LUV MACHINE - WITCHES WAND/DON'T LET THE BLUES
Originally released in 1970, Witches Wand is as classic as it gets from this magical era in underground music. To this day it remains a firm favourite at 60's mod, psych and 70's rock clubs up and down the country. Formed in the tropical climates of Barbados 1967, The Luv Machine relocated to the UK in late 1968 to seek fame and fortune in those swinging times. The band started out playing the underground black soul clubs of the Midlands area. Their sound was a lot harder than the initial club circuit in which they were being booked. Influenced by Hendrix, Cream, Credence Clearwater Revival and other more obscure hard rock bands of the time, Luv Machine managed to combine elements of both rock & soulful psych with a funky progressive groove. Added to this was a Caribbean vibe, which made them completely unique amongst rivals of the day. The bands self titled debut album that was released for Polydor in 1971, has become a much revered and collectable item amongst collectors and fans of the era. Unfortunately the band split before the album was actually released, which meant it was never actually given the publicity it surely deserved. Who knows what may of happened if the situation would have been different for them. * Feature previously unreleased B-Side; 'Don't Let The Blues Take Over Pt.3'. The sole album from male-female duo Jade Stone & Luv is a lost gem from the heart of the psychedelic 1970s. Composed and self-produced in Nashville, "Mosaics; Pieces Of Stone" went unnoticed by the music industry upon release. Fortunately for us, it didnt disappear forever, but simply went into retreat, biding its time. While almost unknown outside specialist circles, "Mosaics" has been an underground cult favorite for many years. The combination of top-level songwriting, skillful guitar/keyboard arrangements and soaring vocals is just too impressive to ignore. And beyond these obvious qualities, the album has something subtle and unique, a magnetic power that keeps drawing the listener back. One of Jade Stone & Luv's earliest advocates was the legendary New York City musicologist Paul Major. Heres a typical Major impression of the music on "Mosaics": "Groovy love vibes thru a prism of jade statues in swinging singles apartment complex action... FANKHAUSER, MERRELL - MAUI - DAYS IN PARADISE
A welcome Rereleased reissue!!! The band MU was formed in 1969 when Merrell Fankhauser teamed up with Jeff Cotton of Captain Beefhearts band. When it was discovered that the Hawaiian Islands could have remnants of the sunken Mu civilization, the band decided to move to the island of Maui. But by 1974 all but Merrell Fankhauser had left for the mainland. Merrell was now staying with his girlfriend violinist Mary Lee in the two story Tarzan style jungle house which Merrell had built, complete with flowing lily ponds. The stream cascaded around the house forming a natural pool and waterfall, an ideal setting for Merrell to compose his laid back cosmic music. Around this same time the Tibetan Lama Kar Mapa came to the island for a meditation retreat that was sponsored by one of Merrell and Marys neighbours in the jungle. They did a special Black Crow ceremony with 400 devoted hippies all meditating for peace and harmony for all beings on the earth. Merrell and Mary were the first musicians in the United States to play modern music for the Lama. They lived in the Maui rain forest in their jungle retreat for over seven years. Late in 1975 they visited L.A and recorded the Maui Album. The album recording originally started at MCA Studios in Hollywood with producer Dino Airelli who went on to head up Dark Horse Records for George Harrison. Due to Dinos busy schedule he was unable to finish the album. It was later finished in San Francisco and came out on a small independent label Maui Music. It sold a few thousand copies and disappeared. The album is released here in its entirety with 7 bonus tracks including an unreleased version of "Some Of Them Escaped". This is a true artefact from the Hippy dream of Peace, Love and Harmony for the world! |

Composed and self-produced in Nashville, "Mosaics; Pieces Of Stone" went unnoticed by the music industry upon release. While almost unknown outside specialist circles, "Mosaics" has been an underground cult favorite for many years. Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works. "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork which is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock. |

After countless self-released 3" CD-Rs, heres the first more widely distributed full-length LP by Holland's Rutger Zuydervelt presenting six tracks of post-industrial ambience. Zuydervelt works with live instruments, mostly piano and guitar, and intense computer processing to create gloomy instrumentals. Zuydervelt's tracks develop very slowly and he takes all the time in the world to push them to the level of density his music requires. The album starts with the snaps and crackles of "Kreukeltape", its treated piano giving the track a distinct deteriorating charme. "Somerset" features Zuydervelt on guitar and has a very physical presence to it, mostly through the noisy digital hiss in the background. In "J'espère Zuydervelt delicately layers feedback and white noise on top of a repeating piano theme. The magnum opus of "Marijn" is the 18 minute album ender "Lawine" though. Zuydervelt starts looping piano, but soon departs from there and plays a menacing melody followed by a transistory section that leads to the grand finale: A five minute noise orgy that sounds like plugging headphones into the turbine of an Airbus. This is quite a surprise when compared to the overall quiet nature of the remainder of the LP, but it sums up a very dense and satisfying album. |

