AMERICAN DREAM - 1969 RUNDGREN DEMOS
Local Philly legends the American Dream was a late '60s band (featuring musician/actor Nick Jameson, later of Foghat!) who were regulars at clubs like the Electric Circus and offered a cool mix of psych, hard-rock and proto-power pop. They were signed to Ampex/Bearsville Records, releasing their only album in 1970, produced by Todd Rundgren (his first production work).
Now, for the first time on vinyl and straight from the original masters, we present their previously unreleased studio demos from 1969 - also produced by Todd Rundgren - that landed the band their deal with Ampex. Music is great psych-rock with superb vocal harmonies and hard guitars. Also included are two rare tracks from their unfinished 1970 second LP plus the killer garage-jangle classic 'Big Brother,' originally recorded by pre-American Dream band The Finestuff in 1967, as a bonus.

This album from 1976 unites a dream team of musicians from Os Mutantes, Black Rio, Som Nosso and special guest Dominguinhos, into an amazing fusion of Brazilian regional rhythms of capoeira, forró and candomblé, with the heaviest funk, soul, rock, progressive and psychedelic music ever released in Brazil. In his own words, Eduardo Araújo stated in 1976: "Our musical philosophy remains the same: mixing rock and northeastern music to make a universal sound." It is curious to observe the aesthetic changes that Eduardo Araújo underwent until he reached the cult sound of this 1976 album: echoes of Santana, Tim Maia, Luiz Gonzaga and Emerson, Lake & Palmer in an album that was released independently at the time and, until today, never re-released. The original release of 'Sou Filho Desse Chao' in 1976 was made totally independent by Eduardo Araújo himself, with total lack of commercial distribution, remaining obscure from music charts and later rediscovered acquiring a well-deserved status of rare gem for music collectors.

In the '60s, in Chile there were two styles of pop music that were very popular: one was the 'new wave', something like the descendants of the Anglo-Saxon pop soloists; the other, naturally, were the groups that, under the influence of the British invasion by the hand of the Beatles, played rock and roll. With 'Juegos Prohibidos,' Beat 4 begin to detach themselves a little from that current that was limited to copying and covering especially British hits, and began to sing in Spanish, and to risk more in the production of their songs, approaching psychedelia and experimentation. With its own personality and a fresh sound, 'Juegos Prohibidos' is a key piece to understand the first steps of Chilean rock, an album that although it keeps winks to the greats of rock, especially the Stones ('Encontrarás Otro Amor'), also gives original steps ('Quiero Fugarme Con Ella A Una Isla Solitaria (Donde Haya Paz)'), and mystical experimentation with psychedelic touches already influenced by the hippie generation ('Viaje Fantástico'). One of the jewels of a pioneer band of the Chilean rock of the '60s. Originally released in 1967.

Reinterpretations of songs from the '60s and '70s by Beautify Junkyards from Portugal, keeping the roots but at the same time taking new directions under the influence of the present times where societies, technology and artistic creation are at a boiling point. Limited vinyl version. After a dozen or so albums, this probably is Circle's tribute to entropy. Their characteristic clockwork mechanisms wind down into uncharacteristic disorder. A good portion of the album finds them venturing into a hazy, oft-noisy primitive psych direction, equally serving up repetitive rock pulsations and noodly fusion. Creating a mellow caveman hippy jam of all sorts, followed by an example of twangy acoustic psych and throwing in krautrock beat, maniacal noise drone and some part, more spastical and chaotic than you would expect. As the '70s vibe is palpable the obscure music analogy is like Captain Beyond meets Neu! Stoner prog kraut. Evoking the image of a pack of drunken Trolls stumbling around a fire, casting spells and having an acoustic hootenanny. Oscilating between compelling mischief and divine inspiration.

