By the end of 1969, with the encouragement of producer Mike Vernon, he had cut his first solo album, Patent Pending, credited to the Johnny Almond Music Machine, on which he played a half-dozen instruments. The combination of Howard Werths vocals and Keith Gemmells versatile use of sax, flute and clarinet is just immediately highly fascinating. 0309190 LP TIME 710 TIMELESS	BOBAK/JONS/MALONE - MOTHERLIGHT Known by the name of an album rather than the name of the group, Motherlight produced an album full of spooky psychedelia with progressive leanings, which works really well. Almost all tracks have a slightly unsettling atmosphere, originating in a clever use of dissonance, without being quirky. On A Meadow - Lea has good fuzz guitar paired to pastoral lyrics, while Mona Lose bears overt traces of malice. Burning The Weed sounds quite surprisingly akin to US Kaleidoscope. 0306047 LP TIME 700 TIMELESS	BONZO DOG DOO-DAH BAND - GORILLA The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (also known as The Bonzo Dog Band, The Bonzo Dog Dada Band and, colloquially, as "The Bonzos") are a band created by a group of British art-school denizens of the 1960s. Moving over to Liberty Records, the Bonzos released their first album, Gorilla, that included "Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold" which savagely parodied their early "trad" jazz roots and featured some of the most deliberately inept jazz playing ever recorded. The record company only allowed two hours of studio time per track, so it was completed in a single take to allow for the far more complex "The Intro and the Outro" in which every member of the band was introduced and played a solo, starting with genuine band members. Basically, it rocks good and hard, remains unafraid of letting lunacy into the lyrics and takes off into the realms of excess with impressive confidence. Edgar's immense vocal power holds its own throughout the loudest sections and the thudding blues elements never get boring. There were splashes of Santana, brushes of Iron Butterfly, dabblings of Yes, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, and countless others, but never to the point of derivity. Fans of just about any genre or sub-genre of classic rock music will find much to savor on this disc. The opening titular track is a hippie paradise of chugging, textured acoustic rhythm guitar twined with spacey fuzz solos and tight vocal harmonies. Formed from the ashes of beat band the Hellions in 1966, the short-lived Deep Feeling were one of the most adventurous acts of their time. STRANGELY STRANGE - HEAVY PETTING Dr. Strangely Strange were an experimental Irish folk group formed in Dublin in 1967 by Tim Booth (vocals and guitar) and Ivan Pawle (bass and keyboards).Soon they teamed with multi-instrumentalist Tim Goulding (vocals and keyboards), an aspiring painter, and began living and rehearsing in a house owned by Goulding's girlfriend, Orphan Annie, which its tenants nicknamed "The Orphanage." They had a powerful sound and their strong compositions were always based in inspired and highly memorable melodies. Their debut-album is progressive rock in a less symphonic and slightly rougher vein than later albums. Some of the tracks ("Wild and Exciting" and "Love Quiver") even borders on heavy progressive. There was no Mellotron in their sound yet, but Gerard Koerts' excellent use of flute, organ and vibes took well care of the band's progressive sound already in this state of their career. The sound is rather different but is also tighter (different rhythm section), but the three frontmen Arbus, Caines and Nicholson are still there. "Snafu" is almost a jazz album, deeply rooted in the avant-garde - with its Charles Mingus cover version, some tracks that play backwards etc. Its what the British press wouldve once called "jazz-tinged". While the revved-up renditions of traditional British folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group members were also (at least at the outset) talented songwriters as well as interpreters. Some fantastic guitar(surprised?), and some great off-color lyrics too.The horns are sloppy and perfect for the songs done on this album. What would "love that burns" be without the subtle horns riffing away in the background? The group's a trio, all of whom sing lead vocals from time to time, and instrumentation includes organ, harmonium, piano, percussion, guitars, electric harpsichord, mandolin, and cello: all swirling around in a style that's got traces of late work by Tim Hardin, Love, Nico, and early Roy Wood. 0309188 LP TIME 709 TIMELESS	FOREST - FULL CIRCLE This album has both brutal and beautiful elements, and the raw acoustic tunes create weird and very enchanting music. There are much medieval influences here, but the overall aesthetics are not luckily very idealized or fantasy related, but sincere and realistic, filled with mystery, misery and violence. Music is peaceful but partly disturbing too. "Bluebell" was quite good track, and the last song "Autumn Childhood" is very weird with strange rhythm changes and several parts. "The Midnight Hanging of A Runaway Serf" was also quite affecting in its brutality and realism. "Graveyard" is also very beautiful and quite accessible song, but maybe best of them all is "Gypsy girl & Rambleway", describing a love affair with very raw medieval sounds. 