It features the fabulous Simon House, (ex hawkwind/David Bowie violinist/keyboard player!) on violin, organ and mellotron. Isobel Morris provides her usual haunting vocals and wrote the lyrics for the song "Encounter". She also wrote the lyrics and sang on 2 songs on Alan's previous album "Human on the Outside". On the song "Too High", Louis Davey (Alan's nephew or his son maybe, heehee!!) does lead guitar and Xoo bass and keysman James Hodkinson plays organ and twists out FX on it too!! Old style special FX come curtesy of Josh Dreamspirit who provides audio generators on "Angel Down", Waste of Time" and "Alien Veto". 0340876 LP VMLP 145 VINYL MAGIC	DELIRIUM - DOLCE ACQUA Delirium came from Genova, from a previous beat band called I Sagittari, and formed in 1970, releasing their first single a year later. Canto di Osanna, presented at first Viareggio pop festival was a successful single and gave the band an immediate notoriety. They had also won a Radio Montecarlo rock contest in 1971. First album, Dolce acqua, also from 1971 contains a good and original mix of prog, jazz and some tuneful melodies, the leading role of singer Ivano Fossati is evident, with his furious flute soloing being one of the band's most distinctive elements. The album, housed in a nice triple gatefold cover, is structured in various movements like a classical suite, but here and there some parts seem a little incoherent with the whole LP. 0340875 LP VMLP 144 VINYL MAGIC	DELIRIUM - LO SCEMO E IL VILLAGGIO After their first album, Dolce Acqua, from 1971 and their memorable TV presence at Sanremo music festival gave around mid-1972 Ivano Fossati suddenly had to leave Delirium for his military service, later to pursue a solo career that's still successful today, even with a lighter (but always full of jazzy and ethnic influences) kind of music. His replacement was Englishman Martin Frederick Grice (from Boomerang) who, along with the ever present flute, was also a brilliant sax player. With this renewed line-up they released their second album, Lo scemo e il villaggio, still with some jazz influences and a stronger use of sax by the new member Grice, with the evident lack of a role singer in the band, all members taking the lead singer role. 0340850 2xCD HAWKS 7 5099960992925 EMI	HAWKWIND - AT THE BBC 1972 (2CD) Whilst the bulk of this double CD release is made up of the live set recorded for the BBC In Concert programme, it opens with a previously unreleased session recorded for Johnnie Walker featuring a shortened version of the Doremi Fasol Latido album classic Brainstorm and a version of the then hit single Silver Machine, featuring Lemmy on vocals as per the single. The In Concert itself, a hypnotic continuous performance, is presented in both mono and stereo versions. The mono version was previously released by Windsong on CD in 1991 and has been remastered and re-indexed to include all of the pieces originally performed, and the concert itself in its entirety. The stereo version has long been in the domain of the bootleggers as an off-air recording known the as "Broadcast" version. This mix was in fact distributed by the BBC for broadcast internationally and features an edited Brainstorm, missing approximately 4 minutes from the front of the song, a shorter Welcome To The Future and Electronic No. 1 (not indexed on the previous CD release), but a longer Countdown introduction. Officially released for the first time, apart from being in stereo, the sound quality is superior to the mono version and the mix is generally more exciting. CD1: 1. 0340881 CD ACLNCD 1013 0778578101329 LION/ACME	INFINITY - COLLECTED WORKS 1969-1970 Legendary UK psych outfit Infinity formed in 1969 from the ashes of 'Chocolate Soup' psych faves the Flies and Cymbaline. The mission: to develop a heavy psychedelic/pop sound, and express it through complex original songs. Thanks to some funky Hammond organ, punchy guitars, and the band's unique harmonies, Infinity were no run of the mill outfit. Upon their return to mainland England from a residency in Jersey, they joined the high-profile NEMS agency, alongside heavy hitters like Pink Floyd, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Soft Machine, and Pretty Things. In late 1969 and early 1970, following support slots with The Searchers and Marmalade, Infinity recorded original material for a proposed album, which was meant to explore time, space, matter, energy and chicken phal, said in some circles to be so hot in a culinary sense that it's temperature approached infinity, or so they have said, with tongue-in-cheek, we have to believe. Sadly, they broke up soon after the sessions. The good news is that the band left behind the recordings presented on this disc, which can now be enjoyed in the digital format after the passage of more than four decades! 