Classic UK late '60s psychedelic/folk/pop sound recorded at Advision Studios with support from future 10cc colleagues Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart. In mid-1969, legendary British R&B/psychedelic entrepreneur Giorgio Gomelsky signed two Manchester-based art students, renaming them Frabjoy & Runcible Spoon. Envisaging the pair as a British Simon & Garfunkel, Gomelsky recorded an LP with them for release on his Marmalade label. A pre-LP single appeared, but sadly the album's release was aborted. 53 years later, Grapefruit Records released on CD this missing piece of the pre-10cc jigsaw puzzle. 'Be As Good To Others As They Are Not To You' starts as a mystery. A piece of tangible vinyl with often transient and evanescent content; sound appearing and fading such that you can lose certainty as to whether it emanates from the record or from out in the street. The music measured and atmospheric; a rural psychedelia on the cusp between folk and country; gnomic lyrics, meditating on loss as a stage in the cycle of nature, with a strong impression of a patient, unforced gestation.
The sleeve has a stark beauty; the front being a fine piece of John Hurford frontier art, akin to that of Jeff Horsey's 'Rattlesnakes And Heartstrings.' There is no legend and nothing on the spine either. The back shows two rustic, bearded gentlemen with small guitar, a pump organ, and an ancient zither; there are song titles but they're barely decipherable.
This pair are Jens Unossun and Arne Jonasson. Jens is a founder member of The Spacious Mind, a notable Swedish ensemble who, for nigh on three decades, have been releasing memorable psychedelic music. They famously accompanied Tom Rapp, of Pearls Before Swine, at his Terrastock appearance in London in 1999. Jonasson is a regular collaborator with Jens on such side-trips as The Holy River Family Band. They're the sole performers on six of the eight tracks here; Jens singing and playing keyboards, Arne on various stringed instruments, and both adding percussion. The other two - 'Sweet Home Blues (Redneck Dumbfuck Blues)' and 'Green Was The Day (Bottom Of The Well)' - see them joined by the Head Country Hoedowners - Snosun and Aarnson Jones, Black Owl, and Dave Hell - and the presence of these acclaimed purveyors of outlaw mutation boogie signal changes in mood. The Jones Brothers also serve as producers and arrangers.

Los Vidrios Quebrados were pioneers in Chile in adopting psychedelia as a musical aesthetic, due to the influences gathered mainly from British groups. Although they bequeathed only one LP, this one is a permanent reference of research and applause, for having been worked with their own material (without covers, as was the norm of local rock at the time) and combining their electric flight with opinions of social observation. 'Fictions' (1967) is one of the most important rock albums made in Chile.