Since 1995 Daniel Padden has been a member of Volcano The Bear, with several highly regarded album releases on Nurse With Wound's United Diaries label, Textile and Beta-Lactam Ring Records. So the first SHIT AND SHINE record ('You're Lucky To Have Friends Like Us') came out on Riot Season on vinyl so white it gave you the urge to bite into it. It really did. Hell, it was even worth a lick and a sniff. Appropriate though. Like 'You're Lucky To Have Friends Like Us', this one is all over the place but quite a bit more refined and mature. The songs are a bit longer. Not such a slap on the back of the neck like the earlier stuff. Less of a head rush and more like a an intense trip that could go VERY WRONG at any moment. They've roped in one of their heroes BEN WALLER from the COUNTRY TEASERS for vocals on a song called 'Unchained Ladies Shopper'. Sounds like something between Country Teasers and early Sonic Youth I suppose. W hat a great combination! SHIT AND SHINE are all about great but totally awkward combinations. Theres a song called 'There Are 2 Bakers Now' for instance, where you can hear twigs snapping, people loving, and mud sloshing around while a seriously eerie ritualistic drum thud thud thud plays out over the top of some kind of satanic chant?! mmm hmmmm. Or the song called 'When Extreme Dogs Go Wrong' that sounds like some totally kick ass evil southern rock break down but with a sun burnt scumbag drunk football hooligan rattling on about how "Wherever I go ,I go for football". |

Born on May 20th, 1941, in Montenegro, Janko began his formal musical training at the age of five. Although an heir to the Slavic and Balkan tradition, he never set aside the more modern styles of jazz, soul and pop, an openmindedness which also led him to try his luck in Paris in 1960 (where he still lives). Working ten hours a day with a never-faltering persistence, Janko swiftly joined the professional circles, adding up sessions, joys and disappointments. This master multi instrumentalist produced more than thirty albums for record companies specialized in Library Music. Most of the selections included on Last Impressions were recorded for Montparnasse 2000 in the seventies. These opus prove how broad Janko's field of activity can be, how developed was his capacity to digest and to merge his multiple influences and create this timeless language. |

A long-awaited reissue, almost heaven-sent: Pop Instrumental de France, extraordinary in many ways, is also one of the most hard to find record of the early seventies French jazz-funk-pop-baroque style (also known as progressive rock). Intensely sought after by collectors, DJs and other sound-diggers , the original record had been released in very small quantities, which makes it almost impossible to find in its original pressing, hence the interest of this LP reissue. Composer Laurent Petitgirard recorded under the name of Aleph a first 7" titled Toccata/Tin Song (Disques AZ, 1969), then a second, Love Memories/Injection (Disques AZ, 1969). Finally, he wrote the Pop Instrumental de France album and, in only three days, recorded it in the studio Wagram in Paris with a band specially created for this occasion. But during the recording process, there was few room left for improvisation, Laurent Petitgirard having written everything except for some choruses. On drums was the great Andr Sitbon, Etienne Pclard was on violin), Patrice Quentin was playing sax and flute, Patrick Mondon was another violinist a first-rate casting with Laurent Petitgirard himself playing all the keyboard parts: piano, harpsichord, Hammond organ. In 1971, both the 7 Soho/La Danse des Squelettes and the album Pop Instrumental de France (Vogue, 1971) were released. |

Within the 60s & 70s, countless records by the "Frank Pleyer Big Band", "Frank Pleyer Combo", "Orchestra Frank Pleyer" but also by his alter egos "Simon Hardenbergh" or "Pedro Gonez" appeared on various small German labels like Elite, Europhon or Dansan, including some long players for MPS Records. All these albums remained widely unnoticed with the exception of a late 60s big band funk album "Topless", originally released on Frank Valdor small Hippo label and desperately sought out by international groove collectors ...followed by another masterpiece in the shape of a more Latin & funk orientated project. From time to time he also composed and played for the tiny German library label Golden Ring (for radio and TV use only) under his real name Frank Pleyer, but then recorded one particular cult album for the Golden Ring publishers under the name of Joe Fender, that stands out as his best and grooviest work ever! It was only pressed in small amounts and never released to the record shops, but was full of brilliant bossa arrangements with pulsating Latin funk rhythms and scat choruses. This famous album left its mark among collectors of European grooves, who are still willing to pay hundreds for an original LP copy today. |

The 60s saw his first foray into film music, as a ghost-writer for Michel Magne. A master artist of the night, his incessant hard work meant his reputation would grow quickly. It is without doubt the 70s that saw him accomplish himself artistically and claim his place as a leading arranger and composer. His elegant, distinguished writing style firmly imposed itself throughout a series of essential records, which would make their unquestionable, albeit subtle, mark upon the era. His name is most often linked to Laszlo Szabo, the actor-director for whom he would compose his two greatest soundtracks: the unsurpassable Les Gants Blancs du Diables (1973) and the seductive Zig Zig (1975). Between the making of these two albums he would compose the soundtrack to the offbeat film La Grande Trouille ou Tendre Dracula (1974) with a divine track interpreted by Miou-Miou. The 3 albums were released on Francis Dreyfuss newly created Eden Roc label. |
