A collective whose recordings where in part due to the sad passing of Tibor Strauzs (a passionate Hungarian musician) - who over a lifetime as a recording musician had collected some of the best recording equipment available. Tibor's son David was tasked with safekeeping all this equipment he felt the best way to test all this equipment was with a monumental jam session at Psychedelic Source Studios. ::nepaal was formed from that session and the title sums up the essence of this project - eastern psychedelic wisdom, far-out improvisation, the legacy of a good man and the crystallisation of decades of musical friendship. So over 2 LP's get ready for head spinning jams where you can start to feel the universe expand and contract with the vibrations that emit from the grooves cut into these slabs of vinyl. It is a truly a special feeling to be immersed in the wonderfully explosive, difficult to predict and utterly mind-melting psychedelic mantra of sounds and harmony created by ::nepaal - a place guaranteed to illuminate many tunnels of spiralling trip-time. Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records are delighted to make available for you the debut release by Ambassador Hazy - 'Glacial Erratics' - previously pressed as a private press edition of 100 records back in 2020. Ambassador Hazy is a solo recording project by Sterling DeWeese who was previously in a slew of obscure bands including Heavy Hands, Dirty Rainbow, Terrapin Gun, Madison Electric and Black Fantastic. 'Glacial Erratics' is really a comeback record as Sterling had totally stopped playing for 7 or 8 years after he got married and started a family and the business of life took over - but the calling was always there and as his youngest began to grow - the time became available for Sterling to answer the call.
First though he needed to get his «" reel to reel 8 track back in working order and set up a studio space and fit it out with gear. It required the small matter of converting part of the basement into a studio, building the walls, and adding enough soundproofing to hopefully keep the neighbors and his wife happy - but such a thing was not going to stop Sterling. Soon he was playing again with some local musicians and recording some of those performances live to tape but the hassle of getting everyone together at the same time was hard so in the downtime Sterling began focusing on recording on his own. Thus the name 'Glacial Erratics' was born, as it was all a bit of a hodge podge (i.e. erratic) and ended up being done over several years (i.e. glacial). Once there was enough material finished, between band tracks and solo tracks Sterling compiled them. The resulting album is a kaleidoscope of contagious hooks and artfully crafted songs, laid to tape and brought to life in brilliant colour. 'Black Smoke Rising' is a blur of fuzz guitar and stuttering snare hits as Sterling tells us 'I believe in the future - don't take it away' and over 14 tracks you are treated to artfully crafted acid pop gems that are riddled with potholes and weird left turns, with hooks that seem to bubble out of nowhere before receding into themselves. The lo-fi aesthetic works perfectly, with the songs benefiting from the warm fuzz tones of the instruments and vocals recorded onto that now fully functioning «" tape machine. Limited to 250 copies on black vinyl.

Following 2022's much loved and long sold out 'The Traveler' Ambassador Hazy is back with 'The Door Between' (the title taken from an old detective novel) which is a perfect metaphor for album's explorations into consciousness and perception, seeing the connectedness between all things while also embracing one's solitude and separation from others. Themes that were amplified as the record was recorded alone in a basement during a pandemic. With some new mics and toys featuring on this recording, Sterling experiments a bit more with recording techniques and different sounds which bring about a more overtly psychedelic sound than on 'The Traveler' and with a few songs being more explicitly drug related (and or induced). 'The Door Between' is about being an outsider, or at least that feeling of being outside of things and the ways one might find connection be that through drugs, music, love. So while 'Orange Halos' starts the proceedings the overtly upbeat and infectious melodies we have come to know and love from Ambassador Hazy - by the time you reach 'Going Down' you are dropped into Martin Rev/Suicide synth/drum machine head trip.
So join Ambassador Hazy - maybe crack open a beer, smoke a joint, take a tab or just sit in your favourite chair - drop the needle on 'The Door Between' and let it transport you to that other place. 300 copies on black vinyl.

Previously unreleased heavy acid-rock/proto-prog album from 1972! Asgard (initially known as Osgoode, named after the street where Blue Cheer had their headquarter) was a San Francisco band featuring ace guitar player Bob Hardy (a veteran of many Bay Area bands since the early '60s) and Jake 'Gelon' Lau (Gideon & Power, Mary McCreary, Tribe...) on electric violin and vocals. This is their lost album, registered at Roy Chen Recorders in 1972, now released for the first time. 'For Asgard' features nine original tracks, perfectly recorded and played, dominated by Bob Hardy's outstanding fuzzy lead guitar and the cool touch of Gelon's Lau electrified violin that recalls UK prog-psych bands like the similar named Asgærd or High Tide at times. Hard to believe that such a pro-recorded, top quality album like this was never released at the time. After playing a celebrated free concert at the Provo Park in Berkeley alongside bands like Mother Cat and Summerhill, the band slowly disintegrated. In October 2023, Greek label Anazitisi Records celebrates 20 years as a record label, so they proudly present the official release of the previously unissued album by Ashhollow. The band formed in 1973 in Oklahoma USA. After some personnel changes they took their final form in 1975 with Bill Kirtley: vocals, guitar, Mike Stewart: vocals, guitar, Mike Hanna: vocals, bass and Gary Bruce: drums. They played locally in clubs and concerts and had their own compositions written by all 4 members. Besides the original material (most of it, is presented here) they played a variety of covers by bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, CSN&Y, Kansas etc. Their music is ranged between hard rock with many psych underground vibes and
progressive rock with jazzy overtones. Wishbone Ash, Primevil, Majic Ship, Hard Meat, even quieter and less polished Ashbury come in mind... This album was made from an original reel-to-reel tape, recorded on January 30, 1976. All live in the studio with no overdubs. The tape contains 11 songs in total but Anazitisi used only the 9 of them because of vinyl limitations. Soon after the recordings, Ashhollow came to a halt. Includes fully laminated cover and 4-pages (LP-sized) coloured insert with bio, photos, lyrics and memorabilia.
Limited to 200 black copies, 180gr vinyl as usual.

Rubinho e Mauro Assumpçao's 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei' has to be up there as one of the finest Brazilian-psych-folk-MPB records. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find in the wild; even on digging trips to Brazil, an original copy rarely shows up, and when it does, it comes with a hefty price tag. This highly sought-after rarity was released on the Brazilian label Tapecar Records in 1972 and is the one and only album by the sensational pairing of Rubinho and Mauro Assumpçao. Effortlessly blending folk, MPB, funky-psych, rock, and relaxed, swaggering samba, this record ought to be heralded as a true Brazilian classic. However, maybe due to its scarcity and the previous reissue predominantly being only available to the Brazilian market, it has not had a chance to fully shine and find the wider audience it deserves. Through Mr Bongo's reissue they hope to put things right. Fans of records by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges are sure to enjoy the same magic and allure in 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei.' In addition to being the album's songwriters, Mauro Assumpçao took on the role of producer and Rubinho was co-producer as well as playing piano, organ, acoustic guitar and performing vocals. The record features the drummer Gegê who worked with Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Nana Caymmi, Dom Um Romao and more. It also features guitarist Rick Ferreira, who played with Erasmo Carlos, Gal Costa and other greats. Rounding off the players on the album are Darcy Da Cruz and Formiga who have graced many a fine recording on horns. BHAC are a collective with a varying line and each time they record all the music is improvised as they let their collective and innate abilities guide them, but what does bind them are the touchstones of drone and minimalism that runs through the music they create or just plain HEAVY. 'Surfacer' is not an album for the faint of heart with 2 long tracks of transcendence that will challenge and push you to lose yourself in the sonic experience of the timbre/vibrations of droning instruments and throat vocalisations as BHAC weave together mesmerizing waves of sonic texture. 'Surfacer' draws influence from bands like Neptunian Maximalism, Qujaku, Neurosis and the visual work of Andrei Tarkovsky, Kenneth Anger and Larisa Shepitko which influence the energy and darker sounds of the music while still taking influence from more traditional psychedelic sounds and experimental places like Taj Mahal Travellers, Suzuki Junzo, Pauline Oliveros, Vahvistusharha, and Toru Takemitsu aurally and visual energies from occult works like Jodorowsky's 'The Holy Mountain', Helena Blavatsky and Hilma Af Klint's 'Alterpieces 1-3'. As Terence McKenna might have said - BHAC are best experienced when listened to in complete solitude in a dark room while you are doing nothing else. Dando Shaft's third LP from 1972 continued their explorations into the progressive and psychedelic strands of folk, now with shifting time signatures evidencing an increasing sophistication, as well as an ongoing commitment to experimentation; more varied in theme than their previous releases, there were shades of blues in places and an array of new instruments in the mix, including harpsichord, accordion, and slide guitar, yet the progressive folk that was always at the core of the group is still intact. With original copies costing in the hundreds, this is another worthy exploration for Dando Shaft fans, and all lovers of progressive folk music.