0328898 LP SBLP 72 SECOND BATTLE	GILA - LIVE - FREE ELECTRIC ROCK SESSIONS "Free Electric Rock Sessions" is a live recording from Cologne in 1972 that was broadcasted "live in studio" by a radio station in Germany (WDR). Although this album was never officially released at the time, this should be the second Gila album and even if only played as a radio broadcast, all of the tracks were brand new and are not available on their other two albums. In a similar fashion to the stunning debut album "Free Electric Sound", this album pulls out all the underground Krautrock vibes and is a truely great album. Some years ago these recordings found their way onto CD from "Garden Of Delights" (Nightworks). As this is not a studio album, the sound is not perfect, but the recordings have been (once again) restored at its best for this vinyl release. 0312108 2xLP SBLP 69 SECOND BATTLE	IRISH COFFEE - LIVE AT ROCKPALAST 2005 (2LP) "IRISH COFFEE" was one of the best hardrock-bands from the seventies that ever came out of BELGIUM. Though the band recorded only 1 LP & 4 Singles, all collectors-items ,they are regarded as one of the important masterpieces of hardrock worldwide.The band stayed together from 1970 till 1975 and played a lot of concerts together with some great bands like,Golden Earring,Uriah Heep,Focus,Chicken Shack,Chris Farlowe and many more.Their one European "hit" was "Masterpiece",that you can hear on this MySpace, plus 3 more songs from their 1971 album. The band got together again in 2002 and recorded a new Album on the Fuzzy label. 30 years later, in 2005 to our surprise there was a comeback at a Rockpalast gig in December 2005. From the old personell there are still 2 musicians on stage : William Souffreau, the main songwriter and singer and Luc de Clus, the genious Solo-Guitarrist. This music is timeless and the three other younger musicians dont let you think that this is an Oldie event; we listen to modern rock that has its roots deep in the seventies - from the altogether 14 tracks 8 tracks have been released in the seventies on singles and on the one and only LP. It was a fantastic Rockpalast gig that was aired from German Television WDR in January 2006 for half an hour. SECOND BATTLE now releases as a limited 1000 copies edition both on CD and Double-LP the whole concert that lasts for almost 64 minutes. The recordings have been especially remastered once again for CD and Vinyl and have now a much better ,Power-sound" and will bring to smile all rockfans that like early seventies rock to listen to in top quality. 0306053 LP TIME 704 TIMELESS	MCDONALD & GILES - MCDONALD & GILES The music on McDonald and Giles contains many of the pastoral and musically complex elements of King Crimson, while generally avoiding that band's darker tendencies. The song "Flight of the Ibis" has the a similar melody and rhythm to King Crimson's "Cadence and Cascade", with different lyrics. The album is also notable in that it contains a guest appearance by Steve Winwood, playing organ and piano on "Turnham Green." Winwood's group Traffic were also working on John Barleycorn Must Die at Island Studios at the same time. 0309195 LP TIME 713 TIMELESS	PANAMA LIMITED - INDIAN SUMMER Late 60's jugband blues outfit led by Denis Parker alongside Gary Compton (harmonica) and Brian Strachan (guitar), the Panama Limited Jugband, also named after a Bukka White song (from 1930). The band was based in the Richmond area of London, which at the time was kind of a hotbed for blues (the Crawdaddy Club), especially acoustic style blues. Shortly thereafter, however, Denis became disenchanted with the music business. Thankfully he left us these recordings as an artefact. They shortened their name to Panama Ltd. for a second album by which time Liz Hann, their vocalist, had left and been replaced by Anne Matthews. The group led by Ken Elliott was originally called The Next Collection in the mid-1960s. They changed their name to Moving Finger, but when it was discovered that another band already had that name, they renamed themselves Second Hand, in reference to the fact that all their instruments and other gear had been bought used. In this album fully developed progressive compositions and all kinds of keyboards dominate, producing very different textures. The rhythms are complex and unusual. Their debut album, St Radigunds (B&C, 1971), was an innovative work, with Barbara Gaskin on vocals, Julian Cusack on violin, Martin Cockerham on guitar and Tony Cox on electronic keyboards. This sequel, Old Boot Wine was slightly less innovative and disruptive although the textures got thicker (cello, flute) and jazzier. He was a local legend whose psych-folk influence can be heard in such contemporary Welsh groups as Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. His one English-language album is this 1970 Outlander, an outstanding marriage of musicianship and eclecticism. Its jazz-Indo-psych ragas merge seamlessly with its acid folksongs and Dylan-esque meditations on relationships and politics. Another beautifully-judged blend of original and traditional material, it received extravagant praise but failed to break through commercially, spelling the end for the bands original incarnation. It