Boris and Ian Astbury (THE CULT and THE DOORS). This finely-crafted four-song release, simply entitled BXI, was tracked and mixed in Tokyo in late April. Astbury's iconic rock vocals are a perfect match for Boris's straightforward, laid-back, but still raw and imaginative song writing constructed for the mini album; another intriguing display within the band's ever-morphing, extensive rsum of releases, tours and collaborations. BXI showcases the already unclassifiable rock of Boris in an entirely new light, and shows a new side to one of rock and roll's most notorious singers. The release features three new original tracks, as well as a cover of The Cult's song "Rain", ethereally vocalised by Boris guitarist Wata. Art and design for the release was commissioned to Stephen O'Malley (Ideologic.org, SUNNO))), etc.). The result is stunning. Having spent the previous decade taking elements of the classical avant-garde (i.e. Karlheinz Stockhausen) and underground rock (i.e Velvet Underground) to create a kind of genreless "new music"-and influencing countless bands in the process-Can had reached the natural end of its journey. Although founding members Irmin Schmidt (keyboards) and Jaki Liebezeit (drums) can still be heard, Rebop Kwaku Baah and Rosko Gee of Traffic fame have been added to the mix, with former bassist Holger Czukay doing the editing. Here original bass player Holger Czukay is replaced by a much more funky Rosko Gee (of Traffic Fame)-who plays a prominent role in shaping the sound of this album, writing and singing on a number of the albums tracks-while drumming duties are shared between Jaki Liebezeit and Reebop Kwaku Baah (also from Traffic), making this one of Cans more groove-heavy releases. Kalacakra's "Crawling to Lhasa" is one of the few German psychedelic classics. Their 1972 LP has become such an attractive collectors' item (today's value is 300 euros in mint condition) that several bootlegs have appeared on the market. The legitimate LP release on the Garden of Delights label is limited to 1000 numbered copies and contains a 4-page colour insert in LP size, featuring a detailed history (in German and English language) of the Duisburg band and their community together with a detailed discography, cover and label repros, and numerous photographs, which reflect the sombre, stoned atmosphere of the record in a perfect manner. "Raga no. 11" is probably the best track, with "Nearby Shiras" reflecting the most psychedelic aspect of the band's music. Originally released in 1971 the first and self-titled album by Nine Days Wonder was one of the very first recordings for the newly found label Bacillus of producer Peter Hauke. Nine Days Wonder with their international line-up consisting of bandfounder and singer Walter Seyffer, Rolf Henning (guitar, piano), Karl Mutschlechner (bass) from Austria, John Earle (vocals saxophone, flute, guitar) from Ireland and drummer Martin Roscoe from England, taking inspiration from Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, King Crimson and Soft Machine. The albums four titles were recorded by top recording engineer Dieter Dirks in his studio in Cologne. It turned out exceptional, both with regard to music and to artistic form: the music highly complex, with surprising arrangements, ranging from rough guitar riffs to the feel-good sound of acoustic guitar, unisonal baubles of guitar and saxophone, weird and harmonic songs, sudden changes of tempi - the album features such a multitude of facets that multiple hearings are required to appreciate them all, and they certainly make for entertaining listening. A musical fireworks display bubbling over with ideas that need not shun international comparison. From the artistic point of view the band had also come up with quite something. The first edition was released in a cover made of green foam, quite extraordinary and rather pricey, so the later editions featured the "fish cover" created by Hipgnosis for the English release. This reissue is an exact production of the original first edition af the album with a cover made of green foam and double gatefold sleeve. Remastered from the original master tape the sound is brilliant. Album comes with a 4-pages insert, which contains not only the first part of the band history (the latter will follow with Nine Days Wonder albums II - IV) but also rare and unseen photos and of course the "fish-cover" of the second edition of the albums release. This is a real gem for all the lovers of the genre. After 10 years of existing Long Hair celebrates its anniversary with this special limited edition. 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK

