One of the key albums when talking about psychedelic hard-rock and early proto-metal, originally released in 1969. Featuring the great John Du Cann (The Attack, Atomic Rooster, Hard Stuff...) on guitar plus Mick Hawksworth (Fuzzy Duck, Alvin Lee) on heavy bass plus the powerful drumming of Ian McLane (Neat Change, Ray Owen's Moon). Andromeda was formed during the final days of Du Cann's previous band The Attack, when he decided to go in a full heavier and proggier musical direction. Recruiting his friend/room mate Mick Hawksworth on bass plus drummer Jack McCulloch (of One In A Million, soon to be replaced by Ian McLane), the power-trio was born. After initial interest from John Peel (Dandelion) and Kit Lambert (Track Records), Du Cann decided to go with a major label, RCA, who offered him the chance to self-produce their first album. Recorded at Advision Studios, the impressive Andromeda debut was released in 1969, housed in a sleeve designed by John with photos by Gered Mankowitz. But despite receiving excellent reviews and the band playing lots of gigs (some of them billed above bands like Black Sabbath), RCA didn't know what to do with such a heavy rock band. Tired of the lack of promotion and support, John accepted an offer to join Atomic Rooster... but that's another story. Remastered sound. Original artwork in hard cardboard laminated sleeve. APOCALYPSE (USA) - THE CASTLE
'70s Chicago-area based band Apocalypse used their double-neck guitars to create chamber prog suites about faraway castles.
Their lost 1976 LP (used as a demo), with male/female harmonies, violin, mellotron and fuzzed-out guitars/keys has been unearthed by Steve "Plastic Crimewave" Krakow. With their lenghty and tuneful musical odysseys, Apocalypse conjures the golden mid-'70s progressive period of Renaissance, Soft Machine, ELP, Gentle Giant and Genesis. Travel back in time with the Salvatori family. Way back to 1976, when he was in high school, Tom Salvatori teamed up with older brother Michael Salvatori, Michael's wife Gail Salvatori and Tom's classmate Scott Magnesen. As Apocalypse they recorded an album of pure progressive rock magic called 'The Castle.' Although the 5-song, 38-minute demo was an amazing showcase for their collective progressive rock leanings, 'The Castle' remained an unreleased artifact until 2021 when the reel-to-reel master tape of the presumably long-lost relic was rediscovered by Michael in a dusty old basement storage bin. Music fans can be thankful that Michael's rediscovery of the Apocalypse master tape has now led to a vinyl-only reissue of 'The Castle.'

Argus were an obscure British outfit with connections to Rare Amber and Julian's Treatment. Their sound was hard-hitting bluesy hard-rock, similar to Hackensack or Killing Floor. In 1973, they recorded a five-track demo with the intention of securing a record deal which sadly never arrived. It is included here along with a few live tracks from post-Argus underground psych-prog outfit Anaconda.

