Repress! The sole LP by Brazilian quartet Assim Assado, originally released in 1974 by the CID-label, gets reissued on vinyl. Even the androgynous element is present! Assim Assado was led by Miguel de Deus, formerly of Os Brazoes. RIDING EASY		 BAND X - THE BEST OF BAND X

RSD 2024 release, only few available, so be fast! With its tongue in cheek title, 'The Best Of Band X' (there had been no previous Band X releases) snuck into the record racks in 1976, the first the world was to hear from musician/producer/writer/arranger (and later all-American hero) Craig Peyton. Fitting in somewhere between contemporaries like Weather Report, Headhunters and Stone Alliance, Craig Peyton definitely ploughed his own musical furrow even in an exceptionally fertile era. Originally a jazz drummer and vibraphonist, Craig was interested in utilizing the potential of some of the new synthesizers that were coming onto the market in that era, (beating even Stevie Wonder to the use of the Fairlight keyboard). Band X consisted of Alan Grzyb, Victor Preston and Joey Bellomo alongside their auteur, Craig Peyton. Despite being, broadly speaking, `jazz', Craig's music had a synthetic feel and, like many musical conceptions of the future, sounds decidedly retro-cool today. Drummer Bellomo contributed synthesizer work, and horn-player Grzyb also contributed keyboards. Bass-man Preston also played trombone, and alongside Grzyb's bassoon and clarinet and the assorted electronics, it was not your standard jazz ensemble. Quirky song titles (some of which wouldn't sound out of place on a prog-rock album from the same time) confirm the image we have of a musical maverick.

For their third Born Bad album, Cyril Cyril have invited two lads from Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, Inès Mouzoune, multi-instrumentalist from Amami, and Violeta Garcia's cello. Genosidra, aka Carlos Quebrada, who crafts club delicacies in Bogotá, mixed heavy, full gravy, a challenge given the quantity of material, recorded as a family affair at Insub Studio. On the ruins of Switzerland, people dance hard but consciously, and won't complain about them having a go at the homeland - notably in 'Swetzerland Bunker Love,' where they claim it's time to "free the money from the banks." There's something rotten in the state, wherever it may be, and they prefer to put its fall to music. And they're not shy about it, either: this album features heavy guitar/drums text-driven ballads, polyrhythmic noisy drum splatter with crafty vocal knitting, deconstructed and harmonically ambitious compositions, and Latino frog croaks, because yes, why not. Since their previous efforts 'Certaine Ruines' and 'Yallah Mickey Mouse,' it turns out that the future isn't working out so badly for the two Cyrils, who each have a label to run. Bongo Joe for Yeterian, Insub for Bondi - who also beats the drum for La Tène in his rare spare time. And that's not counting with their supergroup Yalla Miku (with Hyperculte, Anouar Baouna, Ali Boushaki and Samuel Ades). Quietly sitting on crates of records, they patiently build their sound. Never tired of sick networks and never-ending struggles, Cyril Cyril live is a rousing mess, shouting out the common spleen while still managing to have a good laugh. Their album 'Chapter II: The Deal' was released in 2019. They are considered pioneers of Dutch speed/thrash metal. Burning, from the province of Groningen, has been active for ten years, releasing two full albums and one EP. They have shared the stage with notable names in the metal scene. ...LES ÉDITIONS POPULAIRES - After the anniversary edition about the illustrious Ngoma label, Planet Ilunga moves forward in time with this release. With the new series 'Les Éditeurs Congolais' Planet Ilunga aims to honour and highlight the phonographic and entrepreneurial work of the first Congolese record label bosses. They kick off with a compilation of one of the most significant labels, Les Éditions Populaires, founded by Franco Luambo Makiadi. 'Indépendance Cha Cha' was an historic song, not only because it immortalized Congo's independence in its lyrics, but also because it was the first single published by a Congolese-owned record label. Joseph Kabasele's label Surboum African Jazz indeed paved the way for several Congolese musicians to become record publishers. It resulted in the 1960s in a plethora of newly found Kinshasa-based record labels, run by the biggest musicians of the time. Les Éditions Populaires was founded by Franco in 1968 after he first co-founded with Vicky Longomba the labels Epanza Makita (+/- 117 singles) and Boma Bango (+/- 50 singles) and after starting his first short-lived label Likembe (+/- 5 singles). It ran until 1982 and was mostly dedicated to the output of O.K. Jazz (later T.P.O.K. Jazz). This compilation brings together an original selection of 16 tracks from the first three years of Les Éditions Populaires. They are a showcase of the sound Franco had envisioned for his band. The focus was less on cha-cha-cha and Spanish lyrics, but on lingering rumba and bolero ballads in Lingala, tradition-rooted songs in Kikongo, Kimongo and even Yoruba, collaborations with Ngoma artists Camille Feruzi and Manuel d'Oliveira and not to forget solid tributes to American funk, which were showing that the O.K. Jazz musicians had an open-minded view on music and were capable of excelling in many genres.