0340928 CD ASP 39 8032644745391 A SILENT PLACE	JENNIFER GENTLE - CONCENTRIC Better known as purveyors of quirky, semi-sleazy avant pop gems on their Sub Pop albums, Jennifer Gentle and their leader Marco Fasolo have also issued through the years a series of weirder releases (mostly through Italian label A Silent Place) running the gamut from out-there psychedelic rock to "crunching and hefty slab of tripped out musique concrète worthy of Joji Yuasa, Kunihara Akayima or one of their equivalent early 60s greats", as Julian Cope eloquently put it reviewing JGs Sacramento Session/ 5 of 3 LP. 'Concentric' is the last one and also their bleakest, most uncompromising and probably best "experimental" album to date. This time Fasolo took his live band in his own Ectoplasmic Studio, recorded them and then spent hours painstakingly editing the material, adding here and there the odd effect and generally directing what sounds like a nightmarish surrealist movie perversely shot in lush Cinemascope - or a hellish version of Lumpy Gravy as played by a freaked-out jazz combo. If 2007 The Midnight Room combined 50s rock & roll with the more out-there approach of composers like Krysztof Komeda, 'Concentric' is a step further into controlled mayhem. Using only analogue recording techniques, Fasolo & co. sprayed hugely detailed canvas of sound that are best experienced at loud volume, carving a monstrous landscape reminiscent of Igor Wakhevich's luciferian visions, Coil's gothic oneirism or a particularly devilish Taj Mahal Travellers performance. After a couple of short, atmospheric introductory pieces, the album takes off with 'Neon', a gargantuan trip soaked in burbling synths and icy guitar figures, while in the backdrop an immense, almost early industrial beat plays incessantly. 'Scar' is a short, furious Jap noise blast, with Fasolo's guitar battling Paolo Mongardi's drums; 'Hunt' is a hysterical composition for piano (played with forks!), intricate drum parts and Liviano Mos' warbling electronic keyboards. Finally, 'Halos' is a Jodorowskyan ritualistic suite for scratched cymbals and morbid penny whistles that sounds like it was recorded in a labyrinthic dungeon. And the Lovecraftian, grotesquely unintelligible borborygms straight from the belly of the Beast that wrap up the record are probably the best possible seal for this arcane, unnerving journey. Recorded in '76, this private press LP came to be after Robert Lester Folsom went into a studio in Atlanta to record a demo for one song. The producer was so impressed with Folsom's tune that he encouraged him to come back and record more tracks, which resulted in Music and Dreams. Stylistically, it's straight outta the mellow gold school of '70s folk rock. CS&N, Todd Rundgren and Steve Miller are all good references, but there's also a mysterious vibe to the tunes (a la Merrell Fankhauser) and a healthy dose of yacht rock thrown in as well. Highlights include the lovely title track and the earnest ballad "Please Don't Forget Me." There's a lot of stylistic variety here, including a couple of jazzy instrumentals and a full on blast of Tom Petty-esque power pop ("Blues Stay Away"). All in all, Music and Dreams is a pretty solid and lovely album that'll appeal to fans of the aforementioned. But lets take a step back before this band and here we are with Serpents Knight featuring the very well respected and well-known, Warrel Dane. This was the very first heavy metal band he was in. The band was never able to make a proper recording of the songs, just tried to do the best they could with home recording equipment. So keep in mind the music was saved on tapes after all these years and then re-mastered by Brad Poland himself in 2009. The music on these old tapes was very well written, dark, and featured some insanely high pitched vocals. Its a long story (which you will read in the CD booklet) but the band split up, Warrel went on to do Sanctuary and the rest was history. In the late 80s Brad was able to find a new singer and wanted to make another album, so they did and in this package youll get both albums in a double CD set. This record brings together two of the most distinctive bands to arise from the emergent lo-fi scene. Printed on blue vinyl, the split 7" is limited to just 500 hand-numbered copies, with unmistakable