0337973 LP LPS 19 WAH WAH	IA-BATISTE - UN GRAN DIA (+7") Key duo from the catalan folk rock scene, joint venture of Ia Clua (from Dos + Un) and Jordi Batiste (one of the leading forces of Maquina!), after the later ones return from military service. Un Gran Dia, the duo's first album, was recorded at the end of 1972 with the help of such outstanding musicians as Manel Joseph (ex Dos + Un, Ia's early band), Joaquin "Max" Suner (Vértice, Tapiman, Iceberg a.o.) & Albert Batiste (Musica Dispersa). The result is an amazing & varied musical tapestry, best heard on the record's first side, a long suite covering from orchestral folk-pop with some psych leanings ("Un Gran Dia", "Max") to straight in-your-face hard rock ("Sleeping Rock") via typical early 70s prog ("Oliba") and uncategorisable experiments which defy all known rules ("Reprise"). 0337971 LP LPS 73 WAH WAH	JARKA - ORTODOXIA (+7") At the dawn of the seventies Barcelona's underground scene veered towards a jazz oriented fusion sound with echoes of Gary Burton, Miles Davis and John McLaughlin. Two bands were at the forefront of this movement: Om and Jarka. The later being the brainchild of Jordi Sabatés, one of the most talented pianists/keyboardists in the Catalan scene. A generation younger than the great late Tete Montoliu, with whom he also recorded, he found fame on the teenage pop charts of the late sixties with the outfit Pic-Nic, where he joined forces with Toti Soler and Doro Montaberry. After the split of Pic-Nic, he collaborated Hammond organ in Om, when the band was acting as a backing group on the recordings of the top Catalan artists, most notably Pau Riba whom they backed in his masterpiece debut LP Dioptria. In 1971, Sabatés started his own band, together with bassist Alfonso de Lucas and drummer Pedro Van Eeckout (ex Pan Y Regaliz). This was the line-up that went to record their debut LP, Ortodòxia, on the famed Estudis Gema in March 1971. Housed in a wonderful black & white sleeve courtesy of Guillem Paris (leading force behind Pan Y Regaliz), the record was a solid slice of psychedelic jazz-rock and featured contributions from some of the best musicians from the Barcelona scene: Toti Soler, J. Albert Amargos, Doro Montaberry and Ricard Sabatés. Hardly known outside Spain, this is classic album that ranks amongst the best from the European underground of early 1970s. 0337969 LP LPS 72 WAH WAH	OM (SPAIN) - OM (+7") Om -led by superb Catalan guitarist Jordi Toti Soler after his previous band Pic-Nic split- were one of the most interesting outfits to ever come out from Barcelona. Starting in 1968, their first recordings were done as a backing group for other artists like folk-singer Maria del Mar Bonet or american hippie Joe Skladzien, but most notably Pau Riba whom they backed on his debut LP the legendary Dioptria, one of the finest pieces of European psych ever. During all their early work, the band benefited from the organ playing of one of the most talented catalan pianists, Jordi Sabatés (of Ocells del més enllà fame) as well as the musical talents of two English brothers: drummer Peter Hodgkinson and his brother Tim on sax and keys (this is, of course, the same Tim Hodgkinson who founded Henry Cow, together with Fred Frith). By the time they released their LP on Edigsa in 1971, Om was already an experienced band, with important studio work on their back and countless gigs, having backed American blues-man Taj Mahal in his Madrid 1969 concerts. One particularity of Om was that, rather than having an established line-up, they worked as a musical concept where it was not so important the individuals playing as it was the resulting sound. Their only LP shows how, through the works of Miles Davies, Gary Burton and John McLaughlin, they had developed their sound from its original psych/folk-rock beginnings to an intensely psychedelic jazz rock fussion. A classic album that is hardly known outside Spain and ranks amongst the best of the era, sharing shoulders with similar underground European experiments by Min Bul, Colhemec Ensemble, Xhol, Dharma Quintet, Sunbirds, Full Moon Ensemble or the more progressive output of the British jazz of the era: John Surmans Trio, Nucleus or Michael Gibbs. Note this is a PAL disc. Tractor are not only a band,but an important part of the musical history of the North. If it hadn't been for them, their studio and their PA,and most importantly their festival- Deeply Vale, then quite a few bands may not have got off the ground. As well as established bands, newcomers to the stage were Mark E .Smith, The Ruts (who actually formed at the festival), Mick Hucknall, future members of OMD (in their forerunner Pegasus). Tractor started life as a two-piece and when they got back together after many years apart it was again the duo of Jim Milne (guitar,vocals) and drummer Steve Clayton. This DVD contains two sets performed in 2003, plus a host of extras concerning Deeply Vale. For those of you who have yet to come across their debut album, shame on you, this is a great introduction to the band. All these years later and Jim has lost none of the touch that inspired John Peel to say about him "the man responsible for the most urgent, flowing and logical guitar playing I've ever heard". In many ways Tractor have been something of a forgotten band, but this DVD shows you how powerful they are in concert. Jim sometimes is on acoustic, sometimes electric, but his playing is always full of passion whatever the instrument while Steve is much more than just a sidekick with a real understanding and intuition of what Jim is doing. The extras concerning Deeply Vale