LUIGI ANA DA BOYS - FEELING THE CEILING
Originally released as a private press in 1978 (but sounding more akin to 1970), this is a terrific example of British hard-rock/heavy-prog in the same vein as Wishbone Ash or Thin Lizzy, dominated by killer twin guitar attacks. With roots in the West Yorkshire pub rock scene and led by ace guitar player Duncan McFarlane, Luigi Ana Da Boys recorded their first album, 'Feeling The Ceiling,' at a local studio in Leeds. 1000 copies were self-released in a plain white sleeve with a single-sided credits insert, as the band didn't have the money for a picture sleeve. One of those copies ended up with John Peel, who raved about the band and played a couple of songs at his radio show.
The band eventually folded, giving birth to the Duncan McFarlane Band but over the years, there have been some Luigi reunions locally. Featured in Hans Pokora's 'Record Collector Dreams' book with four stars. File under hard-rock, proto-metal, pre-NWOBHM. Remastered sound. First official vinyl reissue of this sought-after psychedelic folk-rock/Americana/SSW album from 1976. Major Arcana was a group led by counter-culture Milwaukee icon Jim Spencer, featuring a revolving cast of musicians/collaborators. The core of the band was Jim Spencer (guitar, vocals), Randall Dubis (electric guitar), Michael Burdecki (bass, slide guitar) and Jim Kitchen (percussion, harmonica). They were helped in the studio by some friends/musicians like Sigmund Snopek III and Barry Patton among many others. Released on Jim Spencer's own private label (A Major Label, home also to Anonymous of 'Inside The Shadow' fame), the album opens with the terrific psych-folk of 'Western Wind' and closes with an acid-folk rendition of 'Greensleeves.' In between, you'll also find some blues rock, SSW ballads, jazzy bits... File next to groups like Pearls Before Swine or Bermuda Triangle. Remastered sound. Rustic Hinge & The Provincial Swimmers were a short-lived experimental music venture in the summer of 1970, based in Ilsington Farmhouse, near Puddletown, Dorset (later to be known as Jabberwocky Studios) that evolved out of the ashes of Arthur Brown's Puddletown Express. "The West Country can be a strange and mad place. It surely was in those wild counter-cultural days as the '60s slid into the '70s. Arriving in Bristol in late 1971 for what proved a five-year stretch I crossed paths - in cider pubs, occult bookshops, venues, and record shops - with all manner of characters touched and changed by their doings during those times. Similar doings likely rubbed off and left their mark on me. This extraordinary artefact hails from that milieu, fleshes out a tale that's been retold a few times in various under-the-radar settings, and given three of the central protagonists are now dead perhaps now tells the definitive story. It rescues lost music and presents it as it was originally meant to be, before temporary silliness and pique took hold, making good on renewed but shelved intentions. It's music weird, crazy, and magnificent, possessed of truly creative, psychedelic madness. To frame it as an English 'Trout Mask Replica' is on the money, though along with the Magic Captain, Bartok and Stockhausen will be pleased to hear they are cited as influences, and there's elements of post-war radio comedy too." ~Bucketfull Of Brains. A superb cool blend of acid-rock, psychedelia and brass-rock with some outstanding guitar leads, Hammond organ and a tight rhythm section. Stow Lake was a seven piece group (named after the lake in Golden Gate Park) comprised of well-seasoned musicians from the original San Francisco psychedelic/fusion scene. Among them, we can find ace guitar player Bob Hardy (previously of hard psych group The Osgoode/Asgard); the tandem of Jeff Ervin (sax, flute) and Jean Hintermann (trumpet), both later on Aura, Bill Whiter's backing band and Hot Cider (with Dennis Geyer of A.B. Skhy); child prodigy Larry Mallarino on trombone and bass player Dave Dunaway (later of jazz fusion band Listen). Not forgetting powerful singer/organist Bob Staley. Unreleased until now, the recordings contained here were registered at top studios like McCune and Golden State Recorders. Also including are a couple of excellent quality live tracks recorded at the legendary Fillmore West in 1971, showing the band at their peak with an impressive jamming/acid-rock sound. Cool library-styled French album from 1970. Psychedelic, proggy jazz-funk with Brazilian/Bossa touches! Groovy flute by Bernard Wystraëte plus heavy bass, drums (by André Ceccarelli), violin, occasional fuzz-wah guitar and Urszula Dudziak-like scat vocals. In 1970, the AFA label asked flautist Bernard Wystraëte to register a "pop" album after the worldwide impact of progressive bands like Aphrodite's Child and Jethro Tull.
Bernard recruited some of his friends who were professional musicians and Structure was born. He wrote a collection of songs influenced by progressive rock, jazz and Brazilian music. The 'Pop Music' album was recorded live in the studio to give a "live show" feel. It was released later that year housed in a superb psychedelic sleeve. The band even toured across France and several countries at the same time that Bernard and other Structure members started backing famous French singer Marie Laforêt live. After the good reception given to the album, another label asked Bernard to record a Structure 45. 'Dilatation'/'Scale' was released under a new line-up. This totally unknown album from 1975 was recorded in the UK by two close friends. Both of them recorded one side of the album, which originally only existed on two acetate records. It contains epic neo classical prog rock in the style of Renaissance and Continuum, inspired by the wild and pagan isles of St Kilda. The second part of the album has intense Cohen-like songs which were the result of the heartaches and homesickness of a Canadian student who went to university in the UK.