Following on from 'Artifacts & Uranium' (2021) and 'Panscosmology' (2022), 'The Gateless Gate' completes this trilogy of remote experimentation. Two side long compositions, composed of organs, synths, bass, guitars, drums, h-delays and the Behringer Wasp. Side A is laid back repetition, layered guitar ascending, tremolo organs and gated synths. That descends in to horror show choir and waster feedback guitars.
Side B starts a pastoral, Popol Vuh harmonic structure of accession. Viola drones balance assist the climb courtesy of Martin Ash. Transitions in to a later period AshRa, bass lines and higher stereo delayed guitar freak-outs. Previously unreleased heavy acid-rock/proto-prog album from 1972! Asgard (initially known as Osgoode, named after the street where Blue Cheer had their headquarter) was a San Francisco band featuring ace guitar player Bob Hardy (a veteran of many Bay Area bands since the early '60s) and Jake 'Gelon' Lau (Gideon & Power, Mary McCreary, Tribe...) on electric violin and vocals. This is their lost album, registered at Roy Chen Recorders in 1972, now released for the first time. 'For Asgard' features nine original tracks, perfectly recorded and played, dominated by Bob Hardy's outstanding fuzzy lead guitar and the cool touch of Gelon's Lau electrified violin that recalls UK prog-psych bands like the similar named Asgærd or High Tide at times. Hard to believe that such a pro-recorded, top quality album like this was never released at the time. After playing a celebrated free concert at the Provo Park in Berkeley alongside bands like Mother Cat and Summerhill, the band slowly disintegrated. In October 2023, Greek label Anazitisi Records celebrates 20 years as a record label, so they proudly present the official release of the previously unissued album by Ashhollow. The band formed in 1973 in Oklahoma USA. After some personnel changes they took their final form in 1975 with Bill Kirtley: vocals, guitar, Mike Stewart: vocals, guitar, Mike Hanna: vocals, bass and Gary Bruce: drums. They played locally in clubs and concerts and had their own compositions written by all 4 members. Besides the original material (most of it, is presented here) they played a variety of covers by bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, CSN&Y, Kansas etc. Their music is ranged between hard rock with many psych underground vibes and
progressive rock with jazzy overtones. Wishbone Ash, Primevil, Majic Ship, Hard Meat, even quieter and less polished Ashbury come in mind... This album was made from an original reel-to-reel tape, recorded on January 30, 1976. All live in the studio with no overdubs. The tape contains 11 songs in total but Anazitisi used only the 9 of them because of vinyl limitations. Soon after the recordings, Ashhollow came to a halt. Includes fully laminated cover and 4-pages (LP-sized) coloured insert with bio, photos, lyrics and memorabilia.
Limited to 200 black copies, 180gr vinyl as usual.

BACCHUS - CELEBRATION
Born out from the ashes of legendary Florida garage band The Tropics (of 'As Time's Gone' fame), Bacchus was a powerful psychedelic/hard-rock/boogie power trio influenced by Cream, Hendrix, Allman Brothers et al. They only released four rare 45s, collected here for the first time. When Eric Turner (guitarist, vocalist and songwriter), grew into a more progressive form of rock music after a split from The Tropics, he teamed up with fellow Tropics bass player Charlie Souza and drummer Bill Peterson: Bacchus (named after the Roman God of wine) was born. In 1970 they opened for Cactus and Free and after the good response, they recorded their first 45, the fab hard-rock sounding 'Carry My Load.' From there they went on tour with Grand Funk Railroad around the state. After more 45 releases, Bacchus was also the opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King, The Outlaws, Redbone, Edgar Winter, and Ted Nugent. They also had the privilege to open a Florida concert for Mahavishnu Orchestra and appeared on the free stage at the Atlanta Pop Festival, just before Grand Funk Railroad on the main stage. Famous also in the recent years for appearing on one the famous 'Brown Acid' volumes, a vinyl comp of their complete output was long overdue. Here it is. PLAY LOUD! On Friday 10 March 2023, Bhajan Bhoy releases TWO separate albums on the same day. These will be Bhajan Bhoy's third and fourth albums, and a joint release on highly respected independent labels Cardinal Fuzz (UK) and Feeding Tube Records (USA). Drawing from the deep triple bad acid well of psychedelia, Bhajan Bhoy further shifts the parameters surrounding the perceptions aligned to this genre with a beautiful and meditative set of tracks. A kaleidoscopic sonic universe within which you will find raga-esque musical excursions, meditative Dream House drone, beautiful folk inflected jams on a Laurel Canyon tip, electronic dreamscapes and heavy guitar riffola where sometimes two chords are enough. Their journey started a long time ago, some say on Saturn, some say in the subconscious of the human psyche, coming out in different manners through the ages, channelled by mystics, witch doctors, shamans, free thinkers, free spirits. But we do know that what has become Codex Serafini travelled here from their home world on Enceladus in 2019 and crash landed into the music scene of Sussex. Invoking many styles of psychedelic rock from the recent human musical history to open the minds of their human audience to the other world, and higher plane. After releasing two EP's, 'Serpents Of Enceladus' in 2020 and 'Invisible Landscape' in 2021 Codex Serafini embarked on their most immersive journey so far creating what would become 'The Imprecation Of Anima' an exploration of the self, the duality of the human existence. The album is heavy, much heavier than their previous output and the albums longest song, 'Animus In Decay' is longer than either of the bands previous EP's. It snakes and weaves an epic motif through the wilderness of the sometimes barren lands of the unconsciousness, focusing the mind with it's almost heavy metal mantra and using this to open up the third eye to the realisation of our mortal existence. 'Mo - The Demon' was recorded at Leeds College of Music between November 2017 and February 2018. The basis of the album was to record an imaginary soundtrack to the Shaw Brothers bat shit psychedicrazy Kung Fu horror 'The Boxer's Omen' aka 'MO' or 'Demon'. The story is an everyday one. After a Hong Kong kick boxer is paralysed by a cheating Thai competitor, his mobster brother vows revenge and journeys to Thailand for a duel. Along the way, our hero is met by bizarre visions, entered into a Buddhist monastery, and begins a quest to save the soul of a deceased monk (his twin brother in a past life) who died at the hands of a powerful black magician. We've all been there. However the movie descends into a kind of spiritual Jodorowsky mushroom fest that is completely deranged and is therefore one of those perfect midnight movies. Then, invited back in February at LCM, the band decided to record 2 stand alone pieces, 'Spring Snow' and 'Jetavina Grove' and bring all their space rock elements and psych raga back into the fray. Throw in some super cool Korean vocals courtesy of Bomi Seo of Tirikiliatops and run the guitars through a harmonizer H910 (as used by Visconti on 'Low' an 'Heroes') and it's the perfect swansong to their last 14 years of playing live and recording together. Limited to 400 copies on translucent violet coloured vinyl, house in a sleeve with mind bending artwork.

