Limited edition of 500 copies. The 1st new track by Blood Axis after many years! Here sharing a 7" with the British folk singer and song writer Andrew King. The overall theme of this release is the prose of the German middle-ages. Blood Axis interprets a "Minnelied" by Walther von der Vogelweide, living in the 12th/13th century and proposed to be the most important German speaking poet of that time. Andrew King interprets a song by Oswald von Wolkenstein, living during the same period, who stands as the an example of a knight. The specialty on both tracks is that both interpreters are singing the songs in the original language: "Mittelhochdeutsch", the language of the literature of that time, spoken during the time of the Staufer emperors. It is quite interesting to hear how good both interpreters are able to pronounce this difficult old language and how well their own music fits to those lyrics. An outstanding release that shows that it is possibile to work with tradition in an educating entertaining way. |

He's certainly Nigeria's most famous musical export. In Nigeria, his countrymen knew his music like Americans know Elvis. On foreign shores, a chosen few Westerners could claim to know the extent of Fela's genius. As a result, while music historians have filled books with references to the influence of Westerners on Fela's creation, little has been said about Fela's inspiration on others. Thus, our compilation begins. Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbia's base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Fela's fury in the new millennium. Acid Witch plays a very trippy, psychedelic and unsurprisingly horror influenced form of doom metal. Yet its delivered with such unabashed childishness and goofiness, a possible result of what the Scoody Doo cartoon theme would sound like if Electric Wizard had penned it. You'l find elements of Cathedral here, some Witchfinder General there, and some slight nods to Pentagram. Add to that some of Electric Wizard's ultra bassy, fuzzy, and distorted guitar tone and booming production values. Like other traditional doom metal albums, the riffs and rhythm patterns move in a lumbering and lurching fashion yet somehow the Witchsters inject some nice doses of sensual grooves that recall 70's Deep Purple. During various listening sessions I felt like I was inside Satan smoke filled strip club watching strippers complete with horns and cloven hooves gyrating their lovely tail clad asses for the merriment of us sinners and then suddenly I somehow realized that perhaps hell isn't really a bad place after all. |

Ten Glorious Animals is Alice Donut's triumphant return to Alternative Tentacles. Formed in 1986, the band spent a decade touring relentlessly throughout North America, Europe, and Japan, building a perversely loyal following. Formed 1978 in New York, Circle X was born out of the ashes of No Fun and the I-Holes as Louisvilles first punk rock band. Once the lineup of Circle X solidified, the formerly-punk band lunged headfirst into weirder, artier territory. Whether the big citys burgeoning No Wave scene influenced Circle X or they influenced the scene is unclear; what is clear, though, is that Circle X was the most unique, most mysterious, and most un-heralded band hailing from that place and time. In France for nine months with new manager Bernard Zekri, Circle X toured from their base in Dijon, garnering strong press and stronger public reaction while writing new material as they went. An untitled four-song EP saw the light of day in 1979. That untitled 12-inch debut was practically without antecedent. Its a lurching, squalling monster. Identified only by a symbol on the cover (a spray-painted circle with an "X" through it; the spelled-out name first appeared in '83), it pits Pinotti's screeched vocals against Witsiepe and the Letendres' bass-less, barely contained distorto-blare. The hatred and rage on this thing is palpable and when it coalesces perfectly with the music, as it does on the lead track, Tender, its pretty damn effective. Nothing sounded like this in 1979. They arrived in New York at the tail end of No Wave, at the same time that equally ornery bands like Swans and Sonic Youth were getting revved up. Circle X are every bit as distinctive and attitudinal as Throbbing Gristle, PiL, Theoretical Girls, DNA, or Mars, yet they don't much sound like any of them. We proudly represent this masterpiece after thirty years again for the public. It has lost none of its intensity and rage. Limited to 500 copies, its on 180 gram vinyl in tip-on jackets that bear the original artwork and poly lined black inner sleeve plus liner notes. |

The MONKS OF MALASPINA debut release is a phantastical psychedelic mystery musical filled with dark woods wonder and honey comb clouds over sparkling fjords from deep within the mountains of Canada's British Columbia. Highway 101 ends here, or like this new record, begins. Members of the band call up roots from First Nation relations with Jesuit missionaries co-mingled with a diverse offspring from a free love commune started in the 1970's. Most of the music on this record is gloriously strange with a capella outbursts both finely tuned and guttural. Decomposing abstract rock anthems stretch out alongside primitive beat-boxing. There are more familiar sounding songs as well giving the whole album an aura of storytelling magic, like it is all based on some fabulous old book. M.O.M. was produced and arranged by Theo Angell who lead the group into some pretty tripped out improvisations. Quotes Theo: "The film, I mean the album, is like an abstract musical of sorts. There are some lyric-less 'soungs' where Raven meets Hanuman for instance and they tangle in an epic battle in the sky. Or the one where they try to conjure up the feeling of a month of rain in their mind. The world of the Monks is populated by a drinking man-beast who is missing a foot and a bear who ravishes the garden and fruit trees of the Cryptic Master and the Kinetic Gardener of Ronanda. Some of the songs address particular members of the band, "Forthwith Lorraine" for instance. "Taking Off Your Feet" is a re-occuring theme, by which they mean trippin' the way out or getting seriously unsettled. They've really come up with their own syntax and insider myths where even the humor is mystical in nature. They're an odd group of C.O.P.s (children of hippies) with very little outside references. I played this for someone and they said it reminded them of the Holy Modal Rounder's 'Moray Eel' album. Besides using their voices they also play the autoharp and guitars, as well as "the staff". I tried to get them to play a live show but they insist on recording the sequel first. We'll see. I told them they were Fjord Folk." The Monks of Malaspina are Sofar Lorraine, Pournt Falster, Freel Bequelle, Frist Clupps and Thlowlth Fissure. The album was engineered by Dreetmont Accel with mastering by Josh Stevenson. |

