After winning the first prize at a couple of major music festivals and even sharing stage with Pink Floyd, they started recording their first album. Combining interesting cover versions (the LP opens with a monster heavy cover of Procol Harum's 'Repent Walpurgis') and original songs, the album is a perfect example of the transition from beat and blues-rock to psychedelia and heavy prog. 'Underdogs' is the 2024 album by Greek band Empty Frame and marks the beginning of a new era for the band. On 'Underdogs' the heavier, post-rock and psychedelic elements that have always been part of their music, now dominate, without hiding their unique melodic lines. The album emphasizes the immediacy and commanding power of the pummeling guitar-bass-drums trio on the one hand and their trademark soaring cello-violin combo on the other, a sound that matters and exists in the moment. Underdogs are all those people who have suffered oppression, discrimination, violence and facing their dead ends, wake up/breathe and rebel. 'Underdogs,' however, is a word that also fits Empty Frame too, who, after almost twenty years, continue their journey creating, despite adversity, losses and personal dark moments.

This represents the more art rock end of the Great Crash spectrum, with long intelligent prog based tracks that tackle quirky subject matter like prime era 10cc. Totally recommended. Notes and artwork supervised by the band. Part of the Great Crash's songwriting heart, Piers Geddes, died in 2023, shortly after contributing to the Great Crash's fascinating It's Psychedelic Baby interview. There should have been a documentary about this unique band, but it wasn't in the stars.

Elements of Caravan, Soft Machine and Fuchsia, recorded in a London and Dublin studio in 1973 for a planned LP that never happened. 15 minute tracks that allow the band and compositions to develop and expand in the best way, sheer unadulterated progressive genius. Marvelous Kid are named after a line from Kipling, and use the one L spelling. They gigged constantly with bands like The Groundhogs,Stackridge, Stonehouse, Gentle Giant, and included members from the legendary Grannie and also Patto. Anyone into Genesis, Soft Machine, Caravan, Camel, Fuchsia, 25 Views Of Worthing et al should check this out. It's utterly brilliant extended prog. Seelie Court will issue more of their recordings soon. It's a joy to listen to this 100% authentic prog rock, from original reels.

Formed in London in 1977 by Mark Perry and Alex Fergusson, then editors of the punk fanzine Sniffin' Glue, Alternative TV was a post-punk group known for incorporating reggae rhythms and pushing the boundaries of the definition of punk toward the experimental and avant-garde. Their first album, 'The Image Has Cracked,' came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of the era.

Teeming with infectious hooks and delicate textures, 'Keady & Vallins' stacks up favorably against now heralded titans of soft pop/yacht rock and pop disco-lite, living in the intersection between Bobby Caldwell, Steely Dan, and 'Saturday Night Fever'-era Bee Gees. 'Keady & Vallins' is an all-too-familiar story of potential left unfulfilled - glorious pop music shunted by the impetuous thrums of a music industry stricken by decadence and a preference for high turnover and rigorous proprietorship. A tour with the Bee Gees by Vallins and help from Robert Stigwood resulted in a deal with Polydor. After a pair of singles produced by a young, upstart (now hugely important head of Universal Music Group) Lucien Grange achieved moderate success in France, an album was next: taped by Keady and Vallins during downtime from other sessions. They pulled world class talent from the studio, from the pub down the street from the studio, while also (temporarily) pilfering instruments from the shop below the studio (price tags still affixed) - to create a striking blend of sepia-toned soft pop/yacht rock and pop disco-lite. Born out of a quick friendship turned decades long songwriting partnership between Gary Keady and John Vallins, the full-length record was meant to be a mark of the duo's growing promise as songwriters at Chappell - the publishing house's self-proclaimed Australian facsimile of the American duo Hall & Oates (or maybe a two-person Bee Gees?). But that's not what happened, is it. Dormant since its completion in 1979, the 'Keady & Vallins' album slots in perfectly amongst its contemporaries as a classic. To further cement its much-belated legacy, 'Keady & Vallins' contains the original version of Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams' smash #1 hit 'Too Much Too Little Too Late' (written by Vallins), and features a coterie of preeminent musicians, including Tommy Emmanuel (guitar) and John Altman (strings).