Falling Floors is a psych-rock three piece, formed in the pandemic out of a desire for distraction from dark times and an unending stream of shit news (seriously, what the fuck is going on?) There's no master plan, no grand ambition, no product-market fit, just a shared love of '60s psych, '70s rock, and the fearless, genre-less experimentation of Krautrock and early prog to get us through. Riding the trans-Pennine underground (up the hill and out of the crags, down there, you know?), you can hear magical sounds coming out of the Valley. On a cold and wet Calderdale winter, the band recorded their self-titled first album, DIY, live, in two days in Hebden Bridge. Rawness not perfection and feel over finesse were the aims. This album, a trans-Atlantic joint release by Riot Season (UK) and Echodelick (US), lives by slips, fuck-ups, and simple, joyous expression. Falling Floors is Rob Herian (ex-feral stoner rockers Early Mammal) on guitar and vocals, Harry Wheeler (no ravers The Family Elan) on bass and keys, and Colin Greenwood (ex-shoegaze folk rockers No Sorrows) on drums. It's no one's project, and no one's in charge. But there's enough in common to keep it honest. Limited to 300 copies on clear vinyl.

Limited repress on black vinyl, be fast! Osaka based psych-rock three piece Hibushibire return after a long break, with a new line up and a stunning third album. Following the successes of their debut album 'Freak Out Orgasm!' (2017), the follow up 'Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out' (2019) and two very well received UK tours. The band headed home to Osaka, Japan and then, the pandemic hit. During this downtime, guitarist/vocalist Changchang decided to create a new power trio. Enter Tetsuji Toyoda (bass/vocals) and Aoi Hama (drums/vocals). The new trio have spent the last three years writing new music, playing live and honing their sound in Japan, and a short well received tour of Taiwan with Riot Season labelmates Dope Purple. And now finally, Hibushibire mark 2 is born properly. "Hibushibire has returned after a change of members. A psychedelic, progressive work, suitable for a new beginning." Entering the studio with Acid Mothers Temple/Mainliner guru Makoto Kawabata in the producer chair (and also as a guest musician) once again, the band recorded album number three, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye.' Makoto also adds some of his own trademark guitar howls through out the album, perfectly complimenting Changchang's own growing prowess. Here the band have taken their trademark psych-rock blasts and blended them perfectly with some more trippy, dare I say sweet progressive psychedelic sounds. "The idea of this album is based on the theme of "occultism and mysticism." But it's not a serious thing, it's about the things we like (UFOs, pyramids, psychic phenomena, shamanism etc) and we all had fun while making it. In terms of what makes it different from the previous Hibushibire albums, it's where Aoi Hama's vocals are present. I had wanted to use a female vocalist for a long time, so it was a good feeling!" Like the band's first two albums, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye' is very much an album of two halves. Side one again is full of killer shorter tracks, while side two is reserved for a blinding majestic 20 minute epic 'Ayahuasca Witch Abduction.' Perhaps the biggest musical surprise here though is probably track two, the beautifully mellow tripped out 'We Won't Go Back To The Past,' which sounds like it's been beamed straight out of the late '60s/early '70s.
The band also tip a nod to the Beatles psychedelic classic 'Tomorrow Never Ever Knows,' but with their own twist of course. It's clear with the line up changes, Changchang has decided to expand the band's musical pathway, and he's achieved stunning results.

The wonderfully named Kevin, are a three-piece band formed in Osaka, Japan in 2017. The line up at the time of recording/releasing this debut album 'Aftermath' consists of Hayato Izawa (vocal), Yutaro Umemoto (guitar) and Yuichi Umemoto (drums). The band has been influenced by psychedelic rock, krautrock, folk music and free jazz. But Kevin are less full on psych-rock than some of their Japanese contemporaries (and new label mates) like Acid Mothers Temple, Mainliner and Hibushibire. The strong krautrock influence is more prominent in their unique sound. Taking influence from the likes of Can and This Heat. Their sound was initially based on noise music. In 1969 Bracknell based blues rock outfit Levee Camp Moan released what was destined to become one of the most sought after UK private pressings of the period. Issued on the County Recording Services label (SVVS 132), a small run of discs was pressed up and sold locally at gigs as well as being handed out to friends. Housed in an obligatory custom built sleeve that had a snapshot of the group pasted onto the front, this LP marked out their status as one of the most exciting bands to emerge out of the thriving local underground scene in the Bracknell Delta. The group had taken their name from the old blues number and the band members, manager and assorted roadies took up residence in a local farmhouse known as Peacock Farm. It was there that LCM would rehearse into the small hours thumping out a mixture of blues standards as well as their own compositions until they had become a tight unit ready to 'take on the world'. Influences ranged from the urban blues of Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells to Muddy Waters, Skip James and beyond. The more or less contemporary white blues of the time, Canned Heat, Savoy Brown and Paul Butterfield also served as a major source of inspiration. From their humble roots LCM quickly built up a following on the British Blues circuit, frequenting the likes of the Marquee, Crawdaddy, Klooks Kleek, Eel Pie Island and Rikki Tik club. On the college circuit they toured extensively with Chickenshack, Canned Heat and Muddy Waters with performances being of a high enough standard to generate record company interest. Unable to secure a record deal, they had no other choice but to do it themselves. And so it was in the winter months of early '69 that LCM entered Virgin Sound in nearby Windsor to lay down eight tracks recorded on a four track machine. At the time of its creation the term private pressing would have had little or no relevance in musical circles and the significant thing to remember is that in such cases there is no record company interference and what the band was able to produce under these conditions was the archetypal private pressing, raw, under produced and thrillingly primitive. The project successfully captured the spirit and aggression of an exciting new band and the original artefact is now a zeitgeist of that remarkable era. After Levee Camp Moan, Ian Campbell went on to carve out a busy musical career performing with, amongst many others, the Nashville Teens, Arthur Brown's band and Mungo Jerry. Bassist Dave Stubbs played with a host of notables including gigs in Eric Clapton's band and lengthy tours with Uli Jon Roth (ex Scorpions). This is the first, legitimate vinyl reissue of this extraordinarily rare album. Includes insert with rare photos and full band history by Pete Sarfas.