In the autumn of 2022, the core of DWLVS got together for a recording session at Santo Studios in Oakland, CA, the same studio that birthed the three most recent DWLVS albums, 'Grow Towards The Light' (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond), 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Set Times' (Centripetal Force), and 'Paradisiacal Mind' (Feeding Tube/Cardinal Fuzz). Because of the pandemic and members relocating from San Francisco's Bay Area to points all over the globe, DWLVS hadn't played together, or even seen each other in person, since their 2019 European tour. Band organizer Jeffrey Alexander had moved to Philadelphia, drummer Sheila Bosco set off for Amsterdam, and violinist Arjun Mendiratta had moved to the more remote confines of Northern California, leaving only bassist Brian Lucas in the immediate Bay. Like their last gathering at Santo in 2018, this 2022 session resulted in hours of rich material, the first of which is coming to light with 'Easy Portals.'
Outside of an odd cover song or two, DWLVS' material has always been centered on improvisation and spontaneous composition. The making of 'Easy Portals' was certainly no exception to this practice. And while the group's layoff was long, their penchant for meditative and intriguing long form compositions has only strengthened in the interim. Even upon initial listen, you will hear the familiar tone and timbre of DWLVS. However, on this album there is also found a darker and more progressive slant to their communal approach, possibly the result of those pandemic days. Or the current geo-political state of the world. Or both. Whatever the case, and as reflected by the artwork, 'Easy Portals' transports DWLVS to another musical dimension. Consistent with their practice of collaborating with other artists, DWLVS was sure to include friends new and old to the 2022 recording session. 'Easy Portals' sees the return of Taralie Peterson (Spires In The Sunset Rise, Tekla Peterson) on saxophone, as well as the arrival of J. Lee and Marina Lazzara (both of the San Francisco band The Rabbles, as well as Warm Spell, which also includes Brian Lucas). Lee, who plays farfisa organ and modular synth, and Lazzara, who offers voice and percussion, are a defacto Keith and Donna to the DWLVS lineup and serve as a key element in setting the tone for the sonic portals that lay before you. Fruits de Mer celebrates its 100th 'Crustacean' release and, just when you thought it was safe to go back to the fishmongers, The Fishheads are back after a year spent deep, deep in the Mariana Trench (or maybe in the coffee shop in the SeaLife Centre in Weymouth)... a gang of roaming musicians rounded up occasionally by Marc Swordfish from Astralasia, force-fed classic '60s psychedelia and locked up in a virtual studio until they come out with a bunch of WAV files. 'Lobster Basque Replica' combines one side of covers - from Pink Floyd to Mighty Baby - together with a sidelong piece that starts off owing something to Leonard Bernstein's 'Something's Coming' from 'West Side Story' and then goes somewhere else entirely, courtesy of Swordfish. The bonus CD includes alternative mixes of the LP tracks and another epic track from Marc that explores weird, new territory with 'Lola's Story' (Lola being the lobster pictured on the front cover). 'Lobster Basque Replica' was going to be a double 7", but that would have cost more than an LP and we wouldn't have been able to fit all the music on them, so it isn't. The Fishheads once again feature members of Astralasia, plus special guests including Anton Barbeau, Simon House and Icarus Peel.

A beautifully fragile folk/soft rock daydream recorded in 1971 and unreleased until now. Flight was formed in 1971 in the Michigan town of Grayling by Phil Stancil and Doug Slater. The two teenagers, with no formal musical training, sat down for a year to explore a shared sense of vulnerability, and newfound freedom in expressing an emotional openness rarely seen in young American men at the time. What resulted was an 8-track LP, recorded over two days in two separate studios. Aside from one single release, 'I'm Coming Home' would wait for a full half-century to be released. This recently uncovered and restored music provides a unique glimpse into the world that was 1971 America: a time when young men felt emboldened to abandon machismo and explore the feelings of heartbreak, longing, alienation, and love in music.

Sorrow,' Egg's first album, The Action's 'Rolled Gold' - but who would be mad enough to take on the whole of the classic 'Nursery Cryme,' Genesis having escaped the clutches of FdM in any form until now?? Any artist with the nerve to take on such a challenge was bound to appeal to Fruits de Mer, and with Rob Gould he already had 'history'... on the back of the 'Rob Gould Plays Pawn Hearts' LP, released through FdM in the summer of 2021, Rob had the idea of doing a follow-up album, covering another of his all-time favourite bands; but, which one? Over to Rob...
"'Nursery Cryme' had been a huge influence on me as a late-teen, and has stayed with me throughout my life as a musician, as have many of the earlier Genesis albums. But it was 'Nursery Cryme' in particular that I felt I knew best, having probably listened to it more than any other; another factor in choosing it over perhaps 'Foxtrot' or 'Selling England By The Pound,' was it seemed (not so in hindsight) infinitely more playable than the other Genesis classics.
In stark contrast to 'Pawn Hearts,' where I felt there was a lot of room for my own interpretation of the three epic songs on that album, with Genesis - summed up by the understated quote of Michael Rutherford - "If you play all the right notes, then the songs will sound quite good" - there was less room for improvisation, and I knew I had to get 'all the right notes' as close to the original versions as much as possible, albeit with my own unavoidingly personal style, and the unique feel and sounds of my friends. Over a period of weeks/months even, I painstakingly recorded a 'basic' template of each song... tempo maps, chords and notes, and added as any parts as I could in readiness for my musician friends to add their parts."

In the fall of 2012, Matt LaJoie began work on a set of lo-fi solo 4-track cassette home recordings that were intended to become Herbcraft's fourth album, 'Wot Oz'. As a bridge from the full-band Woodsist debut 'The Astral Body Electric', the songs and sketches of the Highland Ranch year represented a quickly and vastly shifting world of sonic inspiration: heavy Japanese psych, American free-jazz and proto-punk, and heady Velvet Underground bootlegs supplanted the flowing, folky, hippie-cult jams of yore. Several songs and sketches from this era were demoed and scrapped before the band's trio lineup solidified around drummer/producer Aaron Neveu and bassist/organist Joe Lindsey in summer 2013 to record 'Wot Oz' proper. Meanwhile, the 4-track cassette masters and crudely mixed 2-track bounce tapes from Highland Ranch were trucked from home to home in more than a dozen moves since 2013, eventually becoming lost in a mislabeled box for a couple years before finally being found in March. Now digitally transferred, remastered, and finished where left incomplete seven years ago, this previously apocryphal book of the Herbcraft story is being shared for the first time.