are fascinating, including footage and interviews at the time (including some clips of the band in the studio) plus loads of photos, then a return to Deeply Vale by Steve and Jim as they chat to Chris Hewitt then perform some music. There is the feeling of wanting this to be as complete a picture of the time and the people who were involved, which is really brought home by the three small pieces of film of people who have since died. One song "Wandel zur Ruh" is based on the lyrics of a Styrian Writer, Paula Grogger. The song "Namenlos" ("Nameless") is based around a cemetery in Vienna which contains the remains of souls who drowned in the river Danube. Norscq, a Paris based electronic musician, has been one of the key instigators of the French underground scene for more than 25 years. He founded the iconoclastic cult group The Grief in 1984, producing 10 exceptional releases. He has also been the producer/engineer for a large range of projects spanning from the electro-flamenco sounds of Von Magnet, the electro-acoustic experiments of the contemporary quartet Quattrophage or the intense dark techno of Mimetic Field. His new solo album on Staubgold is also the soundtrack to a movie directed by Vronique Ruggia. 'Gelatinosa Substantia' is a strange curiosity. Firstly, the sound feels as though it had been recorded over a 50 year time span. The quality and sharpness of the recording fluctuates and evolves. Possibly improving along with the emergence of the newer recording equipment of the era. We sense that the musicians are always the same despite the radical changes in quality. 0337934 LP ANNA 26 2090503379343 ANNA LOGUE	LISFRANK - MASK REWIND (+7") LISFRANK was an obscure one-man project from Savona area, Italy, active from 1980 onwards but not releasing much music ever since apart from a few tracks via the own Mask Productions label in 1982 and 1983. The first and only LISFRANK stand-alone release was the 12"EP "Man Mask" (Mask Productions, MKX 01, 1982), definitely one of the best and rarest early 80s minimal electro 12"s ever and on top of most want lists ever since, including the super hit "Its Life", as well as "Violence in my Mind". "Man without Limits" appeared on the labels equally rare and sought-after vinyl LP sampler "First Relation" (Mask Productions, MKLP 02, 1983). Another very experimental track called "Ombre" was released on the cassette compilation "The Voice/La Voce" (Area Condizionata AC2, 1983). That was the official story so far, even though LISFRANK was truly a pioneering project with a live appearance at the so-called "New Wave Party" in Savona, already in November 1980! So they were almost as early as Florentine stars Neon. Anyway, it took Anna almost a lifetime to track down LISFRANK, but with the key hint by Fulvio Delprato (thank you so much again!), he was finally found and convinced to release an album which has been entitled "Mask Rewind". It captures the majority of available recordings from 1980 onwards. LISFRANKs music is completely analogue electronics with drum machine (or real drums on two tracks), very unique and each a track a classic of its own kind. The early tracks until 1983 are rough and dark, and form the 12" album together with similar early composed but later recorded tracks thus creating an overall and coherent dark atmosphere throughout the whole album. As the 1984/85 tracks "Stay with me" and "My Toy" were more pop-oriented they didnt perfectly fit to the albums atmosphere and were thus put onto the accompanying 7". 0337935 2xLP ANNA 25 2090503379350 ANNA LOGUE	POEME ELECTRONIQUE - THE ECHOES FADE (2LP) POEME ELECTRONIQUE was Dave Hewson (synthesisers, production), Sharon Abbott (lyrics, lead and backing vocals), Julie Ruler (backing vocals) and Les Hewson (bass), formed in 1980 by Dave Hewson in South London, UK, in 1980. The deluxe 2LP vinyl album comprises 16 tracks of which 14 have never been published before. "The Echoes Fade" and "Voice" are the original versions taken off their original 7" from 1982. The album "The Echoes Fade" cannot be described other than being a masterpiece and one of the best-ever early 80s electropop records ever, and it surely has to be lined up with Rational Youth or Experimental Products cult albums (in terms of being minimal synth/wave scene reference albums), but to be frank, Anna thinks that POEME ELECTRONIQUE were even above their level. Truly, they had deserved to go on the successful path like Depeche Mode, OMD or Soft Cell, but fate was against them as it seems. The main difference to other electropop groups of the time was definitely that Dave did not only master his synths technically-wise, no, he also knew how to actually play, and when you hear his amazing multi-track manual sequencing, programming skills, great harmonies and melodies throughout the tracks, along with the two girls performances - well they can really sing! - you will agree there is some something remarkably extraordinary in these tracks. You will find minimal electropop super hits like "Rendezvous", "Shes an Image", "Fragile", or "Dilemma"; hauntingly beautiful melancholic tracks like "A Mourners Lament", "This Night" or "Its in the Atmosphere"; darkest minimal electronics on "Inside his Head"; and even more poppier tracks like "Follow". His first album "Windows on the World" has received wonderful feedback, from both fans and other musicians worldwide, and he is nowadays recognized as a great influence to many other contemporary electronic music artists. Stefan is indeed one of Germanys most talented contemporary composers of electronic pop music and taking into account that his time