But thats not all! As an extra bonus, we are also add the story of Harald Harfaste and Hassan-i Sabbah. This triple combo of songs can illuminate the darkest corners of the winter. 0338896 LP ATL 40299 GL RECORDS	BRAVE NEW WORLD - IMPRESSIONS ON READING ALDOUS... ...Huxley". This band emerged from Hamburg and lasted only a few years. It included a mixture of local musicians and two "foreigners". The German musicians were Reinhart Firchow (recorders, flutes, ocarina, stylophone, percussion, vocals), Lucas Lindholm (bass, bass fiddle, organ, piano), Dicky Tarrach (drums, percussion), Herb Geller (flutes, cor anglais, alto/soprano/tenor saxes, organ), the Irishman John O'Brien-Docker (guitars, organ, percussion, vocals, wind chimes) and Esther Daniels (vocals). As you can tell from the name of the band and one album title, their coming together was to make their instrumental interpretation of Aldous Huxley's novel - A Brave New World. Being almost entirely an instrumental band (apart from some occasional voices) they created a most unique sound which combined together successfully different styles such as folk, psychedelic rock and electronics. Their use of wind instruments (woodwinds), peculiar percussion patterns, flute, saxophones and a stylopohone gives their music a special otherworldly sound. A possible sound-alike would be Annexus Quam (in the psychedelic rock approach) and Between (in the ethereal, atmospheric sound). Sadly, after they released Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley in 1972 and then dissolved. It is commonly referred to as an essential album in any krautrock album collection. The result is this album, a child begotten of Marc Bolan, Baudelaire, and Lautramont; a fascinating record, subtle and engaging as it is scarce; the re-creation of a parallel pop universe which one Michael Moorcock wouldn't have renounced. Somehow, the duo get their record out into the world on Monde Melody's one-off 'Silk' imprint (a tribute to Marc Bolan). And what twisted songs (in English) they managed to squeeze into a fifty-minute slab of vinyl. The music drips with deep nostalgia for the decadent 'beautiful people' who lived and breathed and then found a home in the songs of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, pervaded throughout with a kind of psychedelic sadness. All of this is expressed by means of long jagged acid guitar runs (or in acoustic strums) supported by Moroccan percussion (bongos) and heavy bass lines from Christophe J. A post-quaalude album, as band leader Jay Alanski has said. If the LP had been released in 1971, everyone would point to T-Rex as an influence, and call it 'glam folk'; fast forward to today and it's hard not to think 'loner' and draw comparisons with the music of Devendra Banhart, albeit recorded 35 years ago! We're now several decades further on in the world's slow self-destruction, but this sole recording by the Beautiful Losers has lost nothing of its freshness and superb arrogance. He spent much of the following decade writing, rehearsing, and occasionally performing-all with no contract or record company support. In recent years, reissues of his now-sought-after original albums along with a pair of releases containing previously unreleased material have renewed interest in the English artist. Coptic Cat is pleased to announce the release of Fay's long-awaited next collection of old and new music. Still Some Light consists of 43 songs on two CD with a total playing time of over two hours. It comes in a full-color six-panel digipak with a 24-page booklet of extensive notes, archival photos, and handwritten lyrics to all the tracks. The cover was painted by the musician's brother JOHN FAY. Joey Smith decided that as he could he handle himself admirably on drums, it was time to challenge a new instrument so he bought a synthesizer. Drafting in friend Mike Hanopol to take over the bass-playing duties from the departed Masayoshi "Glue" Kabe, Smith managed to produce an album of two halves, the first being some of the strongest SGS-esque material ever, the second being some fine electronic instrumentals in the Tangerine Dream mode. Following the release of the album Smith and Hanopol flew back to Manila to become Filipino superstars, while Shinki eschewed the recording of his music in preference to live recordings and Kabe found alternative employment in the highly popular band, Pink Cloud. In 1989 Abshire left the band and was replaced by GREG MCCAUGHEY, and soon after the group's debut album If This Isn't A Dream was released on Alchemy Records (Melvins, Neurosis, RKL, Poison Idea, etc.). Shortly after the album's release, Alchemy folded, the album was lost in obscurity, and the Virulence disbanded (re-forming later with a different vocalist as FU MANCHU). Manchester International Festival of Music commissioned it, for their festival in July 2009. Vini had already composed pieces for Tony to listen to whilst he was ill in hospital and it was from here that the project developed. Near the beginning of the final night of the Durutti Column's 70-minute international festival tribute to Tony Wilson, A Paean to Wilson, guitarist Vini Reilly announced that he wouldn't be singing: "So you won't have to put up with my awful voice and schoolboy lyrics." If Wilson was with us, he would have chuckled. The