'Suikyo' documents a first-time meeting between three Japanese improvisers: Takashi Masubuchi on guitar and harmonica, Ayami Suzuki on voice and electronics, and Tomo on hurdy-gurdy. Recorded at Permian on the 29th of January, 2023, it's a stunning, forty-minute long improvisation of rare artistic sympathy. Notably, it was the first time the trio had performed together, though Masubuchi and Suzuki have prior performed as a duo; on the evening itself, the trio performance was preceded by solo sets from Suzuki and Tomo, which served as a kind of introduction, of sorts, to the broader aesthetic visions of two of the musicians on 'Suikyo.'

This incredibly rare release predates their more widely-known second album, 'Mice And Rats In The Loft.' This is superb psych-folk dated 1969. Jan Dukes De Grey started out as a duo of two multi-instrumentalists, Michael Bairstow and Derek Noy, who stood midway between Tyrannosaurus Rex and Jethro Tull with very short all-acoustic songs with strange lyrics. Similar to early Incredible String Band or Mark Fry, with a touch of Comus weirdness. A mixture of trippy and stoned songs and instrumentals with eastern feel. A unique album. One of the most brilliant acoustic experiments of folk-psych-prog rock ever.

BORN TO KILL		 S.O.A. - NO POLICY LP

State Of Alert (aka S.O.A.) was a hardcore punk band formed in 1980 in Washington DC by vocalist Henry Garfield (aka Henry Rollins) along with Wendel Blow (bass), Michael Hampton (guitar), and Simon Jacobson (drums), the latter 3 being former members of a local band called The Extorts (Extorts vocalist Lyle Preslar went on to join Minor Threat). The band played a handful of local shows and put out a 7" EP before disbanding in 1981 when Henry left to join Black Flag. This compiles the well known State Of Alert - 'No Policy' 7" EP on Dischord records and the songs lifted from the 'Flex Your Head' compilation, also released on Dischord records. But the best part are the demo, live tracks and the pre-State Of Alert band demo from the Extorts.

Depressive Silence was founded by RAL and B.S. from Mightiest in 1994. The band is one of the cult acts and forerunners of the dungeon synth genre alongside Mortiis and Jim Kirkwood. Back then, the genre wasn't even called dungeon synth yet, and only later got that monicker, probably named after Mortiis' label Dark Dungeon Music. At first it was just dark ambient. Nonetheless it was already something special in that it combined elements from black metal (more visually rather than musically) and fantasy into a new style that appealed to some black metal fans as well as those who preferred keyboard music and role playing games. Once the name dungeon synth had been established the appeal to (black) metal fans became much greater and the genre really took off, with Depressive Silence as one of the most beloved and well known bands of this rapidly growing genre. It is a great honour for Northern Silence to be able to reissue all of Depressive Silence's material, remastered for optimal sound, and for the first time ever with exclusive artworks by master artist David Thiérée. Before coming to Europe, in 1970, pianist Manuel Villarroel was a vet in his native Chili. A few years later, as leader of the Machi Oul Big Band, he returned to the animal kingdom. A very specific kind of animal, for sure, the Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Feathered Serpent. What is behind this title (also the name of one of the three original compositions on this album released on the Palm label in 1976), is first and foremost a sort of homecoming... After discovering the jazz of Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Villarroel was taken by the free jazz which was all the rage at the time in America and Europe, and this would inspire the first version of his Matchi-Oul project. This was a septet, with which the pianist would record, in 1971, the tremendous 'Terremoto' (re-released by Souffle Continu FFL085). After this masterstroke Villarroel was invited to record with Perception ('Perception & Friends') and with Baikida Carroll ('Orange Fish Tears'). While these were notable contributions, Villarroel was already looking into other combinations. "I had to deal personally with my situation as an expatriate, without disavowing it. I tried not to betray my roots, I tried to translate into my music what was essential to me, to reflect my origins - Latin America, its musical and above all human feelings - while remaining faithful to jazz, which is the mode of expression of the musicians in the group". This then is the 'homecoming' mentioned, which would incite Manuel Villarroel to compose what he would call "structured free music." In January 1972 the pianist enlarged his formation to reach the size of a real big band: the Septet became the Machi Oul Big Band. Three years later in January 1975, with producer Jef Gilson at the helm, fifteen musicians including those from the old Septet (Jef Sicard, François and Jean-Louis Méchali, Gérard Coppéré) worked on a rare form of jazz. From togetherness to dissonance, we dance to it 'Bolerito' then shake it up on 'Leyendas De Nahuelbuta.' As for the concluding serpent, it is a piece which is impossible to pin down: 'Quetzalcoatl' is as impressive as it is difficult to grasp. To remind ourselves of this, let's listen to it again.