In early February 2022, Junzo fell from a train platform in Tokyo and was rendered unconscious. Junzo suffered intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage. He regained consciousness about nine days later and was moved to a rehabilitation hospital several weeks after. His friends and fans have got together to create a digital fundraiser album to help him pay off his medical bills.
"Everybody who meets Suzuki Junzo loves the guy. Everybody who has seen him live drops their jaw on the floor. So when this February he suffered a intracerebral hemorrhage and a subarachnoid hemorrhage everyone was very worried. Junzo is now in a rehabilitation hospital and unable to tour or record music. Proceeds from this compilation will all go towards helping him financially but we want this to do more than that. This album is also one giant get well card, a huge sign of love from the world to Junzo. We love you Junzo and we know you got this but we're all there cheering for you every step of the way."

SABATTIS - WARNING IN THE SKY
Repress in hard cardboard sleeve. Sabattis were an underground hard-rock band from New York formed in 1968 by Jim Marvin (guitar & lead vocals), Gary Culotta (keyboard and vocals), Larry Wegman (drums) and Rocky Kaler (bass). Influenced by bands like Deep Purple, Mountain and Grand Funk, they gigged around town playing lot of psychedelic clubs and venues. In 1970, they recorded a demo with the intention of securing a record deal which never came. The demo tape was in fact a fully finished album recorded and engineered by a friend from the band, Mick Gauzaski, who despite using a homemade studio, managed to obtain a real pro sound. No wonder Mick is now a multiple winner Grammy award! The Sabattis demo remained unreleased until 2011 when Jargon Records discovered the tapes and put out a CD edition with the band's involvement. This reissue of 'Warning In The Sky' is remastered from the original tapes and includes an insert with rare photos and liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby). Sabbatis' sound is powerful heavy-psych sound with swirling Hammond organ and hard guitar which brings to mind other obscure acts like Jungle.

SIX long years after the release of their, some might say classic sophomore album 'Deep Mountain', the worlds most reclusive sludge rockers Sloath return with their imaginatively titled third album 'III'. 'III' is conceived in a burst of activity around Christmas 2014. Geographical displacement and a slimming of the ranks necessitate an economy of style - a streamlining of the group's already minimalist approach. Grooves tauten as ballast turns to muscle. The new songs blow the roof off a packed gig in their former home town and the group scatter once more. They reconvene in the spring of 2015 to play the Raw Power festival in London, and triumph in spite of failing equipment. Shortly thereafter, the new suite is recorded with Tim Cedar (Part Chimp etc) at Dropout in Camberwell. Again the band disperse. The recordings mature in an old oak whisky barrel. It will be four years before the group can gain perspective on the scale of the "new" LP and complete the tortuous mixing process. 'III' is finally handed in to Riot Season in the autumn of 2019. Sloath have existed since 2007. Their music is a synthesis of classic rock, minimalism and extreme volume. They have shared stages with Bardo Pond, Om and Hey Colossus. They currently reside in Kent, London, Berlin and Zaragoza. Their two previous LPs, 'Sloath' (2010) and 'Deep Mountain' (2014) were also released on Riot Season.