artwork from Male Bonding drummer, Robin Silas. On the A side are Fair Ohs, a three piece from East London, chasing endless summers hidden in stolen African rhythms, half-inched Indian ragas and tea leafed Brazilian tropicalia. Renowned for enjoying the comfort of shorts, not wearing shoes and being habitual liars, Fair Ohs turn one cheek to the darkness, while the other glares straight into it. This is undoubtedly sunshine pop, albeit with a slightly twisted core. Starting out with a penchant for fast in-the-red 60s garage punk tunes released on a series of tapes in mid-2009, Fair Ohs have since dropped the sun-bomb and kicked out a host of tropical punk jams on labels Sex Is Disgusting, Suplex and Paradise Vendors Inc. Their appearance on the split represents the next step in their evolution from hardcore kids to benga beat bros. Recorded with the rightly ubiquitous Rory Brattwell, "Hey Lizzy" and "Himalayas" sees Fair Ohs staving off the winter cold with dreams of eternal sunsets and shoreline drives. Spectrals, the brainchild of L; a stand-up guy from a small town near a few bigger ones in the top half of the UK. With a heart firmly wrapped up in doo wop, girl groups and not a little tape hiss fuzz, Spectrals is a one-man teen dream with Rat Pack flair and a punk rock eye. When not getting upset over people talking about his band on the internet, Spectrals has been known to enjoy Red Bird & Cash Money Records, "Slush" based beverages, writing to Phil Spector in prison, and NYHC in the 1980s. Spectrals short life span has seen him share a stage with the likes of Sic Alps, Wavves, Lovvers and Real Estate, backed by a band of unsavoury individuals. With album Bad Penny in the can and slated for release later this year, "Birthday Kiss" and "Keep Your Magic Out Of My House" are his first UK releases of the year, showcasing a beautifully hazy mix of lovelorn slow jams and spidery Will Sergeant-like guitar lines.

He updated the French chanson and made it hip again, infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s: one that was ruled by jazz, drugs and free love. The music of Gainsbourg heralded in this new era and his earliest songs became the soundtrack for a generation of Parisian youths. Side A features songs that originally appeared in 1959 on his second album (here in stereo), "No. 2". Here Gainsbourg fronts the Alain Goraguer et Son Orchestre on songs like "Le Claqueur de Doigts", a song about seducing chicks at a jukebox....a standard operating tactic for Gainsbourg! While side B features material from his 1958 debut, "Du Chant a la Lune!", which featured early hits like "Le Poinonneur Des Lilas" the morbid tale of a Paris Metro ticket man who contemplates suicide to free him from the monotony of his life. Tracks 1-3 on side B were recorded live at the "Theatre des 3 Baudets" in November, 1958, while tracks 8-10 are taken from Gainsbourg's score for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's 1960 film "L'Eau a la Bouche" (A Game for Six Lovers). While it has always been somewhat difficult for English audiences to appreciate Gainsbourg, due to the language barrier that keeps us from fulling appreciating the sharp wit and raunchy innuendos that permeate his brilliant lyrical style, I find that if I allow the music to carry me to the world of 1960s Parisian vice, my imagination can fill in the rest! First contact came about some initially anonymous disptach-coincidence at the end of 2006. But before the grapes of (factual) collaboration get thrown under the feet of the listenership, the split-concipated single "Sanddorn" ("sea buckthorn") presents the current motives of the two artists as short essences filtered through the tea strainer, as seaweed, as negigibly stroke of the brush on remaining cardboard. The N-side features some bucolic farsightednesses over a nearly pastoral landscape. Here and there a bird stops in the sky, so that the listener can cull it slow-handed from the firmament. The feet get lined by milky spume. When one has a look beneath this round it gets apparently detected by the nose (Uhlig's side): Dull tones out of a musty old building's cellar on which lays the mantle of mildew in fast motion. He made rhizomatic structures with scrap iron ("Gerümpelplastiken"), but soon proceeded to the "Aktion" in the vein of the New York Happenings. Gradually, Muehl began to distance himself from "Aktion". He regarded the "happening as a bourgeois artform, mere art". The work of the Berlin-based composer Andrew Pekler has been been documented in various releases for labels