'Live At Pulchri' is Pythagoras' first offering since much-missed drummer Bob de Jong passed away in 2011, shortly after the release of the band's magnus opus 'The Correlated ABC'. In this live registration of an impromptu concert performed at an exhibition by Dutch painter and sculptor Ilja Walraven, Pythagoras' only surviving founding member René de Haan teams up with ABC guest musicians percussionist Joshua Samson and bass veteran Peter "Peer" Wassenaar plus beats magician Rob Bothof playing his custom-built electronics. The result is unique and entrancing, the typical Pythagoras sound labelled as 'progressive electronic', created by De Haan's sentimental Mellotron and dreamy ambient passages, blending amazingly well with the compelling rhythms and patterns provided by Bothof, Wassenaar and Samson. Makes you think of cats? Capricious, mischievous and fascinating, the concert (79:00 minutes!) forms an imaginative counterpart to the art of Ilja Walraven, as exemplified by the charming cat portraits adorning the CD's excellent artwork.

Zakary Thaks, youthful pride of Corpus Christi, could quite easily take the prize as the most precious and forward-thinking of all texas 1960's garage bands, save for the admittedly more seasoned 13th Floor Elevators. The evidence is plain for all to hear on 'A Passage To India.' EM Forster inspired the title, the Yardbirds inspired the arrangement, but the Thaks lent their own youthful impetuosity to this remarkable blend of wide-eyed mysticism and teenaged nervous tension. It makes its debut on 45RPM vinyl here, as does 'It's The End,' an obscure original from the band's early repertoire that superficially channels the Kinks but otherwise 100% Thaks sound: dynamic rhythm section, guitars both precise and flagrant, and a superbly poised vocal. Play loud and raise a glass to these Gulf Coast teens, the likes of whom rock'n'roll will probably never see or hear again. Recorded 1st November (Side A) and 25th September, 1966 (Side B) at ACA-Gold Star Studios, Houston, Texas.

In between there are also some backing vocals. So the whole thing sounds like a very clean, professional recording from the 1950s, when the different styles united to form rock'n'roll.

Los Mac's were formed in 1962 in Playa Ancha, initially as a cover band. In 1965 they moved to Santiago, with their experience on their backs, and with their own songs they attracted the interest of RCA, who quickly signed them. In their career the band would record 6 albums, 4 in their heyday in the '60s, and 2 more after their reunion in 2010. 'Kaleidoscope Men' is the most important and successful of this Valparaiso quartet, and was produced at RCA by Carlos Gonzalez.
'Kaleidoscope Men' is a psychedelic album clearly influenced by the Beatles' 'Sgt Pepper's,' and by the groups of the then called Californian sunshine pop. A mature album, with excellent vocal and instrumental arrangements that flies from the confines of the world to a universal sound with fluidity and elegance. The elegant 'Degrees' shines with its own light, psychedelia with vocal touches of great bands of the '60s like The Turtles, The Association or the incomparable Byrds. 'El Evangelio De La Gente Sola' is a progressive instrumental cut with the peculiar sound of a church organ, while 'Dear Friend Bob' uses the technique that George Martin used with the Beatles in their most experimental stage of using the tapes in the opposite direction, with which the sound of the instruments "upside down" gives the special touch popularized by the 4 from Liverpool but used assiduously by bands of the time. The acid baroque of 'A Través Del Cristal' is close to 'Strawberry Fields Forever,' while 'La Muerte De Mi Hermano' enters the anti-war current of the Vietnam War era; a poignant song structurally supported by the Byrds' guitar sound. Originally released in 1967, 'Kaleidoscope Men' is the penultimate and most respected album by the Mac's, who would record their last album in 1968 and then move to the United States. A jewel to rediscover through this careful release that honors the original with an excellent remastering and artwork.