From the moment they emerged in the early days of the '80s Tokyo underground, High Rise set themselves apart as radical
outliers, shattering the limits of rock and psychedelic music with a ferocity unmatched even in that heady era. The group's core duo of Asahito Nanjo on bass/vocals and Munehiro Narita on guitar had an explosive chemistry; they mutated, distorted,
amplified the raw velocity, heaviness, and electricity of late '60s/early '70s rock into an entirely new, monstrous form. Running in similar circles, their approach paralleled that of Les Rallizes Dénudés, but with a more garage/proto-punk attack and the blistering intensity of a full-on amphetamine rush. While Mizutani's guitar is what took Rallizes's to another level, the same can be said for Narita's guitar work in High Rise - rightfully placing him in the pantheon of psychedelic guitarists and for some to call him "the undisputed king of the motorcycle fuzz guitar." The band inspired the launch of the legendary P.S.F. label, giving it its first two releases which along with its third release, the debut of Keiji Haino's Fushitsusha, signaled a new era in the world of Japanese underground music. High Rise's second album, 1986's 'II,' was a triumph and fully lived up to the group's original 'Psychedelic Speed Freaks' moniker, instantly raising the stakes for any band to follow. It carved out a new stream of rock music, rooted in an encyclopedic knowledge of the music's history and an almost metaphysical understanding of its raw elements and spirit. High Rise's third album, 1992's 'Dispersion,' kept the group's in-the-red intensity while pushing into new directions. Less grounded in speed, Nanjo along with drummer Dr. Euro build powerful, dynamic riffs that swing with crushing levels of
heaviness. Slower pieces rife with blues infused tension appear alongside dissonant no wave inflected passages and rumbling
biker rave-ups. All of which provide Narita with the room to create one of rock guitar's most compelling high wire spectacles. Throughout the album he creates dizzying torrents of notes with a precision, control and endless inventiveness that crackles with chaotic energy. As P.S.F.'s own description proclaimed at the time "Munehiro Narita's guitar explodes!" this is "Killer-Fuzz-Wah-Wah psychedelic heaven!"

The Human Hand live combo comprises Joe Hollick (Wolf People - Jagjaguwar Records, solo), Karl Eden (John Peel favourites tRANSELEMENt) and Jonathan Dickin (MUMS, Honey Spider, Bleak).
Joe and Karl met at an Acid Mothers Temple show in 2012 before realising they both lived minutes away from each other in neighbouring sleepy Lancashire Pennine villages. They performed a number of shows together as a wig-out loose improv duo channelling heavy motorik grooves, Anatolian suffused lead lines, a general layer of Northern skuzz tied together with Joe's signature guitar work. Early HH recordings were juxtaposed by being captured at extremely low volume due to necessity as the only available opportunity was to work on material late at night to avoid waking their young children. Human Hand were augmented and given a live makeover by the addition of Jonny (MUMS, Honey Spider, Bleak) on drums, a former student of Karl's and all round music and literary geek. The trio recorded their debut LP 'Tremor' in a hasty 8 hour session, with a vinyl release on Cardinal Fuzz recordings in the UK, and Feeding Tube in the US. Limited to 500 copies.

Over the last decade-and-a-half, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North and West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions. 'Poor Boy On The Wire' is his first full album dedicated wholly to the electric guitar. Through a typically wide-ranging set, Joynes exploits the instrument's potential by placing intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs, wiry electric folk and the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation. However, these explorations of the tones and timbres of close-mic'd guitars and amplification retain an overall coherence and unity through the deliberate use of a limited palette of budget instruments and vintage equipment. last copy! Kandodo was invited to play at the 2015 Roadburn Festival as part of The Heads residency. Robert Hampson from Loop/Main was also going to be at the festival and so it seemed a good opportunity for him to join Kandodo for this gig along with Wayne and Hugo from The Heads (who are also the Loop rhythm section as well as part of Kandodo). Rehearsals were set up in Bristol and the gig in Roadburn was a couple of nights later and that is the recordings gathered here for 'Burning The (Kandl)' with running order changed to help fit over these 2 hefty slabs of vinyl. So get ready for a total immersive trip through a psychedelic vortex. A glorious head nodding voyage into inner space where the vast churning of fuzzy guitars/keys/bass and drums phase in and out of focus with your inner core. The 4 other tracks on this album were released in 1968 as two separate singles, and 3 instrumental songs were previously released on the album of The Bosporus Sound Orchestra, called 'Laila's Dream', which was released by United Artists, Liberty, and Türkofon before. KAWAGUCHI, MASAMI - SELF-PORTRAIT
Japanese guitarist and songwriter Masami Kawaguchi first broke through with his group Broomdusters, which released one album. After this project he was a member of various formations, such as Miminokoto, LSD March, Los Doroncos, Usurabi and his projects with Keiji Haino: Aihiyo and The Hardy Rocks. But nothing in his history has been quite as distinctive, nor as singular, as 'Self-Portrait'. This is Kawaguchi articulating most clearly his vision of what rock music could and should be, and what it means to him. Repress! The fifth studio album and last euphoric mind-trip to Kikagaku Moyo's imagined island. Best-suited for counting stars, looking at the ocean, and dancing in one's daydream. In many ways 'Kumoyo Island' represents the culmination of a journey for Kikagaku Moyo. While their decade-long career can be summarized as a series of kaleidoscopic explorations through lands and dimensions far and near, there's a strong intention in each of their works to take the listener to a particular place, however real or abstract they may be. In that sense, the title and cover art for the band's fifth and final album draws you into a magical mass of land surrounded by water... but the couch suggests that 'Kumoyo Island'may not be a fleeting stop, but rather a place of respite, where one could pause and take it all in. Reconvening at Tsubame Studios in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, where their earliest material had been recorded, the five members of Kikagaku Moyo found new inspiration in a familiar and comfortable environment. With their adopted homebase of Amsterdam under lockdown and their touring activities halted due to the pandemic, the band felt a renewed sense of freedom being back in Shitamachi, or the old downtown area of their hometown. With unrestricted time in the studio, they began to build upon the demos and song fragments they'd amassed since their last tour. In the 1.5 months spent in Tokyo, everything started to come together. 'Monaka,' its name taken from a type of Japanese wafer sweets, takes melodic inspiration from traditional minyofolk styles, while 'Yayoi Iyayoi' is a rare instance of the band singing in their native tongue, its evocative lyrics utilizing archaic words taken from old poetry and nature books found in one of the many second-hand bookstores of Tokyo. For 'Meu Mar,' an Erasmos Carlos cover, the original Portuguese lyrics were translated into English, then to Japanese. Strangely enough, the words seem to conjure an image of the protagonist floating among the clouds, looking down upon Tokyo Bay. In fact, it may be possible to draw a parallel between the topography of the band's home country... an island nation, surrounded by bodies of water... and the mysterious isle of Kumoyo. Are they one and the same? Has the band finally made it back home? It's up to the listener to decide..

Last copies! The shifting dimensions of 'Masana Temples', the fourth album from psychedelic explorers Kikagaku Moyo, are informed by various experiences the band had with traveling through life together, ranging from the months spent on tour to making a pilgrimage to Lisbon to record the album with jazz musician Bruno Pernadas. The band sought out Pernadas both out of admiration for his music and in an intentional move to work with a producer who came from a wildly different background. With 'Masana Temples', the band wanted to challenge their own concepts of what psychedelic music could be. Elements of both the attentive folk and wild-eyed rocking sides of the band are still intact throughout, but they're sharper and more defined. More than the literal interpretation of being on a journey, the album's always changing sonic panorama reflects the spiritual connection of the band moving through this all together. Life for a traveling band is a series of constant metamorphoses, with languages, cultures, climates and vibes changing with each new town. The only constant for Kikagaku Moyo throughout their travels were the five band members always together moving through it all, but each of them taking everything in from very different perspectives. Inspecting the harmonies and disparities between these perspectives, the group reflects the emotional impact of their nomadic paths. The music is the product of time spent in motion and all of the bending mindsets that come with it.

