative. And in some respects the album recalls their very first effort, "Riva" from 1994, which may lie in the pace of its development, or the fact that they have tried to keep the structure of the pieces simple and direct, that we used the computer more as a canister, a container or a vessel and less as an operating room. And of course, the fact that Kreidler has once again become a four-piece band, a band with a clear understanding of roles: a drummer, a bassist who can also reach for the guitar, a keyboard player and a man for the electronics. They have been asked to remix artists such as Einstuerzende Neubauten, Depeche Mode and Faust among 20 others and cooperated with artists like Klaus Dinger (NEU!), Add (N) to X, Young Gods, Theo Altenberg, Momus, Leo Garcia, Pyrolator and Chicks on Speed. Their music has been used for high profile fashion shows (Chanel, Lacoste, Giles Deacon), films, theatre and dance performances.

Charlies only visible offering to the record buying public was really anything but. Due to it's rarity, "The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing", issued by Takoma Records in 1967, has been a source of consternation for in-the-know types for years. "Outside/Inside", the second and only other Charlie Nothing LP, originally issued by Everitt Enterprises, thematically follows with two sidelong flute-based instrumentals. Nowhere on wax will you find more palpable preserved air of a real-time dropout scene than with these sides of Nothing. It is a wonder that these records circulated at all outside the vacuum in which they were created. Between 1967 and 1968, Eliane Radigue was the assistant of Pierre Henry in his studio, mainly for the editing of "L'Apocalypse de Jean". He also put her in charge of organizing his sound archive according to different criteria. It was an endless work. there were incredible sounds, a true sound library! Eliane Radigue really enjoyed to do this work, even if it took a long time. So, sometimes, she decided to set the machines of the studio to do some little work on her own. "Jouet Electronique" and "Elemental I" were born this way as a kind of recreation during her time as a studio assistant. This album solidifies Turman as a cut above the rest with respect to his talent and his natural ear for experimental composition. Turman first came onto the industrial scene in the late '70s as the ominous "other half" of legendary noise outfit NON, alongside BOYD RICE, together releasing the now classic first NON single, 'Mode of Infection' b/w 'Knife Ladder' 7-inch in 1977. After parting ways, Turman went on an excursion of self-released cassettes to which he fused every possible influence at his disposal, culling together past habits of experimental know-how and going forward into uncharted terrain. While Wilkins grew up in the city, family parties and neighborhood picnics featuring country blues and fife and drum bands were never farther than a short drive over the Mississippi state line. John Wilkins' father, the venerated blues and gospel singer ROBERT WILKINS, was the principal influence on his young son's development as a musician.