such as Scape, Staubgold and Kranky. When asked by Giuseppe Ielasi for some material to be released on Schoolmap Records, Pekler immediately considered the possibility of taking the many unused music fragments that had been collecting cyber-dust on various hard drives and bringing them into some kind of order. Raw sketches, orphaned sounds, finished pieces for abandoned projects, music for theater and dance, even a few completed tracks that did not fit onto earlier releases - these are the component parts of "Entanglements In An Orthopedic Sensorium"". The re-mastered album is composed of a single long rack based on a performance at Action Space in London, 1st of April 1977. The performance, reported to be the first and possibly the last of this trio, was recorded by David Toop and was created with a variety of music instruments and sound producing devices including different kind of flutes, trumpets, whistles, panpipes, drums, cymbals, fiddles, respiratory and vocal sounds, body percussion. Described by Musics' critic Peter Riley as a prime example of 'slow music' (music that shows slowness in its reception, conception and execution) 'Cholagogues', musically speaking, is a very unique affair: alternating ritualistic sparseness with denser moments, mixing hints from various non-European music styles with a minimalist economy of means and a overall sense of playfulness, the record is a lost gem of European improvisation and anticipates not only different styles of experimental music but also some weird rock to come. Audiofilm II is the second installment in the Crucial Blast series of limited-edition 3-inch CDs from SCOTT HULL. Best known for his amazing thrash / grind riffage in the bands PIG DESTROYER and AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, Hull has gradually revealed another side of his musical persona over the past few years: cinematic soundscaping and darkly evocative film scores, mutant electronic textures, and pitch-black isolationism that employs brilliant production trickery to immerse the listener in a vibrantly active aural environment. Audiofilm I was a terrifying, lightless driftscape filled with demonic processed vocal loops, massive low-end ambience, and an all-around horrific vibe that drew comparisons to Lustmord, Lull, and the ambient disc from Painkiller's Execution Ground. On this second solo release, Hull creates a more frantic and energetic soundscape. Audiofilm II is alive with minimal bass-shuddering pulses and keening tone manipulations, layered swarms of insectile electronic cha tter, swells of shadowy ambience, a couple of well-timed brain-melting plasma blasts, and vast tectonic drones. Clocking in at twelve minutes, it is a brief but amazing dose of abstract ambient/noise that will appeal to fans of Bastard Noise, the Japanese cosmic-tronix of Astro, and freaked-out '70s sci-fi synth soundtracks. Not only was the film genre defining, but so was the soundtrack by Miles Davis, propelling the young player and composer forward into the type of modal jazz that would soon make history. Amazingly a 24-year-old Malle, who had not yet made a feature length film, but who was a huge jazz fan, intercepted Miles Davis at the airport and managed to convince him to make the music for the film. Miles Davis and his musicians, who included the Kenny Clarke on drums, as well as three French musicians, improvised this soundtrack in one night, from dusk to dawn, while watching the film and occasionally consulting with Malle. The film, which can be considered a precursor to the New Wave of French cinema won Malle the prestigious Louis Delluc prize and it can also be stated that the very spirit of jazz and the New Wave of French cinema are contained in this film and its soundtrack. In both places the local population was trying to gain independence from British colonialism. Although colonialism is never a good thing, there are always some positive outcomes when two cultures collide, especially when it comes to music. The Zulu of South Africa are the largest ethnic group in the country and are well known for their rich musical traditions. In the 1940s, however, Zulu musicians began fusing traditional Zulu choral music (often sung by migrant mine workers), like Mbube and Isicathamiya, with the instruments and rhythms of Western jazz. A continent away in India, we see that the same kind of musical revolution was taking place during this same period. Calcutta in particular became a musical hotbed beginning in WWII, when it became one of the major ports for the South East Asian