The Lost Stoned Pandas were born from a conversation between Welsh spacerockers Sendelica's Pete Bingham and writer/musician Kris Needs during the recording of the 2019 Sendelica/The Orb/Secret Knowledge collaboration EP 'Windmill', with the name coming from a very surreal GIF of cavorting pandas. One thing led to another and a cupboard-full of pandas convened at Mwnci studios in sunny West Wales in July 2019 for a rather magical couple of days of drinking, eating and recording. In attendance with Panda Pete was Panda Paul: violin (ex-Curved Air), Panda Chris: electronics (ex-Space Ritual), Panda Jack: drums (Sendelica), Panda Kate: cello and Panda Glenda: bass (Sendelica). Autumn/winter saw the recordings being dissected, manipulated and re-assembled by Panda Colin, Panda Marc (Astralasia) and Panda Pete. The track titles are probably a reflection of just how lost and stoned this particular 'embarrassment' of pandas were (apparently, that is the correct collective noun for a bunch of them). "The sound gushes, flows, winds like a cosmic rattlesnake and occasionally sprouts a rhino's todger." ~Kris Needs (Electronic Sounds Magazine). From ambient bliss through ethnic rhythms to spacerock, The Lost Stoned Pandas are out there, somewhere.

Repress! 'Underground And Beyond' was the debut album by cult proto-metal band Lucifer Was, containing songs written in 1971-72. With inspiration from Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and Atomic Rooster. Remastered audio. Includes a colour insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar plus rare photos. Established in 1970 in Oslo, Lucifer Was were a powerful psychedelic hardrock and hard-prog band that split up in 1975. The band hibernated until 1996 when they reunited for a live concert. The chemistry appeared to be there still, and they entered a recording studio and recorded their first ever album, 'Underground And Beyond', featuring songs written in 1971-72. Their line-up included two flute players plus bass, drums and lead guitar by Thore Engen. Originally released in 1997 as a picture disc LP, here's the first ever standard LP reissue.

Menk hail from St. Petersberg, Russia and formed back in 2017 when like minded souls Yury and Kirill met at the underground venue Yury was running called 'Slam City.' A bond was forged as they bonded over a huge love of proto progressive (especially Sweden, Germany and the UK) and psych scenes from the halcyon years of 68-72. Menk take those influences and augments them with a sludgy, hypnotic sonic attack that takes in The Verve and Dead Meadow - where the ghost of Nick McCabe's trippy, mind bending playing seeps through the gauze that melds deep into the fabric of 'II.' Menk set out with the aim of taking the listener on the deepest of journeys - music made with no comprises - to create a pure spiritual experience, like seeing sunshine through a rainy cloud. This is the main connector of the songs Menk have created as they take you on trips from darkness to light. As the music came together - some tracks recorded on a Tascam porta studio in different places, fragments of jams recorded for the first ever time or tracks such as 'On Wet Roofs' - where Yury on purchasing his first lap steel recorded his playing near the river on what was a golden hour that soon became dark - it is all captured in the recording of this daydream of a track. The album's darker more drifting songs, 'Ruby River' and 'Tales From Copperopolis' feature the vibrational voice of Georgia Carbone, erstwhile vocalist of Dire Wolves. Lucas and Carbone's eerie vocal duet on the lengthy 'Ruby River' is stunningly haunting and unexpected. This mysteriously anomalous album utilizes such elements as tape collage, improv jazz type drumming, clarinet, Brogan's melodica, intertwining basses, piano, treated violin, and Lucas's 'Scenes From The South Island'-like plaintive skeletal guitar playing that is sure to tickle the ear into quiet hysterics, if not downright rearranging the ear to accommodate a new form of hearing! The listener should expect the usually oddly crafted and layered sound combinations as
evidenced on previous OME releases. These sonic elements are a vehicle for Lucas's softly placid tenor, but with added dimensions his purely solo work only alludes to. This album
isn't "psychedelic" in the sense of spacey, wah-wah riffs: it's far more subtle, detailed, and delicate in terms of its transcendent properties, but the invitation is there to climb into the chrysalis and be transformed. Recorded in Sao Paulo in 1974, 'Nascimento' was the first and only album of the band Perfume Azul Do Sol, mixing the talents of Pedro Baldanza (bass), Jean (guitar), Gil (drums), the voice and piano of Ana Maria Guedes and the Nordestine influences of Benvindo (voice and guitar). Husband and wife Ana and Benvindo were the heart and soul of the album, a brilliant songwriting team. Benvindo seems to have come from Pernambuco and was well versed in the Baiao Northeastern rhythmic structures that gave birth to forró and coco rhythms. On the album Ana's melodies mix with Benvindo's natural swing soaked in baiao, forró and psychedelia. The great Daniel Salinas helps out with the horn arrangements.

QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE - SHADY GROVE
The third long-player from San Francisco psychedelic icons Quicksilver Messenger Service (QMS) is a direct contrast from their previous discs. 'Shady Grove' (1969) is comprised mostly of shorter and self-contained pieces as opposed to the long and extended jams that were so prevalent on their self-titled debut (1967) and 'Happy Trails' (1969). Ironically, the one stretched-out instrumental is courtesy of their latest acquisition, Brit recording session guru Nicky Hopkins (keyboards). Another possible reason for the shift in style as well as personnel is the conspicuous absence of Gary Duncan (guitar), who is rumored to have been a "guest" of Bay Area law enforcement at the time. The band incorporate a number of different styles on the album. Kicking off the disc is an up-tempo rocking version of the traditional Appalachian folk song 'Shady Grove.' The QMS reading is highlighted by John Cipollina's trademark fluid fretwork and a familiar "Bo Diddley" backbeat, reminiscent of both 'Who Do You Love' and 'Mona' from the live ensemble LP 'Happy Trails.' Originally released in 1994. Few artists have left behind a legacy as enigmatic and captivating as Shizuka Miura. SLOW DAWN - INTO THE MACHINE HAUS
Slow Dawn is from Ottawa, Canada and have spent the past few years honing their craft with a series of self released titles, including 2020's 'Experimental Farm,' a rather angst-ridden and raw display of sonic power. They are led by guitarist Dan Druff, formerly of Holy Cobras, and are rounded out by Chris DiLauro on drums and Jesse Winchester (Masss) on bass and synthesizer. The band draws influence from the darker edges of the musical spectrum and places a majority of their energy on filling empty voids with as much sound as possible. Slow Dawn is a cacophony of reverberating distortion, swirls of echoing vocals, droning horns, and a steady din of plodding drums. Whether it's Ottawa's grim and cold winters or simply a sign of the times, the band's sound is quite dystopian and is marked by a sense of solemn minimalism. It would be safe to say that with Slow Dawn, the glass is rarely half full. With six songs clocking in at about 22 minutes, 'Into The Machine Haus' moves quickly and efficiently through a range of territories that include post-punk, psych, krautrock, noise, and even a little bit of goth. It's a unique amalgamation of sound that demands attention. The band's influences are easily read but integrated in a way that they escape the dreaded "sounds like" tag. And, to their credit, there are no wasted moments or frivolous meanderings. Their approach is straightforward, primal, and succinct. In the case of this album, less is definitely more. Co-release with Centripetal Force, limited to 250 copies. Only a handful available here, so be fast.

