Certainly guitarist Kimio Mizutani had already enjoyed a certain amount of crticial exposure following stints with Love Live Life + One and Masahiko Satohs Sound Brakers and it is Satohs jazzy fuzz guitar licks that help to lift this album to a higher level. Unfortunately this was the ensembles only album, but the concept work, Ceremony - Buddha Meets Rock, is an absolute classic. As the title suggests, this 1971 recording was an attempt to fuse Buddhist-influenced spiritual vibe into an innovative oriental form form of hypnotic psychedelic prog rock. . All in all a rather weird record but the sound is mindblowing - experimental and trippy, but never too free or over the top, and at times a more traditional Japanese style of music lurks in the background. Although the Floyd influences are highly apparent, the band produces an original sound which defines its own unique identity rather than being a reflection of the British and American bands that were dominating the genre. Although there isw a keyboard-dominated opening, synthesisers are relegated to a supporting role, and thire sparse presence is restricted to occasional sound effects. The psychedelic ambiance comes largely from the guitars, electric sitars and intelligent percussion. If Slot leaned more towards dreamy, pop-like melodies, Luder nudges them closer to the hesher crowd. We're not talking High on Fire territory, but nevertheless Sonoluminescence has more drive, more immediacy to it. The songs are smartly put together. Given the various ways the members approach rock music (alt, blues, stoner, fussy label head, etc), it's not surprising that Luder never really takes the easy or obvious route. In terms of stoner rock, the pop structures and songwriting arent necessarily any better than what showed up with The Atomic Bitchwaxs TAB4, but Hommes chic swagger, Jones legacy and Grohls go-anywhere-anytime drumming elevate Them Crooked Vultures to a different level of presentation. Over The Shadow's Door is a unified artistic project by the ever creative Weisman siblings. A title was chosen and then Kurt, Chris and Emma set about making music / art to correspond with the title. This is the result. Kurt opens things up on side a with lovely spiralling acoustic guitar patterns and his trademark high angelic tenor falsetto vocals. On side b, Chris slashes and cuts through echoed word raps over spindly guitar licks and drum stick clicks. Emma's artwork is a wonderful children's book style cross hatch illustration. 300 hand numbered copies with hand stamped labels, on colored vinyl.

0337530 LP INDLP 41 DE STIJL	NOTHING, CHARLIE - OUTSIDE/INSIDE Charlie Nothing was the fractured-psyche pseudonym of author, father, horsekeeper, organic farmer, beekeeper, philosopher and clown Charles Martin Simon, inventor of the dingulator (guitar sculptures made out the metal from American cars). Charlies only visible offering to the record buying public was really anything but. Due to it's rarity, "The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing", issued by Takoma Records in 1967, has been a source of consternation for in-the-know types for years. "Outside/Inside", the second and only other Charlie Nothing LP, originally issued by Everitt Enterprises, thematically follows with two sidelong flute-based instrumentals. Nowhere on wax will you find more palpable preserved air of a real-time dropout scene than with these sides of Nothing. It is a wonder that these records circulated at all outside the vacuum in which they were created. It also refers to this almost forgotten instrument, which was passed on by the fathers. The aim is to bring back and liberate the lute. The four compositions on Ex Patris form a circular narrative of interlocking repetitive melodic series. The follow up to Important release It is All That is Made, kicks off with the pro apocalyptic track "The Day is Coming." "Amor Fati" (Love is a Religion) channels a deep interest in both love for religion and religious belief in love. Multiple palindromes are juxtaposed and linger. "Son of Dawn" consists of mirrored lute harmonics that serve as an intro to the 13-minute elegiac "After The Fire Has Devoured All It Will Consume Itself." The piece builds and releases tension and puts layer upon layer of ecstatic melody. At the end even the work itself gets devoured but it remains eternal, with no potential beginning and without end. Not only does he beat the drums for goth-industrialist outfit Coph Nia, and work as a sound engineer and producer for everything from hair metal to contemporary art music, he also plays in a bunch of punk bands. No wonder his own neofolk project, Apatheia, seems to suffer from, well, apathy. Despite existing for about a decade, it has only produced a few releases, in highly limited editions on highly obscure labels. But as anyone who has heard any of