Tremelo and wah wah pedals get abused to squalling effect, Keith Moon-esque drums clatter and the Hammond wails. It's ALIVE! And THRILLING!
The songs are stuffed with pop melodies and the sound has its tentacles over all manner of '60s bands - the cover of Bohemian Vendetta's 'Enough' gives a clue as to where the band's collective head is. The album is beautifully produced in a way it sounds like it wasn't produced at all. Totally raw and occasionally rough-edged, exactly how music was recorded, before technology smoothed everything out to near blandness.
Guitars twang, chime, fuzz and wah-wah into a frenzy of excitement, vocals stretch beyond their abilities and occasionally scream and break, while the drums biff bang and pow (er) their way through, while somehow holding everything together. Organs swirl, and a variety of 'strange sounds' all of which were created by experimentation, rather than using modern day 'plug ins' or 'pressing buttons', will have you wondering, what is that?...

Limited repress. Vanity Records is one of the best Japanese music secrets. Sounds like New York's late 70's post-punk scene such as James Chance & The Contortions, Martin Rev or even ESG. Early techno gems, disco punk and noisy landscapes with a real Japanese flavour. Founded in Kyoto in 1978 by chief editor of 'Rock Magazine' Mr. Agi Yuzuru, this label had a short but very interesting production. Only 10 long player albums, 3 singles, 1 double compilation and few cassettes have been recorded between 1978 and 1981. Few flexi-discs too were given with 'Rock magazine' issues during 1980. All of the records were extremeliy limited and were released between 200 and 500 copies only. Most of the covers were handmade and nowadays original pressings are impossible to find and change hands for hundreds of dollars. Here's your last chance to get the finest selection from one of the best underground and experimental movements.

A neo-soul album, 'Mama's Gun' incorporates funk, soul, and jazz styles. It has confessional lyrics by Badu, which cover themes of insecurity, social issues and personal relationships. The album has been viewed by critics as a female companion to neo soul artist D'Angelo's second album 'Voodoo' (2000), which features a similar musical style and direction.

In days of high politicization of music, the so-called New Song was undoubtedly the one that monopolized the media. In that environment appears the Combo Xingu, a band far from the Latin Americanist line and political ebullition, took elements of soul and funk to build this jewel mostly ignored at the time, which is his only legacy. Stevie Wonder and James Brown are their most notorious references, but they also bring their own personality and elements, especially in the song 'Black Power', as the band's position. It is also worth mentioning a memorable interpretation of Led Zeppelin's classic 'Moby Dick'. Far from the conjunctural, the band dissolves with only two years and one album to their credit, separated from the mainstream by a style that although it was very popular in the north, was of null diffusion in Chile, but they leave this unique piece as a sample of other bands that would come years later to continue their legacy, ahead for the times. Originally released in 1972.

After capturing ten hard-hitting tracks, a creative difference with her then label caused the record to be unexpectedly shelved. 'HITS DE DISCO POP PERUANO (1978-1989)' - This compilation brings together for the first time diverse Peruvian musical groups that immersed themselves in dance music following the codes brought by the disco revolution. As a phenomenon of a new culture, the global dissemination of disco music had various variations and reformulations. The way it took root in Peru constitutes a fascinating yet underexplored history, despite the numerous recordings that came to light, mainly in the 1980s, running parallel to the boom of Peruvian tropical music, the emergence of a new pop rock scene, and the widespread use of synthesizers and electronic drums. And even though the groups were eclectic and moved across various musical genres, their dance music hits have now become cult pieces. From Lima to Trujillo, from Iquitos to Tarapoto, this compilation presents a wide range of sounds designed for the dance floor: unrestrained, eclectic, and high-energy. From pioneering groups with brief yet foundational trajectories like Rollets (composed of members from the rock group Laghonia) or Santodomingo Kid (led by experimental musician Luis David Aguilar), who range from boogie to soul disco with electrifying synthesizer sounds. But also, the exotic arrangements of Grupo América and Grupo Cremolada, to the tropical disco pop sound of Grupo San Francisco or Los Roller's de Tarapoto. From the space disco ventures of Grupo Swing to the synthesized pop sound of Pepo Rock, Jaque Mate, or Annie. 'Viva El Sábado: Hits De Disco Pop Peruano (1978-1989)' constitutes a fabulous and unique document to delve into Peruvian dance music and initiates a new series at Buh Records that will present in various volumes some of the treasures of disco music in Peru.