After a long hiatus, Soft Hearted Scientists returned in 2023 with their most ambitious album yet, packed with psych pop singles and longer sound journeys such as 'Waltz Of The Weekend,' 'Anemone Song' and 'Lost Mariners.' And now it's time for the album to make its first appearance on vinyl, courtesy of Fruits de Mer Records. There have been glowing reviews of the CD album, but one comment summed up the progress the album represents for the band in simple terms: "The pop songs have got poppier, and the weird songs have got weirder." Producer Frank Naughton came into his own at the mixing stage and helped to graft newly written sections into some songs which gave them more depth. 'Rode My Bike' was one such song, and the middle section of that then took on a life of its own to become a standalone track called 'Gadzooks!,' probably the most over-the-top song they have ever released, tipping its hat to the Butthole Surfers' cover version of 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' and James Bond themes along the way. 'Who Loves The Moon?' grew from a few chords and a repeated refrain of about 2 minutes into an 8 minute multi- sectioned trip; similarly, 'Lost Mariners' grew from a short mantra into an 11 minute ghost story. The album finished with obsessive attention to detail in 2023 was vastly superior to the album band leader Nathan Hall and his fellow members tentatively started in 2019. And now Fruits de Mer Records are more than a bit pleased to be releasing 'Waltz Of The Weekend' on vinyl - SIX sides of it (we try not to do things by halves). In addition to the 12 tracks from the 75 minute CD edition, side five of the vinyl set includes three radical remixes of the songs 'Rode My Bike,' 'What Grows Inside The Garden' and 'The Sea Anemone Song' by producer Frank Naughton, while the final side contains a sidelong remix/remake of elements of the album by Frank who ripped the songs to bits with glee, free from Nathan Hall's album mix obsessiveness, and remade them as he wished without inhibition - what a trip.

"Fans of the Kosmische sound rejoice as sonic pioneers Dom Keen and Jonathan Parkes return with another instalment of their essential record series. I found my way to Studio Kosmische via Parkes' Korb project. Whilst I am admittedly tardy to the party, I'm nonetheless smitten by the sounds your about to enjoy in the grooves of this here record. The album is split into two musical journeys across its two sides. 'The Rites Of Saturn' starts as a tribal dance before the song enters a black hole and the sounds of the cosmos permeate the speakers. We drift along for a spell enveloped in the calm of the never-ending expanse before emerging back where we started. The drums welcoming us back to the dance. I get lost in this track every time and it sends me running to the turntable to flip the record to continue the journey. Side B finds us 'Beyond The Circle Of The Fixed Stars.' This is what I'd deem a groovy little number. The minimal bass trades licks with the guitar before a synth line kicks in. Check out the drums by the way. Gloriously busy but never intrusive. They absolutely steal the show for me. Another journey of a track, it transforms before your ears into this mellow, pastoral acoustic jam. It really does feel welcoming and almost like a homecoming. If you've been following Studio Kosmische then you'll know the quality these guys produce. If, like me, this is your first foray then my dear listener you're in for a treat. 'UNE EPOPEE DE L'AUTOPRODUCTION EN FRANCE - 1973/1991' -
The French equivalent of the English "Derby Service", the Kiosque d'Orphée, was taken over by Georges Batard in 1967 and it remained in service until 1991. Georges Batard was a sound engineer who used a Neumann tube engraver to engrave acetates from the tapes he received, before printing the precious vinyls, where he was able to produce very small runs of between 50 and 500 copies. What most of these records have in common is the anonymity of the artists. Most of them were amateur productions, both in terms of the level of the musicians and the quality of the recordings, made on a two-track tape desk or, the ultimate luxury, a 4-track tape recorder. This 3LP features a collection of songs from the period 1973-1991.

'The 17th Dream Of Dr. Sardonicus Live' is a double LP celebrating the 2019 get-together of the friends and extended family of Fruits de Mer Records and Sendelica, held as always in the shadow of Cardigan Castle in the Cellar Bar. The 2019 festival saw a pretty amazing line-up of artists, from legends such as The Bevis Frond, Ken Pustelnik's Groundhogs and The Chemistry Set to new artists like Moon Goose, Elfin Bow and Sarah Birch - and of course Fruits de Mer and local favourites, Sendelica; but almost as amazing was the fact that all three nights of recordings went really well, so they had a hell of a job selecting the tracks for this set... They decided to include as many performances as possible within the confines of 20 minutes per side (not that easy when some of the bands think 20 minutes is the length of a typical intro!); amongst the tracks you'll find Elfin Bow playing Stevie Marriott and the Chemistry Set playing Hendrix, but have a listen for yourself and enjoy all three days crammed into 80 minutes.

'Renoir Of The Toys' is a deep dive into the world of Youri Kun, the nom de plume of Japanese guitarist, singer and
songwriter Hiroshi Nar. It follows a similar compilation,
'Unheld Ball,' released in 2022 on Japanese label Inundow; like that album, 'Renoir Of The Toys' draws from the rich catalogue
of outsider psych-garage and rock recorded by Youri Kun over the past two decades. Deeply wired into the history of Japanese underground music, Nar was a founding member of legendary
'70s outfit Datetenryu, and a member of both Brain Police (Zuno Keisatsu) and Les Ralllizes Dénudés (Hadaka No Rallizes), appearing on the latter's '77 Live.' After going to ground during the 1980s, Nar started making music with Niplets in the mid-'90s, and releasing music at a prolific pace in 2000 - an excellent run of (some times archival) CDrs on the Hello Goodbye Studio label, both solo, and with his groups Molls, Niplets and Port Cuss; an album on P.S.F. by Jokers, where he was joined by fellow Rallizes member Yokai Takahashi, and drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka (Brain Police, Vajra, Cinorama, etc.); and sixteen albums (and counting) as Youri Kun, for labels Gyunne Cassette, Inundow, and Hören. He's also fallen in with the Acid Mothers Temple crowd, guesting on a few of their albums, and recording a live set with Kawabata Makoto's Nishinihon trio. All Nar's music shares a deceptive primitivism; it moves with the simplicity of the best 1960s garage punk, but its edges are blurred and stretched, allowing for all kinds of weird, elliptical, and psychedelic moves to happen in its margins. His guitar playing on songs like 'Kakunin' (from 2011's 'Yamaimo Boogie') shimmies and slurs magnificently; 'Kurokami,' from 2012's 'Su,' has clanking six strings scrawling over loose, spaced-out synth; there are clunky psychobilly moves ('Oshiro No Ninjya'), spirited rave-ups for rattling organ and sputtering guitar ('Totsugeki'), and some lovely, drowsy, melancholy moments ('Sora'). The constant throughout is Nar's blues-blurred, drawling voice, as unique a tool as the non-idiomatic speak-sing styles of solo Syd Barrett, Jad Fair, or Dave E. McManus. There are also three Les Rallizes Dénudés covers here, where Nar locates the pop genius at the heart of songs like 'Shiroi Yoru' and amplifies this with his simple garage-reverential take on things. 'Renoir Of The Toys'
is yet more evidence that Hiroshi Nar was, and is, one of Japan's musical visionaries, a lonesome voice dedicated to a singular, streamlined vision, one that's in eternal pursuit of the joy and kicks at the heart of rock'n'roll, and a
reminder of what a great, unpretentious rock'n'roller truly should be.