this material knows, they have been well worth tracking down. Apatheia's songs are typically well arranged and well played, with a strong sense of melody and sound. A song like "Rot in the Core" is worth the entire productions of some of the neofolk outfits out there. This situation couldn't last. It would only be a matter of time before a label grabbed Apatheia and gave its music the audience it deserved. This label turned out to be renowned Swedish label Cold Meat Industry, and now they're re-releasing Apatheia's Lifethesis. This is what main man Andersson has to say for himself: "Originally released in an edition of 100 copies by Stridulum Recordings in 2003, Lifethesis consists of some of the earliest Apatheia material, recorded in Linköping between 2001 and 2002. The recording quality is rough and the performances are often spontaneous and not always perfect - and all for the better! I considered remastering the album, but quickly realized that it did more harm than good. To me, these old bedroom recordings have a certain quality to them that couldn't have been reproduced in a proper studio setting". While his musical merits speak for themselves, there is more that makes Apatheia a bit unique in the world of neofolk. In a genre obsessed with symbols of power, conquest and control, Apatheia (the term denotes a state of detachment from the world) is all about retreating to ones bedroom, to regroup and plot ones revenge against everyone and everything. A bit like punk, only less noisy, less smelly and - lets admit it - less silly. So, rejoice that the notoriously perfectionist studio rat Andersson has decided to let some of his old treasures out of the vault. Having of late adopted a less lavish, more immediate death metal sound, the band complete their second decade of existence with their seventh LP, Into Nights Requiem Infernal. Even those who heard 2007s The Novella Reservoir will be surprised at how much November's Doom have upped their deathly approach. There are two solid, weepy doom ballads, but the larger portion of the record is geared toward a classic US death metal sound with flourishes of melancholic ambience. Sonically, its more Opeth than Anathema, though of course Novembers Doom was a band before either of them, so take that for what its worth. Open-minded fans will still have no problem getting into the bands songwriting, which remains of a consistently high quality, no matter the genre in which theyre situating. 0337460 CD KEM 101 KEMADO	SAVIOURS - ACCELERATED LIVING When reviewing Saviourssophomore release, Into Abaddon, I described that record as the Oakland band's Ride the Lightning. It showed that Saviours were able to take that early Bay Area metal sound and make something a little more unique out of it. While Accelerated Living doesnt exactly have the band in a holding pattern, it does show that the band has gone as far as they can go with tweaking that sound. What theyre doing instead is doubling down on what they do well - the chugga-chugga riffs, the harmonized leads, a general sense of reckless abandon - and throwing out the occasional solo that's straight from the Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman playbook. The band also gotten stronger at writing memorable hooks, and the strained holler/singing is less a liability this time around. A new drummer and fourth club member has been recruited to enhance the ferocity of their sound, taking the noise to the next level with offset guitars, shouts and wails. The first album dealt with foetal burials, plastic windows and banning gin in 1840. The second features parrots, the primitiveness of modern life and sexual yearning on long distance lorry drives. It's hard not be intrigued by the titles alone: Love on An Oil Rig, Women Versus Children, and Periscope Envy. This is the sound of the purest voices, guitars, basses, drums, circular saws, churches, hands, boots, thoraxes and lungs, juxtaposed to an awkward perfection. Originally issued as a super limited hand sprayed dub plate, the first run of this cut sold out on the first day of release back in 2007, and was featured in The Wires top dub chart for that year. Now its been heroically re-mastered at Transition and re-housed in the trademark Werk Discs bag for general consumption. Whilst dubstep has moved through various stages of development, Disrupt has stripped the dub ethic back to the bone and created a spaced-out fog of rugged and raw dancefloor sci-fi. Jan "Disrupt" Glieichmar is amongst the leading exponents of contemporary dub, and alongside the likes of Skream, DMZ, Actress and Burial, has pioneered a unique palette of low end interpretation harking back to the 80s era of digital reggae, where producers such as Augustus "Gussie" Clarke, more reknowned for purist roots dub, started introducing an electronic backdrop called the tech riddim.