Theatre of the War. The jazz scene was mainly centred on the house bands from the various luxury hotels and British social clubs, with these bands often recording for the South East Asian division of E.M.I. Interestingly, one of the hottest stars on this scene during the 1940s was Teddy Weatherford, an African American expat from the Chicago jazz scene. Beginning in 1942, following the Japanese invasion of Burma (Myanmar), hundreds of thousands of refugees poured into India, among these great jazz musicians like Reuben Solomon (of Iraqi Jewish descent) of The Rangoon Gymkhana Club fame. Batuk Nandy, on the other hand, was a well-known steel guitar player who rose to fame by making "filmi" music for Bollywood films, while Bismillah Khan was an Indian shehnai (a traditional flute-like instrument) master, and one of only three classical musicians to have ever won the Bharat Ratna prize, the highest civilian prize in India. Khan was also one of the few musicians to perform at Delhi's Red Fort in 1947 for India's Independence celebrations. Despite the obvious negative outcomes, different cultures and religions forced together in the face of economic and political adversity has historically been a recipe for great music, and as this album testifies, India and South Africa were no different. McLuhan was a concept and a mixed-media group where no particular musical venue or style would necessarily prevail. The creator of the idea was David Wright who composed most of the music and wrote the lyrics on their only album, Anomaly. Paul Cohn was a friend and fellow-student of David Wright at UICC (University of Illinois Chicago). He was also a sax, flute and clarinetist in a week-end prom group called the Seven Seas. When the band lost their trumpetist he asked his friend who he knew could play, to fill in. Soon after the group had a falling apart thing with the singer and guitar player who had big plans and wanted to be stars etc... Recorded in Memphis and Wisconsin in 1928 and 1929, these 17 tracks represent Johnson's complete recorded works from 1928 and 1929, and capture Johnson in his prime, when his talents were so great that when he told fans he'd made a pact with the devil... it was difficult not to believe him! Unfortunately Johnson's love for music was only surpassed by his love for "canned heat" (large quantities of alcohol, in any form he could get it, including Sterno!). In fact, his "Canned Heat Blues" is one of his better known songs (even lending its name to the well-known sixties blues band), along with "Cool Drink of Water Blues" (famously covered by Howlin' Wolf as "I Asked For Water (She Brought Me Gasoline) "). Rumba to RocknRoll and Beyond : Latin rhythms have infiltrated into every new branch of popular music that has emerged during the twentieth century. Jelly Roll Morton and W.C. Handy incorporated the Cuban habanera into early jazz and blues; the Argentinean tango found its way into twenties dance-band music; the Brazilian baion and bossanova styles wound their way through the sixties beat boom and were revived in the drumnbass of the nineties. But none had such an all-pervasive influence as the rumba. Its journey from the Middle-East through North Africa and Spain to the New World brought it into American dance halls in the thirties. The syncopated, rhythmic riffs of bandleaders such as Xavier Cugat helped to liberate dancers from stuffy foxtrots and waltzes, opening up an altogether more sensual world of excitement and exoticism. In post-war popular music, rumba is everywhere, from Dave Bartholomews Country Boy to the Clashs Rock The Casbah, picking up Little Richards Slippin and Slidin and the Beatles Ballad Of John And Yoko along the way. Even hillbilly records featured rumba bass lines. Its 3-2 clave rhythm, which Bo Diddley stylised and made into his very own, became an integral part of American music and continues to cast its spell over popular music to the current day. Having built its reputation on releasing long-forgotten gems from 70s Africa, especially Benin (including two releases by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou), Analog Africa is moving its focus to another continent altogether for release number 7: "Mambo Loco" is a compilation of tracks by Anibal Velasquez, the legendary accordionist from Barranquilla in Colombia. In fact, when not crate-digging in Africa, Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb can often be found in Colombia. In the summer of 1952 Anibal Velasquez walked into the studios of Discos Atlantic for his first recording session.