makes its long-awaited reappearance on vinyl here, as a deluxe double LP set. Featuring a gatefold sleeve packed with rare images, a lavish 12-page booklet with an introduction from their guitarist David Costa and a detailed band history, and numerous bonus tracks, it is the fullest edition of this classic album ever assembled. With photos and the story of the group as related by its members. The Ant Trip Ceremony album was recorded during two sessions. the first session was in February of 1968 in a rented hall at Oberlin. Steve was there for the first sessions but had left Oberlin by the spring of 1968 and was not present for the second recording session. The album was called "Twenty Four Hours"because that was the feeling behind the sessions. The band felt ready to record their original songs. These were performed live before student audiences. During live shows, the band was wild, but sadly no live tapes exist. Thus the original songs done on the album when performed live were more psychedelic and improvised. The band was known for getting into strange and long jams. Furthermore no song was ever done twice exactly the same. They were, in some ways like the Grateful Dead of the region. When the band played it was a happening, a genuine psychedelic event. Shows went on for hours, with the audience in a wide variety of states of consciousness. The artwork for the album was of its time with psychedelic-mind-zapping art work. It was without a doubt a counterculture statement!! Musically the whole album has a strong west-coast feel and influenced of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver but also Hendrix are felt troughout the album. With their sound they are comparable to Embryo, Brainstorm, Xhol, or Thirsty Moon. Two of the band's more known names are Andreas Hohmann and Basil Hammoudi. The former was on drums on Kraftwerk's first LP. The latter did the percussion on the only LP of Kraftwerk's predecessor Organisation. Ibliss released only one LP called "Supernova". It was recorded with Conny Plank in 1972, and then released in a small edition on Aamok, a sublabel of Spiegelei. In 2008 a bootleg version from Retro Disc International appeared on the market. This cheap sorry effort was supposed to come from Spain, like it was marked on the cover, but, in effect, is instead from Germany. In the mid 1950s, while the Western World was still immersed in the aftermath of World War Two, a new concept was discovered. This concept, stroppy and rebellious, was the teenager. Up till then you were a child until you became an adult. One minute you were in short pants, the next you were smoking a pipe. Now there was an intermediary stage, during which you could experience the nascent pleasures of adulthood without having to succumb to its more mundane disciplines. These new teenagers needed new idols. They couldnt relate to the polite swing of the dance bands. Some found modern jazz a bit too esoteric, while, to be honest, the heart-throbs of the early 50s mostly looked like they were in their early 50s! Suddenly a wild, new sound from the USA was being broadcast over select airwaves. Singers with exotic names like Jerry Lee, Elvis, Buddy and Gene were strutting their stuff. Hollywood was beginning to embrace this movement, and, over in The UK, jazzmen, dance band members, crooners and hopeful kids were suddenly buying guitars, greasing back their hair and rockin like there was no tomorrow. It really did. Hell, it was even worth a lick and a sniff. Appropriate though. Like 'You're Lucky To Have Friends Like Us', this one is all over the place but quite a bit more refined and mature. The songs are a bit longer. Not such a slap on the back of the neck like the earlier stuff. Less of a head rush and more like a an intense trip that could go VERY WRONG at any moment. They've roped in one of their heroes BEN WALLER from the COUNTRY TEASERS for vocals on a song called 'Unchained Ladies Shopper'. Sounds like something between Country Teasers and early Sonic Youth I suppose. W hat a great combination! SHIT AND SHINE are all about great but totally awkward combinations. Theres a song called 'There Are 2 Bakers Now' for instance, where you can hear twigs snapping, people loving, and mud sloshing around while a seriously eerie ritualistic drum thud thud thud plays out over the top of some kind of satanic chant?! mmm hmmmm. Or the song called 'When Extreme Dogs Go Wrong' that sounds like some totally kick ass evil southern rock break down but with a sun burnt scumbag drunk football hooligan rattling on about how "Wherever I go ,I go for football". What remains are these miraculous voices. And us, here, finally able to listen to them, through hardships and deaths - these voices that have gone through these faraway eras that no one alive today has experienced. Let's not forget that most of these profoundly sincere or ferociously ironic blues were created during the dark years of the Great Depression. However, this selection does not constitute a theme-based anthology. We simply wanted to present a few little-known or forgotten female blues singers whose ambiguous leanings, double-entendres, and uncompromising crudeness had been censored by the propriety of these times ruled by sanctimonious prudishness and despicable segregation.