Taras Bulba was formed by Fred Laird and Jon Blacow. Taking a new direction from their last musical outfit Earthling Society, the duo embarked on an inner space mission for new age ideas, rhythmic mantras, ambient landscapes and creative micro dosing. The album is a pot-pouri of Eastern/Asian sounds, krautrock rhythms, ambient landscapes, psychedelic blues and Orb inspired dub. TARAS BULBA - SOMETIMES THE NIGHT
The third release from Fred Laird (Earthling Society) was recorded during the period June 2020 and January 2021 on 24trk home studio recording. It is also the first album recorded purely as a solo artist with the occasional guest and draws more from a roots style music (trad it isn't) than previous more psychedelic releases. 'Inspiration for the album came from listening to the self-recorded primal music of Hasil Adkins and the first solo Link Wray album for Polydor. The idea of these guys just doing what they wanted back of beyond seemed more akin to me sat in a box room during lockdown feeding off a diet of Billy Chong Kung Fu horror flicks, David Lynch, Noir crime movies, Jean Cocteau and the works of Yukio Mishima. Musically the sound draws form early Bad Seeds or Crime & The City Solution, Gallon Drunk, Bohren And Der Club Of Gore, The Cramps, Hasil Adkins and various other trash inspired twilight creatures. I also wanted to try and create that spooky organ sound that dominates the midnight movie classic 'Carnival Of Souls', so there's quite a lot of organ and piano going on. I also got my hands on a baritone guitar to give the songs more of a deep growly twang!
Vocals are provided by Daisy Atkinson for the Jean Cocteau dedication 'Orphee' which is the nearest thing to a pop song on the album and the echoey almost Sister Lover's sound of the title track. I got sick of my own shit voice and I just thought a female voice would give it a more fragile ethereal vibe. Mike Blatchford provides formidable saxophone to the album's last three tracks which were recorded on his mobile phone 300 miles away and synched into the music. The big blasted swing blues of 'The Big Duvall' is a dedication to Andy Duvall of Carlton Melton - a big guy who needed a big song. Who knows how big the song could have been in a proper studio. I could have dedicated it to John Wayne but Wayne couldn't chop down trees with his bare hands like Andy can...' Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl.

Revealing top notch production and superb musicianship, 'Jungle Lady' saw the light in two different pressings: the original white label LIPS vinyl from 1974 is the first edition, and the red LIPS label issue contains a later remix done in Nashville, possibly around 1975. This Out-sider reissue is taken from the remix version, as that one's way "hotter" than the original pressing. It features sound from the master tapes and includes an insert with detailed liner notes and photos.

'Väistyy Mielen Yö,' the third album of the Finnish prog band Viima was slowly worked on for 12 years, sometimes with a closer pace and sometimes with a break of several years. Some changes in the line-up took place during these years. Keyboardist Kimmo Lähteenmäki left the band in 2011, but his playing can be heard on a couple of tracks on the album. His successor, Eric Marquis, was present at Viima's concerts. Next, Risto Pahlama, who is present on this album, took over the keyboards and the duties of the lead vocalist after Hannu Hiltula moved more in the background. As before, Hannu Hiltula (flute, keyboards, backing vocals), Mikko Uusi-Oukari (guitars, Mellotron) and Mikko Väärälä (drums, vocals, keyboards) are responsible for the compositions on this '70s spirit album. Aapo Honkanen plays bass. The lyrics were written by Petri Hyytiä and Mikko Väärälä.

The Aints! had formed initially to celebrate the 40th anniversary of '(I'm) Stranded', Kuepper's first release and the debut album by The Saints, the band he had co-founded in 1973 and who courted international acclaim and infamy for their trio of classic and influential albums including '(I'm) Stranded' plus 'Eternally Yours' and 'Prehistoric Sounds' before the usual "musical differences' reared it's ugly head forcing the band to split late in 1978.

Johnny's words about this recording: "Living in Spain I have found myself playing a lot of solo concerts all throughout Spain and into Europe, so I had the idea to record a bunch of songs in this more intimate stripped back way. I went into Estudio Tigruss in Els Poblets Spain with nothing more than a guitar and a handful of ideas in my hands and mind, I sat down in front of the microphone and started singing and playing almost exactly as I do when I play solo, 3 or 4 hours later I had recorded 12 songs in a live performance kinda way. The original live recordings were sounding good but I as I usually do I decided that I wanted to add an extra guitar part here and there (for better or for worse it's what guitar players do right??) that led to me adding a bunch of different guitars , some bass and some percussion and finally asking a new friend Hendrik Rover from the legendary Los Deltonos to play some pedal steel on the songs (I had recently worked with Hendrik while I was producing a record for the wonderful Los Chicos, and I found Hendrik not only great to work with but I also found we traveled in similar spaces musically speaking) . The adding of the extra instruments was a little like treading a fine line because I did not want to lose the original intimate, raw bare bones live feel but just to "flesh" the performances out a little, to open them up sonically speaking, make them more landscape as opposed to portrait. What you have here is a collection of songs, yours and mine, and the vibrations that travel through them and connect all or at least some of us."