Singer-songwriter Peter Daltrey returns with the album 'Running Through Chelsea' together with The Know Escape. His brilliant '60s group Kaleidoscope were one of the great psychedelic groups to emerge from the U.K. during those heady days. With infectious pop tunes laced with folk-rock jingle-jangle goodness and anapaestic lyrics that set them apart from many of their contemporaries, Kaleidoscope were vital as was too their more progressive folk early '70s incarnation as Fairfield Parlour. The band has often been spoken about with the same reverence reserved for Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett era, despite their lack of mainstream success. This is a 50-50 collaboration with Mark Mortimer, formerly of DC Fontana and The Sorrows, who has always been a fan of Peter's work. 'Chelsea' is more sonic expressionism from the two musicians; the songs are "psychedelic" in a sense without ever falling into the trap of being shoddy xeroxes of past glories. Irish psychedelic folkies Dr. Strangely Strange were active from 1968-1971. Their two Joe Boyd-produced albums from that era, 'Kip Of The Serenes' (Island) and 'Heavy Petting' (Vertigo), are both highly sought after by collectors. In their heyday, the band recorded only two BBC radio sessions, a 'Top Gear' slot and an 'In Concert,' both with John Peel. Frustratingly, the BBC's tapes were wiped, but after extensive research with European collectors, TLAK has been able to locate off-air recordings of both sessions, which have been painstakingly restored. Added to these are brief radio sessions for Dutch and Danish radio sourced from the original recordings, as well as a Dublin rehearsal take of 'Sign On My Mind' featuring Gary Moore, a friend of the band and guest on 'Heavy Petting.' The accompanying 24-page illustrated booklet featuring previously unpublished photos has been compiled by Strangelies biographer Adrian Whittaker.

Reissue of the classic third album from 1976 by pastoral British folk rockers Unicorn produced by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. It was their first for EMI's Harvest label in the UK and second for Capitol in the US. Almost completely penned by guitarist/keyboardist/singer Ken Baker, the album combines impassioned 1970s West Coast vibes with Beatlesque melodies and tight performances. Indeed, the album, while remaining sonically consistent, enjoys shifting effortlessly between gritty country rockers like the Lindsey Buckingham sounding 'He's Got Pride' and 'In The Mood,' to the funky 'Bullseye Bill'' and the gentle title track which is not unlike Big Star at their finest. While Unicorn were sadly unsuccessful in turning the proto-powerpop 'Disco Dancer' into a major hit, the album track 'No Way Out Of Here' went on to be the key track on David Gilmour's debut album. It's a must-have album for any serious music fan.

Fruits de Mer Records turns 15 years old this spring and it feels like a good time/excuse to launch a series of retrospectives, featuring artists who have supported the label consistently over the years, for some inexplicable reason.
And as they launched Fruits de Mer as a vinyl label back in 2008, just at the point when vinyl was declared dead and buried, what better time to launch a series of CDs as the compact disc is widely reported to be in terminal decline? That said, they are doing their best give the CDs a bit of vinyl feel, thanks to Sam Giles Design. This first CD focusses on Swedish duo Us and Them, whose contributions to the label began with a Pink Floyd cover in 2009, moved on through songs from 'The Wicker Man' and tributes to Sandy Denny, fitting in some self-penned songs along the way; Britt Rönnholm has a voice capable of doing justice to Sandy Denny's songs, something few could justifiably claim, and she is always supported instrumentally by her partner Anders Håkansson.
'An Introduction to Us and Them' comprises twelve tracks taken from their FdM outings together with four 'bonus' tracks, chosen by Britt and Anders from Us and Them from recordings that have appeared on other labels (yes, other labels do
exist).

When England went into "lockdown" - ex-Pretty Thing Wally Waller went straight into producing solo acoustic videos, performing some of the classic songs by The Pretty Things he helped write with Phil May, alongside other favourites. It quickly became apparent that the best room in his apartment
to record was the kitchen and 'Kitchen Rock' was born! Wally's further labours in the music room augmented the solo takes to full 'one-man' band productions on most of the songs from the series. While a far cry from his days recording and working as a producer at Abbey Road - there's something very honest and special about these home sessions that make up this album.
Originally released by the artist on his Bandcamp page, this marks the first physical release of this unique collection. The CD version boasts several extra songs, including previously unreleased archive recordings.

Formed in 1961 when Dennis Wilson, the only Beach Boy to regularly visit the beach, asked his brother Brian to write a song about the sport of surfing. The Beach Boys reached number 75 in national charts with their first single (the resultant song 'Surfin'') and were immediately signed to a major label. Though many debut albums in the early '60s were mainly built around a few smash-hits, the Beach Boys' 1962 full length debut on Capitol (featuring such hits as 'Surfin' Safari,' '409' and their version of the Eddie Cochran classic 'Summertime Blues') remains one of the greatest first steps in American pop culture, and a mandatory chapter in the history of rock and roll.

Limited to 385 copies in silkscreened white or chipboard jacket with obi (vanilla or grapesicle), inserts and a postcard. Mura were a previously little-known group from Japan, formed by friends Kota Inukai (vocals, guitar), Masaki Endo (bass) and Sho Shibata (drums) in the late noughties. Performing mostly in small events in Sapporo, they were outsiders, and felt a kinship with few other groups, though Inukai mentions rock group Green Apple Quick Step, and hardcore band Ababazure as fellow travellers. This isolation surely feeds into the uniqueness of Mura's music - they sound little like much that we know of the taggable Japanese underground of their times, and the music they recorded for this, their debut album, spanning a decade, is gloriously all over the shop, from delirious punk wig-outs to strange pop miniatures. The group formed young - Inukai was only fourteen when they started, and Mura was his first ever band. When pressed on what they were listening to while making their music, Inukai recalls that he "used to listen to the works of Haruomi Hosono a lot", and you can hear traces of this, perhaps, in the breadth of the
sound Mura explores, from the lovely, country-esque shuffle of 'In The Talk,' through the garage-y plunk of 'Rest' and the reflective, melancholy 'Younger Brother.' They were also big fans of video game music - "even orchestral covers of video games", Inukai smiles - and that's in there, too, in the split-second responsiveness of the playing, the way they flick through ideas and genres almost impatiently, taking minutes to cover terrain that other groups might spend albums and years exploring. But the songs were also grounded in Japan's history, with many of the songs inspired by "old Hokkaido," Inukai recalls, "from the Meiji, Taisho, Showa periods." With Inukai coming up with the melodies, and Shibata fleshing out arrangements, all three members then contributed lyrics. You can hear that collective effort in the way the music moves, every player listening carefully to each other, the songs moving gracefully, but not without verve and vim. It's a delightful album, full of pop songs that take unexpected
turns, with glinting melodies sung out, here sweetly, there with gruff candour, guitars tangling together like an unholy union of Tom Verlaine and Jad Fair, every song charged with a new, unpredictable spirit.

Although they released six albums in their lifetime, the Sound, who formed in early 1979 and broke up in late 1987, were under valued in their own country, always attracting only a small audience. 200 miles away from their native South London and across the North Sea in the Netherlands, the Sound, however, had a fanatical following, regularly filling out 2000 capacity venues and at one point in the early '80s outselling both U2 and Echo and the Bunnymen there. This performance was recorded at the Amsterdam Paradiso on the 8th March 1981 on the last night of the band's four-date first Dutch tour.

