Chris "Noggin" McCullough started his musical career at the age of sixteen in a group called Paradox based in the Fulham neighbourhood of London. He played guitar with Slouch (now a professional roadie) on drums, Gary Claydon on bass and his friend guitarist Bob "Derwood" Andrews, who joined vintage punk group Generation X (featuring Billy Idol) in 1976. After giving Derwood a hand as guitar roadie for Generation X, in early 1978 Noggin joined Private Vices, a punk group based in Earl's Court, London. Private Vices toured England with the Dickies, played all over the London club scene and in 1979 recorded the original version of "Total Control," issued on the French Skydog label on the "Les Plus Grands Succès du Punk" 1984 anthology. Private Vices' bass player Bruno Blum was also a famous French music critic and later found fame as a reggae and rock singer, guitar player and producer, as well as a music historian, photographer and cartoonist. When the short-lived Red Rage trio was formed in 1980 following Private Vices demise in late 1979, Blum arranged to have Flicknife Records release this single, and drew its cover art.