It's his final LP and is overflowing with all the elements that romanticized, loner / stoner music claims, an encoded expression of highly private feelings, an ambiguous, emotional quotient, and a dark, murkily melodic vibe. It's a record that first and foremost lives and breathes with an endless stream of great songs. EFENDI'S GARDEN was - despite of their exotic musical sound - a band from Hannover. Founder Wolfgang Krantz formerly played with the bands called JANE and HARLIS, then he took a year off, to make a terrific return in 1979 with EFENDI'S GARDEN. Activated by the former bandmember of JANE, Klaus Hess, as well as bassplayer Frank Meier, drummer Wolfgang Schreiner, Saxophone player Heinz Alberding and the uncommon singer Thomas Stender, Krantz presented a collective which had to search one's own kind in former musical aera of West Germany. Arabian singing, amplified by a megaphone, between shrill and hypnotic but always very intensive joining the slick arranged music. Partly like a soft ballade then again hardrock sound are to be heard and are integrated into the musical concept. Pure relief - for this band normally all doors would have been open for future business - allthemore the live gigs built real hightlights, due to the optical appearance of singer Thomas Stender alias Curtis Efendi. But he lived in West Berlin thus no constant tours/rehearsals could take place. 1989 EFENDI'S GARDEN came together again, reason was an appearance in the Capitol, Hannover. 1990 they entered the Peppermint studios with new song-ideas where finally 10 titles have been recorded but never appeared on a sound carrier. (This changed with the cd you have in hand, all songs have been added as bonus tracks because they really are perfect examples for great rockmusic). After the recording session the band unfortunately dissolved. Klaus Hess still is on tour with MOTHER JANE, Wolfgang Krantz belongs to the actual cast of Peter Panka's JANE 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK

Epic early to mid-1970's instrumental psychedelic space-rock from the Pyramid Records archive, said to be pseudonymous after-hours studio sessions featuring the biggest names on the Krautrock scene at the time; heavy drums, jamming guitars and Hammond organ: in short, and amazing improvised free-form trip of impressive magnitude, on par with the music of Krautrock heavyweights like Neu! and Gila. An adventurous atmosphere throughout, whether the result is hallucinogenic and jazzy ('Jupiter'), the heavy freak and roll of 'The Returning,' with crushing guitars and massive, repetitive almost funky rhythm, or the Jimi Hendrix-inspired 'Godhead Dance.' Booklet essay examines the controversy surrounding this and other recordings first made known to the world via Virgin Records' three disc "Unknown Deutschland" series of compilations from the 1990's, including the fact that one "Genius P Orridge" is named as producer of the Golem album. It's clear enough to all that Genius P Orridge is strangely similar to the name Genesis P Orridge, he of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV fame. The fact that the other names on the Golem album jacket lead nowhere only adds to the confusion. In any case, a deep and fascinating record, still fresh despite the years... and meant to be played loud. quote: A space-rockin' hybrid of Gila and instrumental Hendrix type moves, Golem were another band from the lost Pyramid Records archive. Totally instrumental, and a feast for guitar fans... On first listen Golem comes across as a lost classic of Krautrock without a doubt, with a music that blends everything from Neu! to Novalis, and all crammed full of solos. Rereleased now as jewel case! "DO YOU WANT HEAD? BLOW YOUR MIND WITH THE HEAD SHOP ALBUM!" screams a commercial ad in New York's Screw magazine in l969. Here's the CD reissue from the mastertape, including bios, photos and 7 bonus tracks. The album was produced and arranged by Milan, aka Rick Rodell, and Max Ellen, both professionals in the music business. The band had garagy roots and evolved from Household Sponge to The Head Shop. Milans project that time was Licorice Schtik. Both outfits released a 45 record, which are 4 bonus tracks on this CD. This New York psychedelic underground project has its unique sound: soulful vocals, flying Hammond organ, fuzzy bass, distorted lead guitars, lots of percussive and weird--rhythm instruments, plus several unexpected stereo experiments. A highlight for sure is their haunted interpretation of Bobby Hebbs "Sunny"! - Conceptional, but also musically there are some parallels to Joe Meek and a major influence are The Beatles rawer and experimental period, not just because of the coverversion of "Revolution". Larry Coryell features as "wailing" guest musician on the track, " I Feel Love Comin on". "Listen with the Third Ear," and this album with 9 musical chapters will lead you into new musical and audiophile dimensions of psychedelic and progressive (garage) music. 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK

The second release (1969) from the home studio of future BBC Radiophonic Workshop composer Peter Howell and his musical partner John Ferdinando, makers of legendary albums under the names Alice Through the Looking Glass, Ithaca, Agincourt, and Friends. This private press album was recorded as the soundtrack for an underground film production by (later to be) renowned television director Ian Hamilton: "Tomorrow Come Someday." The soundtrack album, now presented from the master tapes, was originally pressed up in a tiny quantity for friends and people involved in the production; certainly no more than 70-80 copies were made. So what do we find here? A concept piece revolving around a village threatened by motorway expansion, and the efforts of short-skirted guitar-slinging young painter Emma Stacey and a local boy to save the day, and perhaps preserve their growing love. The film is described on the album jacket as a musical comedy, shot on location in the Sussex village of Lurgashall, during August 1969, which of course, doesn't begin to tell the tale. Think perhaps of the Kinks 'Village Green Preservation Society' characters come to life. See for yourself! For this is both the compact disc and PAL (all-region) version DVD debut of 'Tomorrow Come Someday' film and soundtrack, together at last in a double-disc set. Chunky booklet with plentiful photos gives the full story of what we like to call The Wonderful Musical World of Peter Howell & John Ferdinando. 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK

Released now as Jewel case CD. Modulo 1000 is one of Brasils famous progressive rock bands of the early 1970s, their only album frm1971 became legendary in the collectors scene, as one of the weirdest South American psych albums. The music is a synergy of British and American heavyrock (Black Sabbath, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin) and obscure Exotica, unique and catchy in its own way. As Luiz Simas (organ) remembers: "The music of Modulo 1000 had its own appeal to an audience that wanted a heavy, raw, experimental, psychedelic sound. Our kind of music did not make it to the radio stations. It was too wild. The distribution of the record was done in a very limited way. The record label directors, which probably didn't understand or even didn't like our music, did zero promotion for the LP." This 2nd CD-edition contains 8 bonustracks, same as the first edition, but now in jewel box format with 2 booklets a 6 page fold out of the stunning conceptual original cover artwork, plus an extra 12 p. booklet with, bio and lots of photos. Founded in 2008 NEUE AERA, first of all, was a "just for fun"- project. But very soon the musicians experienced that the old (and new) magic was (still) there and - like in the early seventies- Muck took over the leading role and composed new stuff without denying his roots of the "old" AERA-period, heavy influenced by a progressive jazz rock and hints of Arabian/ Oriental -sounds. Guitars all over, played with incredible power, heavenly melodies, terrific hook lines, pure strength, alive and kicking, lovely vocals, emotional violin interludes, superb flute and sax playing, all held together by a perfect playing rhythm section. NEUE AERAs album "AERABIAN" is open - minded and innovative, a logical continuation of AERAs early albums " Humanum Est" and "Hand und Fuss" , a real killer. 11 Tracks, playing about 65 minutes. Excellent and still fairly unknown LP on the same local CT label as D.R. Hooker. The bulk of it is terrific 1960s westcoast-flavored folkrock with a dreamy psych vibe and good vocal harmonies. I'm reminded of other 60s-in-the-70s trips such as Creme Soda or the good tracks on Spur more than anything else, with lyrics that show the retro feel to be deliberate on the band's part, openly referring to old songs by the Byrds, the Beatles, etc. Not sure what they were aiming for with this, but it does produce an appealing sound. Another reference point is Merrel Fankhauser in his melodic '66-67 phase. Opening track of random radio chatter is unfortunate and may have turned some buyers off, and there is a so-so Creedence ripoff on side 2, but apart from that -- meaning 8 tracks out of 10 -- this is a delight. Recommended to any fan of melodic 60s sounds, and not terribly hard to find 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK

PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, better known in English speaking countries as P.F.M., were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970 s and certainly one of the most well known. In 1974 the band toured the United States and Canada to great acclaim, recording material at concerts in Toronto and New York City. Unlike past efforts, the banned chose their native Brooklyn as backdrop for 'Flush'; tracking in Brooklyn's Treefort Studios and mixing/mastering in the city's SMT Studios, with producer Shane Stoneback and assistant producer Brian Herman. 'Flush' was documented in December of 2009 into the early weeks of 2010. Two years worth of pre-production constructed by founding members Zachary Hutton (vocals and guitars), and George P. Vasilopoulos (guitar and others) served as blueprints to the sessions. The abandoning of these blueprints in search of the spontaneous is what gives 'Flush' the feel of the banned: danger. As a result, 'Flush' is a cohesive body of music, whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Each track has both its own unique identity, and its own unique character amongst the others. Sung entirely in Swedish, a lot of the songs on "Disko" revolve around themes of collectivity & the salvation of something through destruction. The collaboration between Scott Cortez and Thisquietarmy doesn't really come as a surprise. The latter acknowledges that the previous works from Cortez (under the lovesliescrushing moniker) greatly influenced his work, to the point of using the same way of writing the band's name for his actual solo project. The main thing that they have in common is their unconventional use of the guitar, which they consider as a signal generator. They then process those sounds through various effects, to obtain a different result than that of the original signal until the source becomes almost undetectable. The original drone was supposed to be played like a three tones piece, with the use of a different string for each tone. They then sent the result to each other to work on the piece that the other had begun. This is how they recorded the two tracks that feature on this record. Written and pressed to be played at 45 rpm, the record can also be played at 33 rpm. Darker and more mystical, the result is stunning. Numbered edition of 499 copies. 		EXPERIMENTAL

K11 is the nom de plume of Italian sound artist Pietro Riparbelli. On his last release as K11, 2009's Voices from Thelema (Aurora Borealis) Riparbelli visited the ruins of Aleister Crowley's Thelema Abbey in Cefalu, Sicily, where he documented signals and sounds coming through short-wave radio receivers--an instrumental trans-communication ritual, acting as a conduit for whatever spirits remain in the Abbey. Continuing his interest in cathedrals with the new K11 release Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D., Riparbelli entered Assisi Cathedral in the Umbria region of Italy, not far from his hometown of Tuscany; the 1230 A.D. in the album's title refers to the date of completion of the original cathedral. Audio was recorded in the cathedral's lower basilica, the oldest area where the actual relics of St. Francis of Assisi are kept. Again utilizing short-wave radios as his primary "instrument," Riparbelli has captured a haunting array of cavernous sounds, displaced signals and found ambience. With the addition of some voice and organ elements, Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D. sounds not unlike the recordings of experimentalists Philip Jeck and William Basinski if they were under the influence of Crowleyean magick and sacred geometry--a psychedelic meditation from some medieval crypt captured out of time in the present. The numbers used in the song titles are chosen with purpose, all related to the Gematria, the ancient system that assigns numbers to words and how they relate to each other. A video shot inside the cathedral by Riparbelli is included on the disc to give the listener a visual picture of the aging structure. As in all K11's work, the themes of magick, religion, numerology and esotericism are present throughout this reverent document of aural mysticism. 		EXPERIMENTAL

'Witness' is Jex Thoth's fourth release following the 'Totem' EP. All releases have received an overwhelmingly positive reception from both fans and press alike. This EP contains three new songs: two original compositions and a cover song that fluidly flow into 15 minutes of mellow psychedelia and proto-doom metal with influences stemming from the 60s and 70s. 'Witness' is perhaps less guitar oriented than before, with the mood becoming more melancholy in the process; the music is heavy yet laid back and openly nostalgic without being sentimental or trite. The band's biggest strengths are the haunting vocals of Jex and avoiding the usual trap of carbon copying its predecessors. As such this MCD should appeal fans of pastoral, psychedelic rock/metal with a firm footing in the past but not necessarily dwelling there.