Especially if you were one of the chancers attempting to call her "Plain." Or, if you were attempting to cause aggro for her beloved Dawn. And these were The Knuckle Girls. Well, two of them, anyway. In 1979, Betty Davis entered the studio to record her fifth and final album, while she was reeling from a series of setbacks. Three years earlier, after recording her fourth album 'Is It Love Or Desire', Davis was dropped from her label and the LP was subsequently shelved. In 1978, her beloved band Funk House went their separate ways. Looking for a fresh start, Davis relocated to Hollywood to focus on songwriting. British manager Simon Lait (Toni Basil), offered to fund her next project. With renewed vigor, Davis reunited with former Funk House guitarist Carlos Morales and brought together industry veterans like fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon, session bassist Chuck Rainey and Herbie Hancock on keyboards. Anita and Bonnie Pointer from The Pointer Sisters and Patryce "Choc'let" Banks joined Davis on vocals, as well as Martha Reeves. The resulting album, 'Crashin' From Passion', was her most musically diverse, blending elements of reggae and calypso, jazz, dark synth-pop and even disco. Equally exploratory are Davis' vocals, as she trades in her signature sass and snarls for more nuanced stylings. Black Friday 2023 release. Galt MacDermot (1928-2018) was an award-winning Canadian-American composer, pianist, writer of classical music and theatrical pieces. MacDermot also composed music for several film soundtracks, like the 1970 blaxploitation film 'Cotton Comes To Harlem', and released several jazz and funk albums on his own label Kilmarnock Records. He is best known for his work on the 1967 musical 'Hair' and 'Two Gentlemen Of Verona' from 1971. Working with jazz and soul musicians such as Bernard Purdie and Idris Muhammad, MacDermot created pieces that used African rhythms and in recent decades, his work has become popular with hip-hop musicians including Busta Rhymes, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Gang Starr, Action Bronson, Public Enemy, MF Doom, Madlib, J Dilla, Obie Trice, Naughty By Nature, Run DMC and Digable Planets. The album 'Ghetto Suite', written in 1970 and released in 1972, is considered one of the most ground-breaking records ever issued on Galt MacDermot's Killmarnock label and consists out of a selection of songs and poems by Harlem/Bronx school children, set to Galt's music, and sung by vocalist Angela Ortega. Here comes the very first vinyl reissue of this exceptional conceptual album, comes on 180 gram vinyl, strictly limited to 1000 copies, with obi strip and features the original artwork and extensive sleeve notes.

Antonio L. Newton a.k.a. Tony Newton is a multi-instrumentalist from Detroit, who began his professional career playing bass guitar with blues legends like John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker. Later he became the touring bassist with Smokey Robinson and he has recorded with Motown artists like The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. Newton also recorded several solo albums during his impressive career, of which 'Novaphonia' from 1987 now has been reissued. On the album, Newton is a real multi-instrumentalist, playing synthesizers, bass and programming the drum machine. Tony Newton (born 1948) is a multi-instrumentalist from Detroit, MI who began his professional career at the age of 13, playing bass guitar with blues legends like John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker. Discovered by Motown executive Hank Cosby while playing the Detroit blues circuit at the age of 18, he became the touring bassist with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles on the famed 1965 European 'Motown Review' tour. Within two years, Newton became the Miracles' musical director. Tony Newton also toured and recorded with other Motown artists such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and countless others. Earning the nickname "the Baby Funk Brother" he left his trademark of solid, hard driving and deftly clever grooves on such timeless hits as 'Where Did Our Love Go,' 'Baby Love,' 'Stop In The Name Of Love,' 'Nowhere To Run,' 'ABC,' 'Never Can Say Goodbye,' 'Don't Leave Me This Way,' and many others. Next to his impressive body of work for Motown, Newton can be heard on several hit singles from labels like Invictus-Hotwax and Stax. Later, Newton gained recognition as a member of both the acclaimed jazz-rock fusion group The New Tony Williams Lifetime (headed by Miles Davis' drummer Tony Williams) and the the British hard rock group G-Force (with veteran guitarist Gary Moore). His first solo album 'Mysticism & Romance' (1978) has both elements of his impressive musical past and his vision for the future. The P-Funk-esque bass grooves and fusion jazz-rock vibes, combined with spacious synths, unusual instruments and an all-round cosmic approach make this a unique and VERY intriguing album. What's equally impressive on this album are the guest musicians featured on it. On piano/synth we have Sylvester Rivers (Aretha Franklin) and Alan Pasqua (Quincy Jones), on the guitars we have Charles Ferring (Barry White) and Ray Parker Jr. (Ghostbusters!!!), and last but not least we have Danny Spanos (Sly and the Family Stone) on drums. Sylk was a short-lived soul and funk band from the Aiken, South Carolina - Augusta, Georgia border area (better known as the CSRA), who released just one album in 1983. Their self-titled album would become a much sought-after private pressed holy grail within the record collecting community. Sylk was a true example of a bright light burning out way too quickly. Although it was recorded in 1983, it has a strong '70s vibe. By the time singer-songwriter Albert Washington went to record the tracks that would be released on his career-defining LP, 'Sad And Lonely', in 1973, he was already a veteran on the recording scene. He had singles recorded on a dozen labels, in styles ranging from gospel to blues and soul. Recorded with the Memphis Horns, the tracks on 'Sad And Lonely' are prime southern gospel-infected soul, funk and raw Albert King style blues, bearing the heavy influence of both James Brown's funk and Otis Redding's Memphis soul. Albert's music is full of lament, urban hustle and lost love, the precise guitar strokes alongside Washington's soaring vocals create the mood for the blues to invade the funk parts. The female backup singers' harmonies are the cherry on top and the album is a funky emotional onslaught with relentless dance grooves from start to end. The outpour of talent featured here on `Sad and Lonely' was carefully produced by Bernie Mendelson (Donald Austin, Melvin Sparks, Ceasar Frazier), engineered by Ronnie Capone (Stax) and then mastered by the legendary Howard Craft. From the eerie 'Blues Para Un Cosmonauta' -which could easily fit in the 'Twin Peaks' soundtrack-, to the majestic 'Líneas Torcidas' or the mid-tempo groove of 'Mi Amigo Tarzán,' new landscapes in jazz are explored without hiding, at moments, the musicians' bebop pedigree. Venturing into uncharted dimensions, the album breaks with traditionalism and combines jazz and new electronic instruments into a contemporary concept that is both cosmic and sensual, a sound where timbre and space play a crucial role. Here, no track sounds like the other. The charismatic, multifaceted saxophone player Horacio "Chivo" Borraro is joined here most notably by Fernando Gelbard -who pioneered electronic keyboards and analog synths in Argentina, playing here Fender Rhodes and Minimoog- and Brazilian musician Stenio Mendes, who plays the 12-string craviola and contributes two tracks. In 1972, trumpeter Baikida Carroll and some of his colleagues from the Black Artists Group(more precisely saxophonist/flutist Oliver Lake, trombonist Joseph Bowie, drummer Charles "Bobo" Shawand trumpeter Floyd LeFlore) took the advice of their friends in The Art Ensemble Of Chicago and left their native Missouri to come and discover the bright lights of Paris for themselves. The following year they would even get the chance to record their only album which would rapidly attain mythical status and a collector's item: 'In Paris, Aries 1973.' Therefore, it was not surprising that they crossed paths with Jef Gilson in the capital. He was always on the lookout for new artists for his recently formed Palm label and had been active on many fronts in jazz since the end of the '50s. The French bandleader/pianist/composer/sound engineer had already recorded, in the preceding months other American musicians who would go on to have great careers: Byard Lancaster, Keno Speller, Clint Jackson III, Khan Jamal... Gilson therefore offered Baikida Carroll the chance to record his first album under his own name, which would be the 13th release on the label. Carroll logically asked Oliver Lake to join him. He also recruited Manuel Villaroel, a young Franco-Chilean pianist from the group Matchi-Oul, who had already released an album on Futura in 1971 and would release another on Palm in 1976. The group was completed with the addition of Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, who had just released a well-received album on the Saravah label. They were ready to enter the studio for the 3rd, 4th and 5th June 1974. The first side of the album is divided into two long tracks which send free jazz back to its long-lost African roots. The opener 'Orange Fish Tears' indeed rolls out a jungle of percussion of all sorts and sizes -the whole group is involved- which weave and mix together reaching a point where all bearings are lost, lending a sense of wonder to the majestic entry of the brass and woodwinds, flying suddenly out from the undergrowth. 'Forest Scorpion' (sic) is a real voodoo ceremony where a venomous percussive groove backs the fiery solos from keyboards and saxophone in a furious trance. A warning; after these two tracks listeners are physically and emotionally wiped out! The other side is more introspective. Deliberately using dissonance and repetition, 'Rue Roger' -the only composition by Oliver Lake- in a long dialogue between trumpet and saxophone, could almost remind us of Terry Riley in his favourite ballpark. 'Porte D'Orléans,' the fourth and final track on the album, has the group back to their old tricks in a long hallucinatory jam which owes as much to the contemporary music of György Ligeti as to the most angst-ridden Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack music (remember the heavy chords which beat through 'Planet Of The Apes'). With these two sides, and in under 45m, Baikida Carroll and his musicians show just what they can do, from cerebral to charnel without ever simplifying things. This is an essential album if you are a fan of free-wheeling avant-garde music from The Art Ensemble Of Chicago to Sonic Youth and including Shabaka Hutchings and Rob Mazurek. For those with good taste, in other words.