Honeysuckle Tendrals is a lost recording. It resides within a canon of musical output by a singer/songwriter no one has heard of, from a place that the world has almost entirely written off. Recorded in 1999 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Honeysuckle Tendrals was CARL SIMMONS second effort at a full-length recording. He released it into the world in a miniscule edition of cassette tapes on his own Unconscious Piano Productions imprint. To say it was poorly distributed is an understatement. It was handed out to friends, and perhaps sold at various open mic nights, where he would sometimes pass off his own songs as Bob Dylan tunes to an unsuspecting audience. Incorporating numerous collage elements-and very few guitar strings-Honeysuckle Tendrals weaves in and out of song in a spacey wash of psychedelic imagery by way of nursery rhymes and fairytales. Owing influence to writers like Lewis Carroll, and filmmakers like Herzog and Lynch, as much as any musical influence, Carl's music can have something of a cinematic feel. Though perhaps best classified under the floppy umbrella of "Outsider" music, Honeysuckle Tendrals displays remarkably complex arrangements utilizing a staggeringly simple arsenal of instruments: a broken guitar, sound collage, and heavily layered vocal tracks filtered through an array of effects. The LP is an edited and slightly resequenced presentation; carefully curated, remastered for vinyl, and housed in a handmade jacket in the Folkways tradition. It includes a bonus 7-inch EP, including two alternate takes from the LP and two outstanding, and completely exclusive non-album tracks. |

AHC leader and chief protagonist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah was born and raised in a Rasta community in the Jamaican hills, and after many years of international travel, in the mid-90s he followed the Rasta dream and relocated to Africa, making his home in Ghana. Returning to London to rehearse for some live shows with Asian Dub Foundation, he teamed up again with longtime collaborator Adrian Sherwood, and Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa is the remarkable result. ALLSEITS is the solo project of the German instrumentalist Nina Kernicke known from her recent collaboration with German drone pioneers Troum of which Nina has also been a recent live member of and her work under her other alias, ALLSIDES. The album "Hel" describes the way into the underworld, the listener is guided through various stages on the journey down to Hel, the Norse mythological term for hell and also for the goddess Hel who is said to keep watch over the underworld. The journey begins at the foot of Yggdrasil, the world tree, under which the entry to Hel is hidden. We then ride the river Gjöll, that flows along the human world before it runs down to Hel. Gjöll is is spanned by the bridge Gjallarbrù which is guarded by Modgudr, a female giant, who decides who can pass the bridge. Leaving Gjallarbrù behind, the large dog Garm that sentinels the gate to Hel is waiting and at his side sits Fjalar, a rooster that will crow to signify the beginning of Ragnarok, the end of the world. After passing Fjalar Hel is finally reached. This allegoric tale is expressed diligently by Kernicke with the use of guitar, bass, drums and skillful sampling creating thick drony layers of deep and solemn emotions. Arnold first arrived in the UK with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in 1966 and the young American backing singer so enjoyed her visit that she decided to stay on and launch a solo career. She was signed to Andrew Oldhams Immediate Records and the result was a series of superb recordings, now presented on this Repertoire CD compilation. P.P. Arnold is blessed with a powerful and soulful voice, well suited to interpreting dramatic songs. A great example is her treatment of The First Cut Is The Deepest by Cat Stevens - among eight tracks culled from the A and B-sides of singles released during 1967. A further three items are taken from her debut album The First Lady Of Immediate. During this productive period, fellow Immediate artists the Small Faces and Twice As Much supplied much suitable material and Pat wrote some original songs as well as delving into the songbooks of the Beatles and the Beach Boys for Eleanor Rigby and God Only Knows. The remaining eight tracks are taken from her second album Kafunta, released in 1968. CHATHAM, RHYS - THE BERN PROJECT
In the summer of 2008 Rhys Chatham visited Bern for a Guitar Trio performance together with local musicians that the club had recruited for him. They rehearsed during the day and played a fabulous show that night. Rhys was blown away by the skills of the drummer and bass player and talked about plans to form a trio - half a year later he was back in Bern and introduced Julian Sartorius (drums) and Mago Flueck (bass) to new compositions he brought along. Beat Unternährer on trombone joined as guest musician. Reto Mäder (RM74, Sum Of R, Ural Umbo) recorded many hours of these sessions on a multi-track machine. Over the next few months, Mäder listened to the recordings, separated the wheat from the chaff, selected the best parts and made pre-mixes. After more than 100 hours of work, a brand new Rhys Chatham album was finally mixed and mastered. The result is an album of new Rhys Chatham tracks with this band - something you haven't heard since the Die Donnergötter recordings of the 80s. |

