As ever the Heads taped most of the performances, and in Tilburg, they got an audience tape, desk tape, and stage tape, so, with the aid of the mighty Latch they put together this here "Bootleg". A perfect snapshot of the Heads in full flight, as heavy and as dense as they can get, yet soaring far off into the vapors with their inimitable psych noise blastings. Much ignored in the UK for the past decade or so, the Heads might well be getting a wave of recognition right now, and this is a very good way to immerse oneself into the world of the Heads. Another true classic from the SWF (German Radio Station) vaults comes with the STUD recordings from summer 1972. At that time the STUD members had said "farewell" to their English record label Decca and spent most of their time on the Continent, mainly in Germany where they were rather successful. With John Weider on violin and guitar they had just an album (September) out on BASF and played a lot of Club gigs and festivals. During their 1972 tour they were invited by radio station SWF to play a recording session at radio stations main studio U1 in Baden-Baden. There were two sessions that took place in April and Mai 1972. STUD recorded titles from their first and second album but varied the material to give the recordings a special claim. From hard rocking "Good Things", to fourteen minutes epic title "Horizon" and shining ballad "Make Me High" these recordings are an impressive prove of the bands musical bandwidth and the bandmembers excellent technical skills. Des Ark is primarily singer/guitarist Aimee Collet Argote. She had previously been involved with Rubeo, which released a 7" on feminist label Mr. Lady in 1998. Des Ark began in 2001 as a full band but eventually sized down to the duo of Argote and drummer Tim Herzog (also of Milemarker). Exotic Fever Records released a split 7" with Bellafea in October 2004, followed in 2005 by the first full-length, Loose Lips Sink Ships, through Bifocal Media/Bakery Outlet Records. The latter was recorded by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Herzog left the band in September 2005, leaving Argote to continue touring and recording as Des Ark. See now theres this really fine line when it comes to doing catchy, poppy punk right without it sounding generic and dated. And of course there's one country that pulls it off better than the rest of the world, every time - it's Canada. From the Bonaduces through to Painted Thin via Porter Hall, Weakerthans and Propagandhi Canada knows what the fuck is up (and I think the country definitely has labels like Endearing Records to thank for that)... well Sixty Stories features Paul Furgale from Painted Thin, and there's definitely a latter Painted Thin (and Bonaduces) vibe here - those "from the heart" slacker style vocals, the unbelievable hooks and just an all around greatness in its honesty. What seperates this band from Painted Thin though is the addition of "keyboards and beeps" that just add to the awesome popiness of it all. Now were not talking Get Up Kids rip off here, although I think fans of that "lost it more than Shades Apart" piece of shit may well think Sixty Stories are a great band...-The Company With The Golden Arm. Repressed by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964 during the American folk revival years, this quintessential work proves that Guthrie was a true minstrel of the other face of America, the one that you can't find in history books: tales of poverty, migration, storms, illness, hunger and harsh criticism of the American government, incapable of committing to equality.