for music is rather limited and that his efforts in playing and finalizing the debut album with SONNENBRANDT in 2008 also took away much of his time for his solo project, his high quality output on all fronts is outstanding. With "Poly" he proves his continuous ability to write substantial and timeless melancholic electropop and electronic wave songs while most of the albums sounds have been generated on the wonderful Polymoog synthesisers, hence the title! "Silicon Beach" shows the Polymoogs great versatility to even create lovely South American flute sounds along the all analogue warm and dark synth sounds. On "Meltdown", fans of The Cures Disintegration album will almost get a heart attack from joy - what a wonderful track with real bass and acoustic guitar accompaniment! The album versions of "Oceans of Green" and "Lost City" are reworked and remixed versions of the tracks previously released on the "Colourblind EP". This time Anna and THE SILICON SCIENTIST are the CD "Bookmarks II" to all copies which is definitely more than just a bonus: it contains 72 minutes of outtakes from the "Poly" recording sessions, tracks from samplers, early mixes of tracks from the previous album and tracks from the very first THE SILICON SCIENTIST album "Inselwinter" which was never released. "Seven" is based upon a demo recording by Marc Schaffer and was accordingly co-written and solely recorded by Stefan. All synthesiser sounds on "Poly" and most of "Bookmarks II" have been generated on real analogue synthesisers (among them Korg MS-10, MS-20, Multimoog, Roland CR-78, SH-101, Solina String Ensemble, Waldorf Pulse Plus) - no virtual machines or plug-ins! The only exception is "Inselwinter I" which contains some sounds from the virtual analogue Access Virus synth... The label reached the end of the road and eventually closed over this period as its major artists: James Carr, Spencer Wiggins and the Ovations, found themselves out of fashion and out of hits, despite no collapse in quality. James Carr and Spencer Wiggins are represented here with some of their most impassioned recordings: Carr's pounding 'Freedom Train' and 'Wiggins' amazing take on 'Never Loved A Woman'. Label owners Quinton Claunch and Doc Russell strove to find to broaden the label's appeal during this time-frame. This included the launch of the country label Timmie, which saw Carmol Taylor release some incredible records. But Memphis was no Nashville and the hits didn't follow. Other ploys included licensing to major labels such as Chess and United Artist's Veep label, but nothing led to another artist breakthrough. Across the two CDs is some incredible southern soul recorded in Memphis and Muscle Shoals, not just by the headline acts but by Percy Milem and Willie Walker, future stars such as Timmy Thomas and the terminally obscure Willie Morgan. Westbound had a lot of great dance record releases which have been largely overlooked due to the funky nature of the successful acts like Ohio Players and Funkadelic. There are more great harmony groups to complement the Westbound Sound Of Detroit CD (CDSEWD 065) we issued in 1994. In fact there are only five tracks duplicated from that CD. More top quality unreleased sides have been unearthed by major soul acts including the excellent in't That Lovin'' by Denise LaSalle & Abe Tilmon from the Detroit Emeralds as well as an unheard recording 'm Slowly Moulding' by the Magictones. Cult Detroit vocalists Joe Matthews, Emanuel Lasky and Eddie Hill are all represented and there are further vocal group gems from Unique Blend, the Superlatives and the Houston Outlaws. Half of the CD is new to digital and only one of the tracks has featured on a Kent CD before. While the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton helped the world rediscover Muddy Waters and Sun House, blues obsessives like Bengt Olsson traveled to America in search of the fringe players who helped define the genre in the 30s and 40s. These masters, many barely recorded, quickly faded into obscurity when their medium left them poor, wolves at the door. What Olsson captured was a robust slice of haunting blues and gospel that would have otherwise been completely forgotten. Ashley Thompson, as a teenager, sang "Mingelwood Blues" with Gus Cannons Jug Stompers. But his story ended there until Bengt found him and recorded a set of songs that showcase a Thompson whose voice is now one with the gentle angels. Bishop Perry Tillis left the blues circuit, believing it to be tied with the devil, and went back home to preach. Thee recordings Bengt made of him preserved a legacy that is ever growing today. Jugsmen Dewey Corley and Walter Miller might have been the most well known of Bengts subjects, yet there recordings for him carry with them a deep purity that has rarely been heard before. Wolf's At The Door is eerie, celebratory, dark and redemptive, fragile, lonely and scandalous. PRICE MUCH HIGHER, ALL ORDERS CANCELLED. Double vinyl version. Sister recording to 2007's Red Album. Deep & dark, this overflows with gossamer melodies & striking, earnest riffs that have become the band's signature. Blue Record could be considered their prog album, as it takes the grandiose tendencies and epic arrangements they displayed so well on their initial full length, and follows those ideas through to their logical next levels. It's a thoroughbred rock ALBUM like they used to make of old, with a smattering of proggy sensibilities and a willingness to go pretty 'out there' at times, without losing the flow or really having a clunker of a track. When all's said and done, that's a recipe for a keeper.