The "Transparence" dubplate, developed at O' in Milan, Italy, works within the physical limitations of the vinyl medium, employing the object as sound source and also sound medium, to become an instrument in its own right. Using the non-linear acoustics of the gallery at O', the dubplate was recorded, and later cut to disc in Berlin, at very low volume. This ephemeral audio signal becomes present during playback only at high volume, which subsequently produces, by design, a unique physical response from the room, air and amplification - creating deep undertones and blossoming overtones via these manifold resonances; simultaneously, the action of the stylus gently abraids the soft vinyl surface, causing the dubplate's sound to gradually disappear and evolve, successively losing higher frequencies whilst acquiring new artefacts and crackle. OLTRE documents this degradation and transformation over two months of live performances. The integrated system of subsonic feedback from ventilators, acoustically gated binaural microphones, modal micro-variations in guitar feedback, field-recordings from across remote areas of Australia and the live, physical interplay of the turntable, dubplate and stylus, combine to create a field which moves beyond the original recordings and their individual spaces. |

The long-awaited,long-whispered Magickal Folk album has finally arrived. People have been asking for a reissue for a long time and are being rewarded with a double CD. "The Mildew Leaf" and "The Cat's Melodeon" CDRs have long been out of print. Along with a track from the Gold Leaf Branches comp they make up Disc One. Disc Two is all new recordings, further exploring the Peter Kennedy songbook and beyond. We thank for your patience and are delighted to present this collection of songs to you. The Magickal Folk Of The Faraway Tree began when David Colohan (Agitated Radio Pilot, United Bible Studies) got his hands on a copy of Peter Kennedy's classic collection "Folksongs of Britain and Ireland". Along with Shane Cullinane (The Cosmic Nanou, United Bible Studies) he began to pick songs to work on. Disregarding the sheet music they simply wrote their own music for the traditional lyrics. Other songs such as Spencer The Rover and Donal Og were learned from recordings and heard in sessions and are more faithfully recorded. The newer recordings on disc two are augmented by original instrumentals in the old style. The actor Caroline Coffey (also heard on The Jonah by UBS) provides the sole female voice, sometimes a gentle ghostly whisper, other times a more like a banshee. She is also a more full-bodied presence on rousing songs such as Here's A Health To All True Lovers. Inevitably other members of United Bible Studies contributed; Gavin Prior, Scott McLaughlin and Sean Og who plays flute. While United Bible Studies and Agitated Radio Pilot are at the modern/progressive end of the folk contimuum, The Magickal Folk Of The Faraway Tree take a traditional approach, sticking to acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, purists may be perplexed when confronted with completely new melodies after perusing the familiar titles. Those who have never heard the 'originals' would have no reason to suspect the melodies were written in the 21st century. Therein lies the strength of this double album; Imagination and energy are brought to old songs but with a love of of the tradition evident at all times. |

Serpent Throne hails from the city of brotherly love (Philadelphia) and includes at least one member of the now defunct Otesanek. The band plays a brand of hard rock that harkens back to the golden age of heavy riffs and tasty solos called the 70's. This self released album is chuck full of catchy heavy riffs and sweet soulful leads. The guitar duo of Fenton and Argott is really the highlight on the album and they deliver the goods in spades. I've not heard such heartfelt and soulful guitar playing since...well, the seventies. The band's rhythm section are no slouches either and hold it down with just the right pomp and swagger. A bad vocalist could ruin this band so I'm actually kind of grateful that there are no vocals. One thing I appreciate is that the sound of the recording is not retro per se. It does have an analog, warm and fuzzy vibe but does not have that deliberately sought after vintage tone. |

He's best known by his first name, Fela. He's certainly Nigerias most famous musical export. His name itself conjures images of 70s Lagos: a metropolis awash in the jubilation that swept in after the 1970 armistice in the civil war between the Nigerian Army and Eastern Biafran secessionists, a capital city in the midst of transition. This is the environment in which Fela and his Africa 70 popularized the hybrid of highlife, jazz and James Brown style, big-band funk he invented: Afro-Beat. In Nigeria, his countrymen knew his music like Americans know Elvis. On foreign shores, a chosen few Westerners could claim to know the extent of Felas genius. As a result, while music historians have filled books with references to the influence of Westerners on Felas creation, little has been said about Felas inspiration on others. Thus, our compilation begins. Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired - whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbias base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Felas fury in the new millennium. This is but a cursory investigation into those inspired by Fela Kuti's genius, but it is unique: the first time that many of these tracks are not only offered a second chance for worthy introspection, but, in the case of many, the first time they're being issued full stop. Compiler Egon has written extensive liner notes - and sourced never before seen Fela photos and other ephemera - for this project, included in the hardbound book that contains the CD. |