The Jack Cades formed in 2017 when their first mini LP was recorded at North Down Sound in Kent, UK. At this time it was just two people (Mike & Elsa) wanting to record a few songs they had written. They asked Mole (State Records, The Embrooks) to join them on drums and John Gibbs (The Masonics, Wildebeests) to join them on bass for the session. Their sound is raw, influenced by rhythm n' blues and '60s garage punk.
When they decided to carry on as a band, this required a full time bass player at which point they brought in Alexandra Cools (Speedball Jr.) and The Jack Cades were born. The band has always been hugely influenced by the sounds of the '60s, mainly US garage and UK beat bands from that time, but they are also influenced by a wide range of bands from different eras, some more modern, such as The Stone Roses for example. In April 2019, they decided to go record the 11 songs that would form the album 'Perfect View' with Liam Watson at Toe Rag Records in London. Liam completely understood what they were trying to achieve. The result is powerful, listen, and you will see!

The Sparkles were associated with the garage-band and psychedelic rock scene of 1960s Texas, as epitomized by their classic underground hit 'No Friend Of Mine'. The line-up changed few times before 1962, and Stanley Smith finally recruit Harold "Lucky" Floyd (drums and vocals), Donnie Roberts (guitar) and Bobby Smith (bass). Their first recording was the single 'U.T.' under the small label Caron. This third incarnation proved a great hit among the clubs of West Texas, notably the Music Box and The Village Swinger. Indeed, in 2000, local legend Joe Ely described them as the "city's best rock'n'roll band" in the history of the Lubbock music scene published by Texas Monthly. Interestingly, The Sparkles boasted a pair of drummers, with one, the flamboyant Harold Floyd, also
lending his voice to their performances. 1966 would constitute a turning point for The Sparkles. Larry Parks -drummer for Roy Orbison, turned producer in Nashville, Tennessee- invited them to sign with Hickory Records, the historic music label founded
by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose in 1954. The band came up with 'The Hip', which proved an immediate hit in Austin and extremely popular within the fraternity scene at the University of Texas. On a roll, The Sparkles then recorded 'Something You Said' followed by 'Jack And The Beanstalk'. In 1967, The Sparkles, already a decade old, recorded their chef-d'oeuvre 'No Friend Of Mine', with Nunn's raging guitar riffs and Floyd's remarkably tense vocals. This fiery tour de force would be consecrated by its inclusion on the first CD set of the legendary compilation 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968'. Following their final single, 'Hipsville 29 B.C.', for Hickory Records, The Sparkles once again entered rocky waters, with Nunn and Holt finally deciding to throw in the towel in 1968. Floyd, Smith and Marriot immediately set sail for California, along the way renaming their group The Pearly Gate. This brief interlude would include a handful of appearances on the ABC sitcom 'Judd, For The Defense'. Legend has it, they were also scheduled to perform before Bobby Kennedy the evening of his tragic
assassination on June 5th 1968... Returning to Texas, Floyd, Smith and Marriot resurrected The Sparkles, bringing into the fold Steve Weisberg, future guitarist for John Denver. Following the 'Voices Super Sound' compilation, El Vidocq wanted to continue to explore vocals, vocal harmonies and choirs... a doo wop theme, or gospel, or even choirs? Ultimately it has become a bit of all that, always with the idea of making a great record that is good to listen to from start to finish. Here we rediscover well-known groups like The Turbans, The Five Keys, Tiny Topsy & The Charms, but also many having only made one single such as acts like The Chanteurs, Avalons, The Lidos, Mad Lads and The Moon Stones. Some sang with religious convictions, like Evelyn Freeman; others had other musical directions like The Visions and The Paramours. But all have in common a lot of generosity in their songs and also a lot of "boom boom" of "wop wop" of "ouh ouuuhhh."
To summarize, as the opening track says "come on everybody yeah, now, yeaheah.."