For the second instalment in Mr Bongo's 'Cuban Classics' series, here's a sought-after slice of sublime Afro-Cuban jazz from 1976. It comes courtesy of one of Cuba's most influential acts, Grupo Irakere. Founded in 1973 by Chucho Valdés (son of the Cuban pianist and bandleader Bebo Valdés) the group was home to many of Cuba's finest musicians over the years. With an electrifying style and sound, they mixed traditional Cuban music with jazz, funk, and rock. This self-titled album includes the much-loved, dancefloor heavy-hitter 'Chequeré-Son,' a Latin-jazz funk masterpiece with Cubanized bebop-flavoured horn lines, lush keys, and '70s hip swagger. Though 'Chequeré-Son' is the keystone of the record, the album is laced with brilliance at every turn, from the Carlos Santana-esque channelling 'Iya' with its percussive Latin power, to the sultry, slick and passionate '38 1/2.' Elsewhere, the absorbing, ever-building energy of 'Juana 1600' and steamy vocal dancer `Xiomara' are also highlights of this incredible album. Pressed on Cuba's state led Areito Records, the album was well received internationally, garnering distribution in Finland on Love Records, in Italy on Phase 6 Super Stereo, and also in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela. A cherished Afro-Cuban triumph, this album has been crying out for a reissue and Mr Bongo is delighted to make that happen. Maria Rita Stumpf is a musical pioneer that was ahead of her time. On first hearing her song, 'Cântico Brasileiro No.3 (Kamaiurá),' Mr Bongo thought it sounded like a contemporary remix that an artist such as Carl Craig could have produced. In fact, it came out in 1988 and was taken from Maria's 'Brasileira' album, released on the Brazilian, independent Acorde imprint. The song would go on to gain cult status with its inclusion on John Gomez's superb 'Outro Tempo' compilation, released on the Music From Memory label in 2017. The album fuses new-age electronics with indigenous vocals and Amazonian rhythms. It is beautiful and unique and takes you on a journey through different moods, textures and ethereal planes. Alberto Baldan Bembo (1938-2017), also known as "Ali" Ben Djamballa, Bedan, Blue Marvin or Shorty Baldan, was a multi-instrumentalist (vibraphonist, organist and pianist). Since 1959 he has been part of the group I Menestrelli del Jazz and in 1963 he joined Bruno De Filippi's group. Appreciated as a sideman, he was for several years pianist and organist in the group that accompanied the Italian singer Mina. He has also spent much of his career as a composer of film soundtracks and published several albums through the SAAR label, among which the soundtrack of 'Codice D'Amore Orientale,' released by SAAR/Joker in 1974. 'The Soul Of "Ali" Ben Djamballa' (1974) is a highly sought after LP by record collectors around the world. Following the creation of the Afro-flavored funk of this period, represented by Fela Kuti (Nigeria) and Osibisa (Ghana), the album features European Library Music grooves, including 'Blue Jeans,' 'Black Coffee,' 'Take Six' and 'Niger.' The record contains a number of solid breaks, noteworthy sampling material and a good dose of rare and funky grooves.

The first and most well-known is the early outfit featuring vocals from Cyril Davies and Long John Baldry. Also featured is the group that was together from late 1963 to early '65, fronted by experienced black American vocalist Herbie Goins. Finally we hear the band during the mid-'65 to '66 era, when the band was fronted by Alexis Korner himself.

'Virus' is a 1980 horror movie directed by Bruno Mattei -here under the pseudonym of Vincent Dawn- and Claudio Fragasso that was explicitly made to benefit the success of the zombie/cannibalistic genre achieved by films such as George Romero's 'Zombi'/'Dawn Of The Dead' (1978) or Lucio Fulci's 'Zombi 2' (1979). Today, together with many others rediscovered and revalued in recent years, 'Virus' is a true cult among the many fans of underground, `artisanal' and extremely low-budget cinema. For entire decades this soundtrack has never officially been released, up until 2022, and this is the first vinyl edition ever. The score of 'Virus' alternates Luis Bacalov's 'Diamanti Rossi' (the theme of the noir 'Diamanti Sporchi Di Sangue'/'Blood And Diamonds,' 1977) with Goblin tracks taken from 'Zombi,' 'Contamination' and 'Buio Omega,' and also with original compositions especially written for this film, credited to producer and composer Gianni Dell'Orso; the latter, extremely effective in their simplicity, are largely characterized by tribal percussion instruments, with a great use of electronic background sounds and effects. 'Allonsanfàn' is a 1974 historical film written and directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani; set in 1816 in Italy during the Restoration period, its cast features, among others, Marcello Mastroianni, Lea Massari, Laura Betti and Mimsy Farmer. 'Allonsanfàn' is the first collaboration between the two directors and Morricone, who would also compose the music for the film 'Il Prato' ('The Meadow,' 1979). The soundtrack starts with a main marching theme, 'Rabbia E Tarantella,' introduced by the piano and reworked in a thrilling way by the full orchestra; Giuseppe Tornatore liked it so much that in 2009 he asked Morricone to write a similar musical theme for a sequence of the film 'Baar¨a.' This motif is alternated with the bucolic passages for flute and orchestra of 'Ritorno A Casa,' the festive 'Dirindindin,' the classical piece 'Te Deum Laudamus' for orchestra and choir and 'Frammenti Di Sonata' for solo violin and small ensemble. This score was only partially issued on vinyl in 1979, and subsequently only on CD; for the first time, then, it's here released on clear red vinyl in an extended version, including a 30x30cm insert. 'L'Arcangelo' ('The Archangel') is a 1969 comedy characterised by police and judiciary tones, directed by Giorgio Capitani and starring, among others, Vittorio Gassman, Pamela Tiffin, Adolfo Celi, Irina Demick and Carlo Delle Piane. This soundtrack follows the previous 'La Notte E Fatta Per... Rubare' ('The Night Is Made For Stealing') which marked the beginning of Umiliani's collaboration with the director. Mainly displaying a Latin American flavour, it contains several elements typical of the composer's style, mixing bossa nova and samba with beat rhythms and Hammond organ, and is enriched by various vocal contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni's Cantori Moderni and the delightful scat singing of Giulia De Mutiis, one of the choir's female voices. Distorted electric guitars with orchestral ensemble also create an atmosphere between spy and detective story. None of 'The Archangel' tracks have ever been released in any form for many years, and to date there are only three CD editions only issued in Japan. This clear yellow vinyl version therefore fills a void and finally returns these wonderful compositions to us in the format that suits them best!