Lucky Thompson, reaching Gibbs' attention in a duo with vibraphonist Terry Pollard; in the quartet, she became the perfect foil for Gibbs, her understated piano making room for his intense improvisation, stepping up with her own expression when needed. 'El Nutto', their third LP, captures Alice at her best in this setting, as heard on the reveries of 'El Flippo' and the title track, this solid set of Gibbs originals showing her virtuosity, composure and curiousness, which would soon reach more cosmic highs, once she became Alice Coltrane.

Essential jazz from Argentina, originally released in 1971. 'Bronca Buenos Aires' is one of the highlights in the career of Jorge López Ruiz, alongside 'El Grito' and the much-acclaimed Viejas Raíces project. The album is jazz poem by López Ruiz to the city he loved, not just for its virtues but also its faults, and the recording was an ambitious project that gathered many of the prominent jazz musicians of Buenos Aires.
However, due to the repressive political context of the time, 'Bronca Buenos Aires' was not performed live upon its release. The text that accompanies the music, written and narrated by José Tcherkaski, was too daring despite not being directly outspoken against the dictatorship that ruled in Argentina, and broadcasters kept a distance under fear of retaliation by the military establishment. Inexplicably, several later re-releases of 'Bronca Buenos Aires' omitted the spoken word overdubs, reducing the work to an instrumental album and stripping it of half of its beauty and significance. Altercat proudly brings you a new reissue of this essential recording IN FULL, with its original spoken words in Spanish, respecting the original artwork and with an accompanying booklet with an English translation of the texts, including a foreword by José Tcherkaski. Sound sourced from the master tapes, and caringly mastered by Pablo López Ruiz.

In his colourful 'Un Hombre De Buenos Aires,' recorded in 1978, JLR puts the political outcry of his early '70s works aside and focuses on his love for the city of Buenos Aires. As always, Jorge López Ruiz enroled for the recording of 'Un Hombre De Buenos Aires' some of the best musicians in the country. The line-up includes Dino Saluzzi on bandoneon, Domingo Cura on percussion and his lifelong friend Pocho Lapouble on drums. Jorge López Ruiz gets far less credit than he deserves. His crucial role in shaping Argentina's jazz history should place him right next to Gato Barbieri and Lalo Schifrin, giants who found success abroad. It's an honour do dig deeper into his vast discography after having already reissued his masterpiece 'Viejas Raíces' and his historical milestone album 'Bronca Buenos Aires.'

The literal meaning of these interior monologues may be elusive but the twilit mood of his delivery is captivating. The final piece, 'I Went To The City,' is more straightforward; an elegy for city dwellers and "men out of touch with the earth..." 'State Of The Nation' seems to conjure up the 1950s as a sublime, subterranean landscape of parping saxophones and fever-dream words. This early jazz poetry is historically crucial and still a fantastic listen now!"

"Hey, there's this new guy around that plays like Herbie Hancock!!" When Chilean pianist Matías Pizarro arrived in Argentina fleeing Pinochet's dictatorship, word spread like wildfire in the local jazz scene. In the two short years that Pizarro spent in Buenos Aires, he became one third of the Viejas Raíces project alongside local jazz heroes Jorge López Ruiz and Pocho Lapouble, recorded with famed Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava and released his own solo album, 'Pelo De Rata' ("Rat's Hair"). Pizarro was no beginner though. Whilst in Chile he had already participated in several music projects and worked as a producer and arranger for the IRT label, and was connected to influential bands such as Los Jaivas and Blops. He had also studied in the Berklee School of Music where he not only met and lived with the cream of an emerging new wave of musicians, but he also had the chance to attend live performances of giants such as Miles Davis or Thelonious Monk.
In the recording of 'Pelo De Rata' Pizarro is joined by fellow Chilean Alejandro Rivera (Sacros, Grupo Sol) on quena and charango, Swedish bassist Bo Gathu on bass, Uruguayan saxophonist Finito Bingert and an impressive percussion team featuring Pocho Lapouble, "El Zurdo" Roizner and the mighty Domingo Cura. The album draws from the US jazz fusion currents of the time (think Chick Corea and Miles Davis), adding an undeniable Latin American character, all projected through Pizarro's own musical prism which displays his acute sense of harmony and a musical intimacy that reminds of those sincere, dreamy moments in Viejas Raíces. The 8-page booklet that accompanies the vinyl edition will give you a deeper insight into the story of Matías Pizarro, with previously unseen pictures and liner notes by Argentinean journalist Humphrey Hinzillo (La Nación , Rolling Stone Argentina).

The pianist and bandleader Frank Strazzeri enjoyed a distinguished jazz career. After backing Billie Holiday and Woody Herman, Strazzeri became a mainstay of the west coast jazz scene. His excellent album 'After The Rain,' released by Catalyst in 1976, straddled different styles and moods, Strazzeri's piano and synth melodies abetted by top accompaniment from Herman's horn alumni Sam Most and Bobby Shew, playing alongside Cal Tjader's bassist Harvey Newmark and percussionist Don Alias of Blood Sweat and Tears, with Strazzeri's son Steve behind the drumkit. Another fine fusion LP from Strazzeri that's ripe for rediscovery.

'Jazz In Silhouette' is the quintessential record of Sun Ra's late 1950s Chicago period. Recorded and issued in 1959, it marks a coda for the bandleader's bebop/hard-bop stage, as his interstellar traveler persona began to transform the band (and the music). It also charts the future, showcasing the brilliant tenor sax stylings of John Gilmore, and introduces the iconic playing of Arkestra mainstays Marshall Allen, Pat Patrick, and Ronnie Boykins. Many of the early works on these recordings would remain staples in Arkestra set lists for the rest of Sun Ra's life. This expanded edition includes the complete, contemporaneous 'Sound Sun Pleasure,' rare stereo mixes, and bonus tracks. This edition's exterior features the original space nymph cover art, which only appeared in cropped and washed-out reproductions on an early '60s version. Cosmic jazz from the Canary Islands. After a few years in London, where he worked with Archie Shepp and recorded a sought-after album for the famed library music label De Wolfe, Argentinean pianist Luis Vecchio settled in the island of Gran Canaria following advice from a superior entity from outer space. Vecchio subsequently opened the first jazz school in the Canary Islands, effectively planting the seeds of jazz in the archipelago. In 'Contactos,' recorded in 1978 in the Mayra studio owned by Ramiro González, Vecchio gives a free jazz account (with a dash of funky jazz rock) of his contacts with Adionesis, who delivers his ominous message upon the human race on side B of the album. Fellow Argentinean Fernando Bermúdez on percussion and Japanese bass player Yoichi Yahiro complete the line-up of 'Contactos.'