To abandon animals for music - and avant-garde jazz at that -, could seeming shocking to some people. However, it is exactly what Manuel Villarroel did, as he was a vet for three years before leaving his native Chili for Europe and a career in music. And though the animals may have suffered, the world of music can be grateful. Born in 1944, Manuel Villarroel lent an ear to the best pianists from North America: Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner then Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor. Manuel left Santiago in September 1970 to participate in the Contemporary Music Workshop in Berlin. To pursue his musical career, he rapidly decided to remain in Europe. The following year in Paris, Manuel began a quartet with saxophonist Jef Sicard (who would also play with his brother Patricio, in the Dharma Quintet). But the group would rapidly expand: Villarroel and Sicard added Gérard Coppéré (saxophone), William Treve (trombone), François Méchali (bass) and Jean-Louis Méchali (drums). And with the arrival of Sonny Grey, a Jamaican trumpeter heard ten years earlier with Daniel Humair, the Matchi-Oul Septet was complete. Complete and ready: on May 8th, 1971, Matchi-Oul was in the studio for Gérard Terronès' Futura label. The septet recorded seven of the pianist's compositions. A succession of tracks which flow magically from one to the next: from the first drum strokes to the last deep notes of the bass, the successive waves roll over the piano and whistle through the wind instruments. And when they all come together it gives even greater force to Villarroel's beautiful songs. 'Terremoto' is a masterpiece of collective expression: but what else could we expect from a "supergroup" of this stature?

Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama during 1914, Sun Ra first emerged on the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. One of the great avant-garde composers of his generation - leading the way on piano, organ, and (eventually) synthesizer - beginning in the mid-1950s and lasting until his death in 1993, led the Arkestra, a band through which a near countless number of important artists passed and collaborated with, and many remained for the duration of their careers, notably Marshall Allen, John Gilmore and June Tyson. Known for their wild costumes and theatrics, Ra's eccentric image and claims that he was from Saturn was deeply political, imagining an alternate social order, history, and future for African Americans that rests as a pioneering force in the Afro-Futurist movement. While Sun Ra and his Arkestra can best be located within the broader movements of avant-garde jazz - particularly as innovators of free and spiritual jazz in their evolving forms - the composer was notoriously hard to pin down on creative terms. He was a visionary titan whose work traversed nearly half of the 20th Century, continuously pushing the idiom of jazz at every turn, ingesting and incorporating the entire history African American music - the blues, R&B, soul, gospel, ragtime, hot jazz, swing, bebop, free jazz, and fusion, etc. - into his work, without any division or hierarchy, producing roughly 100 full lengths bear his name, beginning with 1957's 'Jazz By Sun Ra Vol. 1,' and stretching well beyond his death in 1993. Despite how much was captured and released, remarkably, rare and previously unheard recordings continue to emerge and amaze. Recorded live at Teatro Giulio Cesare on March 28, 1980, comprising an astounding 27 compositions, including the highly celebrated 'Astro Black,' 'Mr. Mystery,' 'Romance Of Two Planets,' 'Space Is the Place,' 'We Travel The Spaceways,' and 'Calling Planet Earth,' over six vinyl sides. High among the greatest live gigs by the Arkestra captured on tape, carefully mastered by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, 'Live In Rome 1980' is a near perfect snapshot of the band's versatility and range, including many of their most notably and famous songs, as well as striking renditions of the Horace Henderson penned Benny Goodman number 'Big John's Special,' Fletcher Henderson's 'Yeah Man!,' and 'Limehouse Blues,' displaying Ra's willingness to address and rework the entire, diverse history of jazz in a single go. Heard in its totality, perhaps what makes 'Live In Rome 1980' most striking is the way in which the concert plays out. Roughly the first half encounters the band locked in some of the most out-there, free jazz fire that can be imagined, weaving a startling sense of interplay and furious energy into a brilliant tapestry of writhing sonority, the likes of which were only really achieved by this band. The second half, with only moments of exception that return to the furious energy of the first, is very different affair, easy toward the vocal standards, led by June Tyson's vocals and the joyous collective chanting of the band, for which they have become so widely celebrated, threading the sounds of off-kilter big band swing with heavy grooves and imagines of outer space.