Granada presenter-turned-Factory Records boss spent years urging his first signing to stop singing, and concentrate on the virtuosity that led Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante to call Reilly "the greatest guitarist in the world". Two years after his death, Wilson got his way, one of many lovely touches in a very personal, emotional and often warmly funny musical tribute. Wilson signed Joy Division and Happy Mondays, yet never gave up on this cult band he adored, working with them even after his legendary label went bankrupt. A complex man, Wilson was an academic thinker who revelled in Steve Coogan's affectionate, Alan Partridge-style send-up of him as a "twat". And this tribute was no different. At one point, Reilly - known for melancholy - launched into something resembling an Irish jig. "Tony loved to laugh," he explained. "He loved absurdities." After the humour came exquisitely mournful music. With Reilly and drummer Bruce Mitchell augmented by bass, keyboard, violin, electric piano, drum machine and trumpet, the band's beautiful pieces reflected Wilson's love of rock and classical. Reilly's plangent guitar work showed grief's emotional spectrum, from sadness to overdriven anger. As in life, Wilson had the last word, his recorded voice expounding thoughts on socialism with an eerie echo. Silence followed as Manchester pondered the loss of one of its truly larger-than-life characters. Then everybody cheered. The bonus disc first appeared in 2005 via Wilson's project F4, as being the fourth version of Factory Records. Originally it was download-only release, Heaven Sent (It Was Called Digital, It Was Heaven Sent). This is the first time that it has appeared on a physical format. It was a six track CD of personal dedications by Vini ironically the last piece being Anthony. Having been friends for a few years and both rolling solo, we decided to ride together and it was over the course of a couple of all day drives that we came up with the idea to do a split 7-inch, and to do one that was more than just one song by each of us. I think we both gravitated towards doing a murder ballad pretty quickly once we decided to try and make the two sides link up in some way. Once we decided on a murder ballad, we quickly came up with the idea that it would be a love triangle with it unclear which one of us murdered her. I think it was a few days later, we thought of having the chorus of each song be the same, tied around the woman's name. The name Julianne worked for both of us on a personal level and it's a good name to sing. The 7-inch features two sides of a love triangle/murder ballad. Sam's song is from the viewpoint of the husband who is being hung for the murder of his wife, Will's (Wayword Sons) side is from the viewpoint of the lover who is on the run thinking that he's been blamed for it. Giuseppe Chiari was one of the leading names associated first with Fluxus (being the only Italian member of the interdisciplinary art group since 1962) and later with Conceptual and Performance Art as well as Sound art. Coming from a background of different disciplines, he established new theoretical and practical standpoints in relation to music and art: his approach was always irreverent, walking the tightrope between to do or not to do, to say or not to say, while continually challenging the limits of language. The Die Schachtel vinyl LP (titled +/-) feature some of his previously unreleased and most intense pieces for piano, the musical instrument par excellence and emblem of conformist sound with which Giuseppe Chiari has a love-hate relationship, bestowing on it equal measures of ridicule and praise. It is also an amazing document of his last concert, with Frederic Rzewski (playing the 1964 groundbreaking piece "La Strada"), Giancarlo Cardini, Daniele Lombardi and Giuseppe Chiari himself. Oscillating in filigree nuances, the modulation of a drone that seems to last an eternity alone indicates that the sense of real time has been canceled-while, at the same time, another acoustic track surfaces like a distant memory, only to disappear again. A universe of sound particles spreads out, in which the sounds provide no references to a possible location. What the ear might consider to be the crunching sound of snow crusts, the deep droning of ice breaking, the scraping of migrating glaciers is often merely an acoustic hallucination, while actually the sounds have been composed using the finest of sound particles, which Archetti's ear has taken from completely different sources, such as the hum of generators, or the white noise of a blank video tape being played, or drone sounds created with the E-bow, which he extracts from his electric guitar (often with scordatura tuning). Now recording with a band that included harmonica virtuoso Little Walter Jacobs, the legendary Willie Dixon on double bass, and Jimmy Rogers on second guitar (all immense talents in their own right), Waters could do no wrong. In addition to penning much of his own material (including 1955s "Mannish Boy", a scathing response to Bo Diddleys "Im A Man"), Waters enlisted the songwriting talent of Dixon as well, who churned out one soon-to-be blues standard after another (i.e. "Im Ready", "I Love The Life I Live, I Live the Life I Love", "Young Fashioned Ways", "Close To You", etc.).
