The album 'Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth' is seen as 24-Carat
Black's first and final chapter, barely a footnote in the
well-documented history of Stax. 'Gone: The Promises Of
Yesterday' features 6 tracks, recorded in the first half of the
'70s and meant for a second LP which never saw the light of day
due to the label's financial problems and some rumblings within
the band's line up. This collection is by no means a sequel.
Missing are the poignant and bleak sermons, replaced by dusky,
sensuous and druggy re-workings of love songs that Dale Warren
had written as far back as 1965. The band's creative force
Warren was an arranger who started out at Motown in the '60s.
From the late '60s throughout the early '70s he composed the
majority of string scores for the soul artists on Stax Records,
arranging for such artists as Billy Eckstine, Eddie Floyd,
Isaac Hayes, Albert King and the Staple Singers. (In fact, the
title track, 'Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday', also appears on
the Mad Lads' surprisingly psychedelic 'A New Beginning'-LP, produced and arranged by Warren in 1973.) This awesome Numero Records CD of never before heard 24-Carat Black material comes with a 20 page booklet. Sensational! (By the way - the members of 24-Carat Black would later turn up in the group Shotgun.)

Also available: GONE: THE PROMISES OF YESTERDAY (LP).