It's quite simple, if you have a good connection with music, to find things that should be reissued due to their exceptional quality, but, like a diviner, being able to unravel the problems related to the licensing of a record, well, that's much more difficult. Finding someone is Sherlock's job! After 4 years, Khan Jamal II (son of Khan Jamal) delighted Serie.Woc with a "Let's go my guy." Khan Jamal doesn't need much introduction: Born Warren Robert Cheeseboro, he was a jazz vibraphone and marimba player from Philly. He founded the band Sounds of Liberation in 1970 with Byard Lancaster. In 1974, during one of his many trips to the old continent, he recorded this album in France at Jeff Gilson's Palm studio. It is a delicate game of lucid and intense contrasts between Christian Vander's drums provides a rock oriented touch, the marimba and the vibes with influences from the lands of the rising sun of Jamal and the composed trumpet of Clint Jackson III which anchor 'Give The Vibes Some' in a sort of space age jazz era. In the end, you know what? This album is a transcendent journey into yourself, like an intense session of meditation... even if '35.007 Feet Up' could easily be played by Jeff Mills in his DJ set. 'Ladybird'... one perfect heavy as fuck hypnotic riff played over and over and over and over across 2 sides of an LP. Back when Shit And Shine formed, the idea was basically to sound like their heroes Drunks With Guns and Strangulated Beatoffs, using that same basic formula. A big dumb ass catchy riff played over and over until the joke gets old ... then keep going. Recorded live at Southern Studios, London (fun fact: the same room where Bauhaus recorded 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'!) in 2004 with just two basses, a snare drum, a huge cardboard box and a tiny toy Casio sa-1 keyboard (using the "airplane" sound hitting the same key over and over for 41 minutes). Some still say it's the best thing Shit And Shine has ever done. Originally released on CD, and super limited vinyl waaay back in 2005. This was Shit And Shine's second release and it sold out REAL quick. Remastered and beefed the hell up by Craig Clouse at Shit And Shine Ranch 2022. Don't sleep on it.

Few have done as much for salsa in Venezuela as band-leader, composer and pianist Ray Pérez. He burst on to the scene in the mid-'60s with his group Los Dementes, creating the blueprint for guaguanco, pachanga and boogaloo in Venezuela. When the name salsa began to be used as something of a catch-all-term he was still at the forefront, recording two hugely-popular salsa albums with Los Dementes in 1967. Remarkably, that very same year, he also recorded two albums with a brand new group, Los Calvos, that showed how as well as being the genre's most visible band-leader, he was also pushing the nascent genre to its limits. Looking back, revered journalist Alfredo Churion states that Los Calvos were "one of the most innovative experiences in Venezuelan popular music." 'Estos Son Los Calvos' is the first of the two albums he made with Los Calvos. On it, he made a few alterations to the line-up that may seem minor, but created a completely new sound. For the first time, he recruited a drummer (unprecedented at the time for a salsa ensemble, which always used percussionists), he switched from the trombones of Los Dementes to the much harder, direct sound of trumpets, and he recruited Carlos Yanez, best known as El Negrito Calavén, as singer. Whereas Los Dementes had been aligned with the slightly pop sound of tropical orchestras, Los Calvos took an almost-jazz approach, allowing room for the musicians and vocalists to improvise, and they also took inspiration from the sounds of surf rock swirling around Caracas. The group's drummer El Pavo amusingly once described the group's sound as like "wearing a dinner suit with flip-flops."

Repress! Edward Artemiev's re-recording of his score to Andrei Tarkovsky's classic 1972 film 'Solaris,' reissued on 180-gram vinyl. When Artemiev recorded this score in Moscow in 1989 and '90, there was no legitimately available releases of the original soundtrack. Artemiev chose to fill that void himself with this recording, released on Torso Kino in the Netherlands as part of a 1990 double-LP set also containing re-recordings of Artemiev's scores to 'Mirror' (1975) and 'Stalker' (1979). This set is now long out of print, and Mirumir is pleased to present the collection on two separate LP releases, remastered, with new artwork, and officially licensed by the artist himself.

Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most "far out" albums of all time was made by this Swiss band (no small feat, given the competition!). Brainticket's 1971 debut, 'Cottonwoodhill', begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic/kraut rock-influenced tracks, but the remainder of the album plays like an acid trip with a soundtrack, dominated by Joel Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrète-type sound effects and vocalist Dawn Muir's trippy vocals. The album, banned in several countries, even came with this self-imposed warning: "After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore."/"Only listen to this once a day, your brain might be destroyed!"

While the band's debut album, 1971's 'Cottonwoodhill', was a heavily acid-laden affair dominated by droning organ, disturbing vocals and a collection of cacophonic sound effects (causing it to carry a warning label and be banned in several countries) for their second effort, band-founder Joël Vandroogenbroeck brought in a completely new line-up and changed the band's sound dramatically. While 'Psychonaut' still takes listeners into the realm of altered consciousness -making heavy use of a droning Hammond, sitar, tablas, etc.- this time the vocals are more melodic and the music itself is more song-oriented. This is by far Brainticket's most accessible album, and perhaps their most timeless. Fully remastered from the original master tapes!
